My bun does not like carrots.
But my friend who has a Lionhead, gave me some hay cubes. One of the cubes with timothy hay. The other was timothy hay with carrots.
Chacha, out of surprise (to me), ate the one with carrots
What in the world?
Is there something that is in the cubes that I don’t know about? ![]()
I have some carrots with the tops on in the fridge. I always fail when I give the carrot to her. She ignores it and hops away. I even cut the carrot in half so she can smell it.
Is this surprising behavior?
Bunny eats the cube with timothy hay and carrot, but not an actual carrot??!! ![]()
I am baffled, LOL! ![]()
I’ve never heard of tim cubes with carrot in them… Do you know what brand they are? I’m guessing the carrot would have to be in a dried form, so maybe that’s why she doesn’t mind it, it’s not an actual, fresh carrot?
Otto also seems to be more willing to eat things that are dried – he’ll eat timothy with dried herbs, even when he won’t touch the herbs otherwise.
He also never, under any circumstances, eats carrots 😛 Haha. So if Chacha is weird, so is Otto!
bunspace has some nice looking hay cubes with added things like carrot or banana I think. Don’t know if they have other binding ingredients though.

It is Kaytee brand chews.
My friend gave me some more and she is chewing on it as I type. She loves ’em!
How often is it okay to give her the cubes?

Is this what they are? Carrot Nibblers?

I don’t think I would feed this. Too many oats and wheat products. Not too mention it’s an alfalfa hay. And I can’t pronounce most of the ingredients, so it isn’t exactly “all-natural”. Kaytee doesn’t make the best quality treats unfortunately.
You can get just plain timothy hay cubes that don’t have all the extra stuff in them and that would be a much healthier treat.
Yeah, these probably aren’t the best treat. I imagine too that even so the carrots don’t really have much flavor in this product either since there are so many ingredients. I think it’s hard as well to compare a fresh carrot to one that is used dehydrated in a product such as this.
You could try those carrot shreds as well as they are already shredded which may have more fragrance to entice her to try them. My rabbits other than Pepe really love the carrots. Pepe ignores them too but I keep trying because I think they have alot of good nutrition for them.
You mean the shredded matchstick carrots Sarita, like the kinds that are in bagged salads? My buns really like those (altho they like all carrots!) and they may be less intimidating than a big hunk of carrot. They could even be sprinkled on some hay…
Yes, the matchstick ones. I think she should give those a try.
I’m not sure..
I willl not be giving her any of those anymore!
I got some regular timothy type. There is alfalfa in it to compress the item.
How often is it okay to give it to my bunny? Do cubes help with teeth?
No cubes don’t really help with the molars – they may help somewhat with the incisors but that’s not generally where rabbits have dental problems (and those are genetic usually). Nothing replaces regular hay with the teeth.
Bindi’s weird with carrots too. Or should I say ridiculously fussy! He loves baby carrots but won’t go near fresh carrots that I buy with the greens on them. He eats the greens though. The stinker.
You should be able to get plain timothy hay cubes without alfalfa, I know Oxbow makes them, not sure what other companies do. If you’re feeding them with alfalfa, I would just make sure she gets a very limited amount each week.
I don’t trust Kaytee
I am an Oxbow fan all the way .. I know petstores around my area only sell Oxbow hay. So I will need to look online. Thanks Beka ![]()
The Binky Bunny Store carries hay cakes. And all kinds of other yummy treats too. The hay cakes are in the treat section.
Hay cakes
I just got some
It is only timothy hay
Jeez, I really don’t think that people that make rabbit products realize theres a lot of bad stuff that goes into it O_o
^^^They manufacture products for people, and then say they’re all about the pets. When I was searching thru the Kaytee products online to find the one you were asking about, I almost got a headache trying to read the packages. They are all bright colors with “cutesy” names that don’t actually tell you what the product is… They are made to appeal to customers. Another thing to watch for is if all or most of their products say they are good for rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, gerbils, hamsters, mice, etc… All of these animals have very different dietary needs, so what works well for one, might be detrimental to another.
I was at the pet store with my fellow rabbit owner friend and she was saying that she buys treats for her rabbit there. I told her that a lot of it has bad stuff in it. But the bunny loves it. I said “Well, that is because rabbits have bad sweet tooths and will eat the entire treat bag/box if they could!”
