› Forum › HABITATS AND TOYS › Homemade Cube Condo? HELP!
I want to make a homemade cube condo for my bunny, but I’m not sure how to do it! So ANY advice available will really help!
Maybe to be a bit more specific, what flooring should I use? Where can I get ramps? Basics for constructing them? WHAT is a Zippie? Any other tips?
A ziptie is also known as a cable tie. it is a platic strip that once you tighten it does not open again. You buy them in packages of like 100 at auto parts places or hardware stores or $store even. I bet walmart has them too.
You may not need ramps, most buns can jump one cube high.
Flooring can be tricky, it depends on your rabbit. Some bunnies do well with rugs, or cardboard, others need a surface that can handle messes, then coroplast (signboard) is a good choice or even a tarp.
You need to figure out the shape of condo you want to determine how many grids you need. Be careful to buy the right kind: some grids have larger squares and a bunny could escape through these. You want the ones with 1.5″ square openings.
Have you visited the great habitats gallery under “bunny info” in the green bar above?
Well, thats where I got the idea, see, i want my future bunny to be extra happy, so I have decided to build one of them. But the instructions seemed a bit vague. Can you give me a specific NAME for the flooring?
Coroplast is the name. It is also called signboard. It will help you keep your baby rabbit’s condo very clean as it can be wiped up.
I saw the Coroplast info. I’d like something softer for my bunnies feet. Any suggestons?
For a kit I can’t recommend rugs as she may ingest some by ripping at it and eating it. I would go with flat corrugated cardboard or grass mats until she is bigger and can be trusted around carpet and rugs not to eat them.
Do you know if it’d be easy to switch out the grass mat or cardboard for carpet? (I know Im being a little picky. I’m really worried about messing up, plus I want this to go perfectly) Is there something maybe a bit more colorful?
I forget that looks are always important too.. I am not so good in that department. There are other members on here who will have more creative suggestions.
I do know though that switching it later won’t be a problem.
Really, cardboard is great: they LOVE to tear it up, you’ll see. They are a ‘destructive’ species. LOL
LOL! I’m sure they are. I’m not too concerned about looks, it’s just that the ones in amazing habitats are just that AMAZING! they match and everything. I’d LOVE having one like that.
yeah… my grid pen isn’t in that gallery for a reason… — seriously though for a kit easy cleaning should be your main goal. The cube condos can be changed and enhanced at any time. If you can find colorful grids — it will look bright. rabbits love all manner of cardboard but only the plain brown kind is safe for them.
I really like the condos that incorporate wood. If you are good with building things, you might like one like those.
Good Idea! I really should be worried about keeping my bunny happy and safe. But will it need to be replaced if she soils it?
If she pees up the cardboard very much, yes, toss it and replace. But if you make her litterbox cozy with the soft-sorbent and hay, chances are she will quickly take to peeing there.
Should I be concerned about the fact that soft-sorbent is scented? will that be a problem?
well, to be honest, I’d go with an unscented one like Yesterday’s News or Carefresh. That way you can transfer some urine she may leave somewhere other than the litterbox to the box to make it the obvious pee place.
Could I maybe mix a bit of the scented in? I dont want an overwhelming smell, beause I’ve heard their urine is worse when they’re not spayed.
well, not at this time where her hormones have not kicked in. you can try mixing it, but if you change the box often, there will be no stink.
Ok thanks alot! when do there hormones kick in?
at around 18 weeks, you can’t miss it. It is quite evident with behaviors such as biting, marking, territoral defending… circling and mounting things.
OK, then i can get her spayed right?
yes.
I find that a solution that looks great, is the easiest to clean and is very durable (hard for bunnies to chew) is coroplast. My bunny cage’s floors are made of this and it works great!
Some tips are:
For the cage to hold together the best (not sag over time) then you should put the zip ties in a X formation so two cross over each other to give the cage more stability.
Also to support the shelves you should use either dowlels (wooden sticks) Or I used PVC piping because it was cheaper and the bunnies did not chew it.
Before you make the cage you should think of a design. I drew how I wanted my cage to look before hand (what i wanted the shelves to look like and where I wanted the doors) and it worked out great.
Be prepared to get zip tie burn.
Also when zip tyeing be sure to aim the ends of the ziptyes out of the cage so the sharp points (from cutting the zip tyes) won’t poke your bunny.
Make sure your bunny is easy to access within the cage so you can get to her if she is sick or something.
I found that dog ear clips (binder clips) work the best for clipping the coroplast or whatever flooring you have into place.
Dog leash clips work the best to hold doors closed.
Um… I can’t think of anything else right now I’ll let you know if I think of any other tips!
I was thinking of your condo again, too, moonlight. Maybe post your picture again to show here, or take some new ones showing the details.
ziptie burn… LOL! i believe it!
Ok here is a picture of my condo!
I’ll see if I can get some detailed pictures and post them later.
Thanks ALOT guys! Is Coroplst to hard though? I think I’ll have one floor fragment a bed area. Then a larger fragment of coroplast, and an equal fragment of cardboard. Sound good? I’ll see if I can post a plan.
moonlight, how do your rabbits deal with slippery?
They got used to the slippery floors, I did put some grass mats in the cage to help with this though, but before I had the mats they just had to get used to it and eventually they got the jumping right. Now they hop up without even thinking.
I like wooden shelves for better traction. Kyoshi, you might use coroplast as flooring and go with something rougher for shelves if your new kit has trouble on slippery surface.
Thanks! I definetely do NOT want her slipping or falling.
Moonlight, your condo looks like a dream house! Where do you get the coroplast? Lowe’s, Home Depot or any store? How much does it cost? Is it easy to cut it to the size I want? What do you use to stick the coroplast to the condo?
I tried to build a condo earlier, the condo has no problem building, just the flooring. I need something is durable and easy to clean. I used a few containers + litter boxes to fill in the wood flooring. It didn’t work well for me, my rabbit pooped and urinated every where. Everytime I have to bring all the containers + litter boxes out to clean. So I gave up the condo due to the flooring issue.
Thank you thank you for the information.
BTW, where did you buy the grid? I bought some from Target, some with bigger spacing, so I couldn’t use that.
I am getting mine at costco. it’s an 8 cube kit (btw, anyone know the dimensions of them?)and it’s cheaper than the walmart’s 4 cube set.( am I allowed to say that? I think I am. If not tell me) I’m getting any other supplies for the cage at Home Depot. Is it hard to undo the cubes? Are they easy to assemble? Do the panels COME in cubes, or do you cube them yourself? Can you just pop off a panel in a cube, or do you have to arrange the panels in a wierd way to fit it? Can ANYONE help me with DESIGNING the cage. I’ve tried like 5 different drawing style( 3-d was too hard, 2-d didn’t CAPTURE it, it ended up looking more like sensless scribles, and the computer drawing did the smae as the 2-d. Oh wait. thats only 3. Oh well.). And I cant get play doh to WORK with me. It Takes me FOREVER to make the panels, and I can’t stand it up right. Anyone else using woooden dowels for the support? Is anyone using them to hold up shelves? It look a bit like you do Moonlight wolf. Any Advice on doors? And Moolight, whats that tunnel thing? I am using the instructions given by one of those links on the Cool Habitats thing, but the house dosen’t seem big enugh. Sorry to bombard you guys with all these questions, but one of the crucial things to my buns life (well at least in my eyes) is her house. I’m gonna think of more too, I just know it.
Kyoshi, t is not that hard to design and get the condo, just the flooring I am still not sure what to do with it yet. If not mistaken you are taking a baby bunny or two home? Right now I am fostering one 10 weeks old baby, she is smaller than my adult bunny, even the smaller grid that I bought from Target, her head can squeeze through. This scares me, I read somewhere either they got stuck or they are able to squeeze out. So make sure the grid is smaller enough, you won’t have that problem when they grow bigger.
If starting with babies, I suggest use 2 x 2 square panels will be enough. Giving them too much space means more cleaning to do. Make sure you get bigger litter box, so when they spray, the urine won’t be outside of the litter box. Now I have to clean the floor here and there for accident (urine and poop)on the tile. After your rabbits are spayed and getting bigger, you can add in more space for them by adding more panels. A smaller area is easier to litter train your rabbits too, once you think they get the idea of littler train, you are sure able to add in more spaces.
The panels can use zipties to tie together, cut off the end. If you want to take the panels off, cut off the zipties, they are off.
I am sorry I cannot offer a better help. I myself have problem figure out the flooring of the condo. The condo I built before, I used litter boxes and large container to fill in all the space in the condo. Even with that, my rabbit and the new rabbit spray everywhere. I ended up cleaning a lot of litter boxes and containers, after I just cleaned one another one has urine in it. I don’t think the rabbits mind, since it is their marking, just I mind the mess. Even with the container and litter boxes, accidents outside of the protected area did happen. That’s the reason I suggest starting small. My rabbit when he first came home, he sure knows how to mark his territory. After a few months settle in, now he is doing pretty good.
I hope telling you my problem cans help you out in designing the cube. Oh ya, I used a “S” hook for the opening. Good luck with your design.
Do FEMALE rabbits “spray” (What is spraying? It sounds like a male missing his mark in the litter). I’m hoping to get a female. So, you can just switch and add as you go huh? Thats cool. I’d like some more info if you guys don’t mind. Whats an S hook?
look on youtube.com, there is a video how to make a rabbit/bunny condo on there by a vet & from there, is a link to his own website. trying to find it right now for you! Remember, she’s going to still be a baby when you get her, so start smaller, then gradually go bigger whe she’s able to be litter trained! Or you will have lots af area to clean, LOL! & definately need ramps for a lil one! HEHE! So cute!
the site is http://www.rabbitcondo.com
How High should I make it?
And Also, I find lots of litterboxes designed for buns are ugly looking.Any Ideas?
I’ve never seen that video 4Lily – it’s a great video! He gives alot of good instruction and he’s easy to listen too.
Anyone have the Taget “organize-it” cube demensions? Any one that does please tell me. It would help A LOT!
make sure the cubes have only 1 inch by 1 inch holes in the grids!!
Twinklie, I got the coroplast at a sign store, I found the sign store using this website:
http://www.guineapigcages.com/where.htm
Moonlight, would you mind answering my questions? I’d really appreciate it if you did.
Kyoshi, the Target grid is 14″ x 14″. I would start with 1 level first, make sure she is very litter train then expand to 3 x 2 grid, then may be introduce another level. Then keep adding when you have time and space. I think keep expanding makes the rabbit to explore out would be great too. 1 time too much space to explore may not be such a good thing for the cleaning person. LOL
The other day I added a upper bunk for my rabbits and I put a carrot there for them to discover. Twinkle, the baby discovered it and hop on it within minutes. Charlie, the bigger one, tore out the newspaper at the lower bunk, looks frustrated, may be he could smell the carrot but didn’t get the taste of it. It took him a while to finally decide to hop up. It is very funny to watch their reaction.
Regarding your questions about spraying. Males and females can do this to mark their territory. They can actually spray urine over a few feet. (sort of like how cats can spray) Normally if a rabbit is neutered or spayed earlier enough, this can help prevent this from continuing. Not all rabbits will spray, but it is not uncommon for a rabbit to begin spraying when they hit sexual maturity around 3 – 6 months.
We’ve had members say that their bunny area is very smelly even though they clean the litter everyday. They check further and discover urine marks on the wall. (Can be clearish)
Once a rabbit is spayed/neutered it should get better if a rabbit is spraying, but for my bunny Jack who wasn’t neutered for a couple of years (at least) he got into a habit and he will spray even now and he’s been neutered for 6 years now. His spray is easy to spot, so I can clean it up with out a problem. So far he is the only bunny that has continued to spray. Males do typically spray more than females, but females can do it too.
Thanks ALOT! guys. Any more Advice would help to the fifth infinity.
Don’t buy a rabbit litter box, most bunnies don’t like them much, and always pee over the front edge. Just go with a regular rectangular cat litter box instead. My bunnies love them
I agree with Monkeybun, get a large one. I got a regular smaller rectangular one, but the pee and poop still fall out.
Sorry Kyoshi, but I didn’t know what the dimensions of the cubes were so I could not answer your question! and since Twinklie’s question was directed at me I felt the need to answer it.
As for the litter box I really like the one I got off binkybunny, it has a grate to prevent digging and it makes cleaning so much easier.
Also I found to keep my room cleaner I turned up the sides of the coroplast to keep the hay and poop that they had flung out of their litter box in the cage.
Oh thats cool! What is that tube though in your picture?
Thanks Moonlight, more questions. How do you clean the habitat? I believe when my rabbits in the habitat, they will sure have droppings on the upper bunks. Time over time all the flooring will sure has a lot of dust, hair etc etc, how do you clean it? Is the flooring attached to the grids? Thank you so much for taking your time to answer my questions. My son thinks your rabbits are living in palace. Thanks you so much!
Kyoshi, I found this great cage designs at ebay, please enter the item number 290453554446 and 250646004378. It looks fairly easy to build. But remember we need it for rabbits, so I will do 2 grid high, my rabbit figured out the way to hop out with just 1 grid high. The coroplast that turned up the side like Moonlight did would prevent the flying poop and pee. LOL
Now, I need to find out where to get the coroplast and the grid cheap! Any suggestions? Thank you all!
Ok, how’s this sound so far? By the sound of your advice, this is my plan.
A 2×2 base, Totaling 24″ on each side, covered in Coroplast.
1 level
2 squares high
Kyoshi, sounds good to me. You can always expand the size with the growth of your rabbit. The smaller of the space the easier to litter train. Do make sure that her head cannot squeeze through the grid. My baby rabbit at 10 weeks can push her head through the small Target grid. That’s why I am holding back the idea of making the condo yet. Let’s just wait till she is a big bigger to squeeze through, LOL!
I just ran all over twon for the coroplast, and all the people I asked, they gave me a blank look, didn’t know what I was asking for. One pointed me to this store and the other. I tried Target, Home Depot, Hobby Lobby and Staples. No luck! I came home found the cheapest coroplast online, it is uline.com. I think when I decide to go for the condo, I will get from uline. $5.40 for 10 sheets 24″ x 36″ or 40″ x 48″ for $11.15.
I am still not sure I want to go more than two levels, cleaning issue. I just can’t stand to see dropping here and there, not in the litter box. Moreover, my rabbits get to go out to run in my yard and watch TV with my kids. So, they just need a decent size cage.
Good luck! And do post a picture for us after you are done! Of course, with your baby running in there.
I believe at HomeDepot, it’s called Corrugated Platic Sheet, but it only comes in white. I think I’m gonna focus on creamy pinks and whites in her cage, so it’ll work for me.
Kyoshi, the tube is actually a concrete former tube called a Quick Tube (I think) I got it at home depot, it is supposed to be used to mold concrete into pillar like shapes.
How big is your rabbit going to be? My condo is 3 grids by 2 grids and it is 4 grids high, I find that is sufficient for two small bunnies (3-4 pounds) 2X2 grids would probably be fine for one bunny around the same size, and as twinklie said if he/she grows then you can just reconfigure it to make it bigger.
I didn’t get my coroplast at home depot but I would guess that corrugated plastic would be the same thing. When I asked if they had coroplast, the workers just looked at me strange
Twinklie, I clean my habitat just by vacuuming, the condo has a big door that goes all the way to the top (all the middle panels open) so I can just stick the hose part of the vacuum and suck everything up.
The floor is made by having a NIC grid base and I put coroplast on top of the grids which are clipped on by binder/ dog ear clips. I also used PVC piping to support the floors.
Have you checked where to find the coroplast at this site?
http://www.guineapigcages.com/where.htm
I am using that as a beginner for my baby. Th litter box’ll take up som room though, so i might make it a 3×2. I’m doing 2 squares because I have lots of hidey places for an escaped bun. I’ll be posting/taking a TON of pics. I’ll hopefully have: Baby as a youngling; Baby with bros/sises; Baby with momma; Baby sleeping. I will DEFINETELY have Baby coming home; baby close-up; Baby free runnin’; Baby in cage. And some more!
Can’t wait to see them! HEHE!
Me too!
Thanks Moonlight! With the link you provide was very helpful, I found this sign store close to where I live. They carry 4′ x 8′ for $30. I asked the owner to keep an eye for some leftover, since I don’t have much idea what to do with mine yet. I should have just ask for corrugated sheet instead. I think I will use piece of wood for the support of level. Thank you so much Moonlight, without your help, I guess the idea of my condo is still floating in the air.
Kyoshi, your condo sounds so pricessly dreamy, how sweet! I will stay right here waiting for the pictures.
Thanks guys! I’m SO glad for your support, without your help, Kyoshi would be stuck in a cardboard box for the rest of her life!LOL! I am SOO glad I have so many people who care about Kyoshi. Any more things I need to know? I’m on here 24/7, so I’ll read it as soon as I get it.
Yesterday I started to build my condo’s structure with my son. All I can say was, the design was off when I started to build it. At first I used all the zipties to hold the grids together, it turned out, it DID NOT work well for me. My son saw me struggling with the whole condo, he finally decided to call on his dad to help. Am I glad or what? I felt so lucky to have my husband around whenever I stumble through things I can’t handle. My husband said I really should use the connector to stabilized the condo, at least give it a base. Ok, I see that, because mine with zipties together wasn’t really standing up. So, we cut off all the zipties and re-do the whole condo. I really don’t have any talent to be a builder. I told my husband what I was going to do, and he implement it and makes the whole things work! After 3 hours, the outline structure of the condo was done. We put a few carpet on the grids to let my two rabbits to check it out. They were very excited, and pooped all over. Well, all I can say is my rabbits are really pooping machine! Now I really see I need the coroplast to go around the condo, just to stop some flying poop and pee, I am so tired of cleaning the overflow pee on my tile.
Thank you again Moonlight, without your inspiration and help, this condo is still in my head. So, the condo is partial done. We used up all the zipties, have to get more to secure all the grids. Then the flooring. Please let me know what I need to do to make it better.
That looks nice! Are you going to do an additional level? You have room for a short third level, just make sure to put a top on it. It’s good that you’re going to still use zipties to reinforce it, the connectors don’t always stay put. I think the combination of connectors PLUS zipties is the best way to go.
I am not sure if anyone is still following this, but if you are, thats great, because I need help. How high should I make her cage? 1 cube high or two? (I am NOT adding another level if i do 2 cubes high) If i do 2 cubes high, do I need to have a wooden dowel for support? I know you guys are suggesting 2×2, but if i have a bed, (cat bed), bowls (dog bowls for teacup or toy dog breeds), a water bottle, and a litterpan (cat), I think I might need to go 2×3, or even 3×3. Is that a good idea? Is it too much room? And also, does Coroplast flake? like if i get it pink, will it eventully start to flake and turn white?
I would not go less than 2×4 grids. One grid high is too short for a cage. She needs space to stand upright. And what do you mean you are not adding another level if you do 2 grids?
If i do 2 grids high, that dosent mean I want another level, as in using plywood shelvs. I only would use it for No Escape purposes. I’m gonna introduce another level later.
Would 14″ high be tall enough for a baby bunny to not be able to hop out?
I was wondering, maybe Corrugated Plastic is long fancy talk for CoroPlast?
No. My adult ones jump 32″ with ease and baby buns sometimes display a tremendous agility in climbing even.
So, should i try 28″?
You might want to clip a sheet on top just to be safe
Thanks!

I was wondering, maybe Corrugated Plastic is long fancy talk for CoroPlast?
Hmmm. I never thought about it, but that would make sense…
I making one myself, I found this site it’s really helpful. http://www.rabbitcondo.com/
I’m actually making one similar to Lara and Harrel’s deluxe, wide rabbit condo, I used there plans to get started.
Hope this helps you
I am still getting more and more confused the more I read information. I though that info was supposed to CLEAR everthing up, not create more fog! I am getting hoplessly confused. Anyone have any ways to clear this up? I think my main confusions are the furnishings, the material, and the structure.
Kyoshi,
I’m more of a visual person, so when it came time to create a new habitat for Sammy, I started with looking at pix of habitats I liked. I also narrowed it down by what would be easiest to clean. So you could try looking at the Habitat gallery section, or on people’s profiles at their pix, to find a set up you like the look of. Then analyze the components and create it. maybe that would lessen the confusion. Also might do an internet browse of cages you like too, and try to make something similar. Remember, Kiss. Keep it simple…
I get what you’re saying! It can get complicated. There are so many different ways, how-tos, and designs, which is sometimes nice, but I know for me personally, sometimes too many choices just lead to indecision. (You should have seen me looking for fabric at the store for travel pillowcases… uhm. It took about an hour. Too. Many. Choices.)
Will you be building the caging by yourself, or do you have a friend or family member who will be helping? If someone will be helping, try asking their opinion also. Very often, two heads are better than one. You can get together and look at pictures online, and if the other person is good at building and conceptualizing things, they might be able to offer good suggestions too.
I didn’t want to waste a lot of time, money, or brain power building a custom habitat, so we went the xpen route, and I have no regrets. Over two years later, they still look brand-new. Easy to clean. Nothing for bunnies to chew or destroy. But I know in your situation, you need to be conscious of the dimensions. No one can really tell you definitively which way to go. It’s something you just need to figure out.
(You should have seen me looking for fabric at the store for travel pillowcases… uhm. It took about an hour. Too. Many. Choices.)
Haha. I’m like that in the supermarket!
Kyoshi, I like RabbitsPam and Bekas advice about keeping it simple. I suggest just building a simple pen using the NIC grids to start with. You can even order C&C cage kits on ebay. They have some examples of pens that are for guinea pigs. If you’re getting a young bunny, a NIC pen might be better while you litter train and there is a lot of cleaning up involved. Then as you get to know your bunny, you can design the cage to suit her, her likes and dislikes.
I don’t know if this link will be a help or a hinderance at this point. It’s a detailed step by step for building a condo. So if it causes more confusion, just save it to a file and look at it when your ready. http://www.longislandrabbitrescue.org/NIC-plans.pdf
To much info/detail is can get overwhelming for sure!! I know, i’m an info junkie.
