I am a Saxaphone player. But with a bunny on her way the day before lessons start up again, HOW can they live peacfully? I have other rooms in my house, so moving around IS an option, but I’d prefer it if I could do it in my own room. So can a baby bunny, and two guinea pigs, live peacefully with a sax?

Probably. It’s all about what they’re used to. We don’t try to keep the noise to a minimum in my house, because with children, it would just never work. If it seems to really disturb the bunny, you might have to start it in another room close by, until the bun gets used to it a little bit.

There is another member on here, Lintini, who plays French Horn. You could message her to ask about her experience.

I messaged her on your behalf so you should get an answer.

I grew up playing the cello – it might not be as loud as a sax, but it’s a pretty loud instrument. I practiced in my dining room, right next to where my gerbils lived and they loved it. They would always come out and watch me play. If they weren’t bothered by it, I doubt most bunnies would be. Heck, my bunnies lounge a few feet away from the speakers while we’re watching loud movies and they don’t seem to mind. Your new bunny will just need time to get used to it, but then it probably won’t be a problem.

Hello! Thanks Petzy for showing me this.

I actually have a dog who hates my horn so It’s better for me to play it in my room with 4 rabbits. They don’t care at all. My computer is in here too and I play music at a normal medium to loud volume and it doesn’t bother them either. I think because I vacuum in here every other day they are used to really loud sounds so my horn is nothing to them. I’m obviously not playing music at fortissimo but they keep munching away on their veggies or doing bunny things like I wasn’t even in here. I also played my didgeridoo in here and they were like “huh?” and kept on binkin around and such lol. Your piggies will probably run away into their hidey house because they think it’s the end of the world and your bunny will probably get used to it in a short time and not be bothered by it. Once the piggies figure it out that the sax might not attack them (lol piggies are so cute) then they might come around too.

All animals respond differently to musical instruments.  Many animals hear music differently then humans, so the sound may be more vibration than actual sound.  They also tend to pick up on subtle overtones that are not always heard by humans.  I feel that bunny will be fine.  Since its a baby bunny, they will really be responsive to what you expose her too.  So if you always play jazz on the sax, that’s what she/he will get used to and anticipate over time.  I swear that Jessica loves watching DH’s crappy loud car movies!

If animals are anything like human babies, they tend to adjust to anything that is in the environment from the start and consider that the norm. So a baby can be toted to it’s rock star parents’ rehearsals and snooze away, while another growing up in hushed surroundings could be bothered by a regular TV. Start them young, and they should be fine.

Or deaf. In which case, it won’t matter. (Just kidding.)

I played flute, piccolo, bassoon, sax, and clarinet when we got Stormy (I was a music major at the time). The first time I pulled out the bassoon (my main instrument), it scared the living daylights out of him. By the second time I practiced, he was totally cool with it. The piccolo bugs him a little bit still, but none of the others.

It would probably depend on the rabbit, though.

Music seems to be fine for my bunnies….except for rap. I don’t normally play it..but if something with a beat like you’d normally hear in a rap song comes on in a commercial or something my one bun stops dead in her tracks and looks terribly scared. But my husband blasts his violent action movies and video games and they seem to be used to that, even music they’re fine with, just that percussion rap beat or whatever you want to call it startles them. Or whistling/beeping noises/cell phone rings. Oh and plastic bags…haha

It is only certain noises that seem to bother them. So hopefully they’ll adjust to your sax.

I used to take my bunny Larry with me to the studio where I taught piano lessons. It was a busy place, they taught voice lessons there too. I would let him hop around, the kids loved him. He seemed to enjoy himself. He was like the mascot.

My hubby plays his guitar in the living room, and the bunnies don’t mind at all. And yes… he plays loud lol. We’re not talking about an acoustic guitar here

Should I maybe consider playing in my bro’s room (down the hall) for the first week, my mom’s room(next door) for the second week, my closet (next to my buns cage) for the 3rd week, then just play normally?

Well, I would just see how the bunny reacts. In the hallway with the door closed should be enough to muffle the noise if she’s frightened… or it might not even bother her at all.

Are their ears more sensitive as babies?

I don’t really know… I would think as babies, they would be more preoccupied with entertaining themselves and you might have an easier time getting her used to the normal noises in your house.

really? we play LOUD songs at lessons, so I am worried about ear damage.

I searched All Experts for info on rabbits and loud music…

This is what I came up with: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Rabbits-703/2008/11/Singing-rabbits.htm

                                              The pertinent info is:

Yes, rabbits react to television, music on the radio, etc. They are very intelligent, attentive animals, and each one has personal preferences about music (though they tend to prefer things that are not high pitched and that don’t have loud percussion).

So high pitched and loud percussion might bother them…
