Well.. I found something Zeus likes as a treat. .

I was eating some tortilla chips while sitting on the floor and hanging out with him.  A large crumb of tortilla chip fell in front of him,  and before I could pick it up he reached out and ate it!

Just to see if it was a fluke, I then offered him another little bite about the size of half of my pinky nail.  He ate it with much gusto. .

I guess he doesn’t like sweet.. he prefers salty snacks!

My question now is.. are tortilla chips okay as an occasional treat?  I’d never give him a whole chip, I’d probably stick with the approximately pea-sized piece I gave him just now.  The issue I can think of is their fat content, but I could shop around and try and find some “low fat” ones.  Or if not, anyone else got some ideas for a healthy, crunchy, salty bun treat? .

(Before anyone gets alarmed, I did check the ingredients before offering him the piece.  All they’re made of is corn, oil, and salt. )

I love tortilla chips too! But they really aren’t a good treat for Zeus. Corn is hard to digest for rabbits and salt and oils just aren’t good for them either – heck they aren’t good for us either!

Even as an occasional treat?  I’m trying to find something he likes, and have had zero luck until now!  If not even as an occasional thing, any ideas of healthy, salty snacks for buns?

I canot recommend this as a treat.

Here’s a link to the BinkyBunny store:

Some he might like are the Barley Treats, the Timoothy Treats and the Veggie Treats.

I’d rather not buy an entire bag of something only to discover he doesn’t like them.  There’s a bag of banana chips and a box of raisins sitting and collecting dust on my counter.

Well you can eat the raisins and banana chips. I’m not sure how else you are going to discover what he likes then.

I’d rather try stuff that I don’t have to pay to ship and is cheap in general so I don’t put a lot of money into a snack I discover he doesn’t like.  I don’t like banana chips or raisins, so collect dust they will! .

I do know of on thing that might work, I am positive they are crunchy, but I havent eaten any (Duh!) so I don’t know if it’s salty. They are availible at Petsmart, T-rex Tasty Pretzel Treats. Now, they arent the healthiest, so only give 1 pretzet snack a day, but according to the reviews, the are PERFECT for bunnies who turn away from sweets.

I definitely don’t suggest those T-Rex Tasty Pretzel Treats. Here is the ingredients: Flour, Soy Portein Isolate, Shortening, Soybean (Hydrogenated), Fiber, Leavening Agents, Corn Syrup, Natural and Synthetic Coloring, Natureal and Synthetic Flavoring.

Just because a pet store sells something doesn’t mean it’s good for your pets.

Still they would probably be better for (Him or her? I am just gonna say him if thats ok) him then Tortilla chips

I’ve bought and thrown out a ton of treats and dried fruits and stuff. It’s trial and error to figure out what bunnies like, so you will spend money on things he doesn’t like… BUT once you figure out what he does like, you can stick with that! Even among my pair, one will go nuts for something, the other just sniffs it and hops away…

Do you have a health food store near you, or an upscale grocery store? They usually have all kinds of natural, dried fruits with little or no added sugar. Are you giving him these treats every single day for a week or two? Does he try them and reject them, or he doesn’t even nibble? If my buns are ignoring something, I stick a couple in their food dish every single day. Usually within a few days they get curious and try it. Don’t be discouraged if you’re offering it and he doesn’t take it from your hand right away.

You can make your own bunny cookies as was suggested… or if you’re ordering something from the BB store anyways, it’s not going to increase your shipping much, if any, to add in a package of treats.

Come to think of it… it would be nice if there were some way for Binkybunny to have a sample pack of multiple treats/cookies… where you got 2 or 3 of each type.

Okay, so maybe you really did want to bake something afterall. You have the oven, the plate, the kitchen, and the super scrubber in case of spills. Gee, are you ready or what? This cookie is great, as papaya can help prevent hairball, as well as pineapple cookie. Instead of baking, you can always freeze it and serve.

                                        Papaya & Pineapple Cookie
I’ve decided to make my own variation(s) of Robin’s recipe which she got from Brenda’s, (the treat below) so that might answer your question about the similarity of the recipe.

                                        1/4 c. Papaya, mashed evenly
                                        1 spoonful Pineapple, mashed evenly
                                        1/4 c. Rabbit pellets
                                        3 tsp. Old Fashion Oats

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Mix pineapple and papaya together until it looks pureed and blended altogether. Grind pellets finely and mix with oats. Add mixture to the puree and mix until well blended. Using a tsp. measuring spoon, spoon out onto a cookie sheet covered in parchment paper. It prevents sticking and doesn’t add any grease at the same time. Flatten your cookies until about 1/4″ thick and bake for about 30 minutes or until brown on the bottom. For a crunchier treat, turn off oven when and leave it in until it cools or take it out and let cool. Serve to your rabbits and store leftovers but not for more than 5 days in a refrigerator.

My buns like Oxbow cookies, which don’t contain a lot of junk- the only sweetener is molasses and I don’t think they’re terribly sweet. (I mean, that’s junk too But I feel a little better about sugars I can identify than “corn syrup solids” and such). They’re also very easy to break in half… buns are only allowed 1/2 cookie per day in my house, I’m mean like that For the record, the “Barley Biscuits” and “Veggie Treats” are heart-shaped cookies, my rabbits like both… the “Timothy Treats” are much smaller, my guys didn’t like them as much (I thought they smelled kind of funny, but I don’t eat grass and hay for a living either so I don’t think my opinion counts!)

Another thing to try, if you can get it, might be plain whole oats (sometimes called “race horse oats” since they’re a high-energy horse feed), given very sparingly of course since they are fattening- I give maybe a penny-sized pile rarely more than once a week. Riesling came with a small baggie of these from her foster mom and they were the ONLY treats she would eat for the longest time! She’s another bun who’s not wild about sweet stuff. (Though she has since discovered carrots, craisins and Oxbow cookies are to her liking!)
