Rabbit has something “floating” on his eye since last night. It isn’t bothering him (no swelling or discharge) and I assumed it would blink out, but it is still there today. It does move when he blinks, and it looks semi-transparent white, sort of like a thin bit of skin or something, perhaps a bit of fur? I don’t know.

Not sure if I should try to get a problem appointment with the vet since it’s not bothering him. He will let me play around his eyes and touch his eyelids while I’m petting him, so I could probably manage to flush or wipe it out. I’m assuming like our eyes, it’s not really bothersome to be touched on the whites or the iris.

But, has anybody seen this? Is this symptomatic of tear duct problems? He does have a vet appointment in about a week to get a general checkup. Theoretically I could take him in sooner to have the vet deal with it, but our selected vet is about 1.5 hours away from where I am right now (last week of classes so rabbit is with me in my sublet, not my permanent home right now). I could get a vet down this way somewhere I’m sure for an emergency appointment,  but it seems wasteful when he needs to see who will be his regular vet anyways to set the baseline. Gah.

Of course! After posting this now I don’t see it. :/ Maybe my moving his eyelids about trying to get a look at what it was helped position it so he blinked it out? What the heck?

You could get some saline solution from your grocery store, normal contact lens solution should work. And then drop some in his eye to wash it out and see if that works. The saline solution is very safe, and won’t cause any problems if it is something other than just a floaty.

Good to know about the saline, that’s what I was thinking, and I happen to have some since I am a contact lens wearer (sometimes). I will keep an eye on the eye tonight and if I do happen to respot the spot I’ll give a saline rinse a go. But, unless it’s hiding under an eyelid, it appears to be gone. Not sure why he had such problems blinking it out, who knows. I’ll mention the vet either way during checkup so his tear ducts can get checked.

Well if you use the Saline Solution make sure it’s a new unused bottle so it’s not contaminated. Some of my rabbits have had this gunk stuff in their eyes and eventually it “rinses” out on it’s own. Good to know you have an appt with a vet for him soon too.

It is also recommended not to use the solution again for yourself or someone else if you rinse the eye. You could transmit bacteria to your own eye by accident.

Thanks for the heads up – I usually buy the shrink wrapped multipacks my drug store has, so I do have unused ones here. The tips never touch anything during use, so I would have thought safe to reuse, but they are cheap enough and better safe than sorry!

My bunny recently is having similar problem but it starting to clear up and I have been using just water.  I soak a paper towel in water and at the corner of her eye I squease it and open her eye just a bit and have the water wash it out.  I have to do that a couple of times, and whatever was in her eye irritated her tear duct so she was getting crusties.  I would just use a paper towel soaked in water as a compress to moisten the crusties and then comb it out.  Her crusties came back about every other day but it was noticably better when I washed hereye out twice a day and so far it’s been pretty clear, and I did extra litter box changing and sanitized the cage just incase.

My buns get occasional eye cruddies too sometimes that seem to work themselves out, but you may actually be seeing the third eyelid popping out. Rabbits and many other mammals have an extra, thin, pale white/semi-translucent membrane to help protect the eye, and sometimes it can either relax out of its spot or be temporarily paralyzed, covering a decent part of the eye. If it is the membrane sticking out in your bun (the fact that you described it as “skin” is what got me thinking this), the fact that it disappeared on you and went back to normal would lead me to believe that the bun’s just tired But it’s always worth mentioning to the vet in case it turns out to be something else- he may well have had something stuck there too. I would also make note, if it comes out again, if it’s in one eye or both, and mention that to the vet too. I wouldn’t go nuts messing with it beforehand though if the bun doesn’t appear to be bothered- bugging their eyes too much can create more problems.

Pictures of a normal and and abnormal third eyelid are here: http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Eye_diseases/Differential/Nictitating.htm (there are lots of scary things listed on that page but in those cases, you would have a rabbit in serious distress and the eyelid would probably be the last thing you noticed! Your description sounds very much like the normal picture on the left.)

As long as it’s not itchy, painful, inflamed etc, and his face is symmetrical (no droopy eyes or way more membrane in one eye than the other), I wouldn’t worry much. A non-irritated small change in an eye in an otherwise happy healthy bunny shouldn’t require a rush to the ER But it should be checked out soonish just in case. Good luck!

(Also as a random FYI, problems with the third eyelid are usually due to damage to the nerve, not tear ducts)

Thanks for the link, interesting stuff, but definitely not what it is. I saw the same thing in his other eye today, though he did blink it out. It’s a floating dot of stuff, both times initially seen in the middle of the eye like, on the iris. My guess is it’s some sort of eye discharge action, since I’ve now seen the same thing in both eyes and he does have little bits of crust or gunk most days in the fur at the corner of his eye that I just wipe off as I’m petting him (he seems to enjoy this too). So, I’m guessing he’s got some minor eye issues. Oh well, I’m sure the vet will be able to tell me how to keep this from escalating to something that does actually bother him, infections or inflammations and so on.

Ah yes definitely not something built in if it’s floating to the middle of his eye Hopefully it’s nothing major then! Both my buns (and the last one too) get miscellaneous cruddies like that from time to time and they never seem to do anything, just work their way out after a day. Mine also don’t mind if I wipe them off as I’m petting them. Hopefully it’s no big deal Good luck!

Finally figured out what it was, in case anyone sees this in the future: rabbit fur. It’s fine undercoat balled up and made to look different by the “gunk” that formed around/in the ball. Heavy shed right now, so I guess not surprising I keep seeing this despite my best efforts to defur every day.
