Okay, well I just went to refill my boys’ water bottles. I noticed come white stuff on the end of the “spout” and found out the metal of the water bottle is basically… well, I don’t know what to call it. It’s like their little tongues have been wearing away at the metal. I’ll lightly run my nail down the spout, and once i reach that little spot it  makes that cringing, nail-against-chalkboard noise.  I swab out (the inside and the outside) the little spout with a Qtip every once in a while, but I’ve never noticed anything. There is that bit of white stuff that makes it almost look like acid caused that little spot  (that caused me to first notice this).

I have the bottles in the dishwasher, but I don’t think I’m going to use them again. I have the boys in a pen right now with just a water crock in there to see if they even know what to do with it. Neither of them have ever used one before, always bottles. I’d rather use a crock than a bottle, as this is actually my second problem with water bottles. The first seemed to just be a bad bottle, but still.

Any ideas what this could be? They are both acting fine, but I will keep watching them.

weird? Maybe they have been chewing at it and their saliva has affected the metal.

It sounds like it is just calcium/mineral buildup from your water (like in the inside of your tea pot). Mine does that too since we have hard water. I think you can soak it in hot vinegar and then scrub it off. It should be fine.

Thanks, I’ll try the vinegar thing.
I don’t know if this changes anything, but sometimes it does sound like they are almost chewing on the tip. Maybe they can’t get the water as fast as they’d like? I’m going to try water bowls in their cages along with a water bottle and see if they prefer the bowl.
Mocha, not yet. I’m waiting until I get back from vacation (leaving next Wednesday) to move any further.

Yes, switch to a bowl. It’s bad for their teeth to bite the spouts, or get a very large bottle with larger spout that gives lots of water per lick; I found sometimes rabbits bite the spouts out of frustration when they can’t get enough to drip out.

I get the calcium build up on my water bottles occasionally, that sounds exactly like what you are describing. You can still offer the bottles but I also like to offer the crock too, just in case.

So how do y’all keep your guys from dumping their water. No matter how heavy the bowl, they still manage to tip it over. They do the same with their food. I’d have a mess and thirsty rabbits if I used a bowl :-/

Ashleyyy, smart crocks and quick-lock crocks are great because they come in different sizes & they’re hard plastic bowls that twist and lock into a bracket that mounts on the cage or pen wire. To remove them for refilling and cleaning, you twist the bowl one way and it comes out. To lock it in place, twist the other way tightly into the bracket and it’s snug and they can’t tip it over, rock it, or anything. They’re also transparent in pretty colors like pink, turquoise, blue, etc. or clear so you can easily see how much food and water are in there. There’s one that’s a corner crock and they have stainless steel cups on brackets as well. They’re at the DrsFosterSmith.com store. They come in different sizes so you can get one for your veggies too.

I find that Fern digs the water if it is in a bowl, maybe I’ll try one again and see if she still digs it.
