I am sure this has been asked before but I need to know what kind of litter to get. I have been using the critter litter training pearls for Pixie but now need to know what litter to get since she is not litter box trained….
thanks in advance!
It depends on your budget.
It sounds like you have one rabbit? Some owners use Carefresh or Wood Stove Pellets.
Wood stove is cheap and goes a long way.
Carefresh is nice with hiding odors, but is a little pricey. It is good when an owner has 1-2 rabbits.
I use Carefresh. It is nice, and has cool colors. I change the box 2-3 days and put hay in with the litter box. Bunnies like to do their business and eat at the same time ![]()
i like wood stove pellets because they are very good with oder and extremely cheap! but they are not normally in stores this time of year so horse stall pellets are also cheep! but if you can not find those feline pine is also a very good litter that is about the same as wood stove pellets. yesterdays new is also a really good oder control litter but the stuff made for rabbits is way more expensive then the cat stuff and there is no difference. make sure you get NO clumping or dusty cat litter it is bad for rabbits.
oh yeah thats what its called i couldn’t remember…. Brittany don’t you think Carefresh might be more inviting for a rabbit that isn’t trained then pelleted litter cuz it is so soft? idk just a guess.
My bunnies like their Carefresh. Monkey likes the softness on her little tushy ![]()
I used Aspen when I was litter training.. but then I saw that I had to change it everyday because it did not mask odors very well -_-
I higly recommend Carefresh
That stuff is fun ![]()
Carefresh is a popular choice, especially with rexes due to their high prevalence of sore hocks, but very pricy. I personally use woodstove pellets. They are cheap, absorb urine and odor very well… and they are cheap.
I was kind of confused by your initial post… you need litter because she is NOT litterbox trained? Can you clarify?
I prefer wood stove pellets or Yesterday’s News. I honestly like the YN a bit better, but wood stove pellets are so cheap that it makes up for it. Can’t beat $5 for 40lbs.
Beka when I first got Pixie I got the Critter litter potty training pearls for her. She is litterbox trained now so I did not know what to switch over to….so seems most use Carefresh, Yesterday news, and wood stove pellets! Thanks everyone!
I LOVE wood stove pellets… the fact that I can get them for about $5-7 for 40lbs helps, but even if they were more they still do a great job controlling odor. If I can’t get them for some reason (usually available year-round by me) then I also really like Feline Pine, which smells even better and I think breaks down nicer… but it’s also something like $10 for a 20lb bag? Same with Carefresh, great product but expensive. In my case, I’d rather put the extra money toward good food, but if you’ve got it go for the good stuff.

This is my thought. My husband was out of work for over a year, so it was very important that we become especially frugal where we could. I was not willing to compromise on the bunnies’ quality of diet and daily availablity of fresh veggies, so it was easiest to save on litter and buying hay in bulk.
Now that he’s working again, I still appreciate all the money we are able to save.
I’d rather spend the cash on what is GOING IN, than on absorbing what is COMING OUT!!! ![]()
I love woodstove pellets …I am running into a problem right now with about 1/4 a bag left and I can’t find anymore at the lumber stores because they say it’s “seasonal” They are very cheap and you can get lots and stock up for such a nice price! They absorb the urine really well.
Aspen for me has to be changed everyday and it doesn’t hide odors well at all.
Carefresh is GREAT. Very soft and contains the scent well. Only problem is it’s kinda pricey for something just to pee and poop in. But for one or 2 buns it’s worth it.

Lin, what about trying where your Mum gets her horse supplies? A similar sort of product should be available all year round if sold as horse stall bedding.
I seem to go back and forth between Yesterday’s News and Feline Pine. I also put hay on top of the litter since Lolli likes to go while she’s munching. Both litters are about $20 for a 30lb bag.
Lintini, do you have access to a dry basement, garage, or storage shed? I bought several bags (maybe 7 or 8?) in the winter to last me the full year until they’re available again. Plus I have to drive about 20 minutes away just to get them, so I’d rather spend $50-60 at once, load up my trunk, and not have to worry about it all year.
BUT… you have to have DRY storage. I keep mine underneath my unused dining room table… lol. Trashy, I know… but whatever. I’m not here to impress anyone ;o)
