› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Should I get the rabbits a fan?
Here’s my setup. I have a window a/c in the living room and a fan in the living room to blow the air towards the rabbit room which is at the end of the living room. Not a lot of air reaches there, however. I was wondering if I should get a little fan, like maybe a tabletop for the rabbit room. Would this benefit them at all or is it a waste of money I don’t have? I want them to be as comforable as possible in this heat. Today is supposed to be excruciatingly hot.
Also I’m a very paranoid crazy person.
I worry about leaving fans and window a/c on when I’m not home? Do you leave them on?
I thought I read (maybe on here?) that fans don’t do anything for bunnies because they don’t sweat? So they’re not actually cooling.
Why are you concerned about leaving fans and A/C on when you’re not home?
IMO, that’s the best part about being OUT in this heat… eventually returning home and walking into the nice, cool house!!!
I’m scared they overheat or something. I think maybe I will leave everything on today. It’s just too dang hot.
I leave the little window ac in the bunny room on all the time now and I was glad to find out during some recent storms and short power outages, that if we do lose power the air conditioner automatically kicks back on as soon as it’s back.
I do turn it off for a little bit before bed, just to give it a rest but I probably don’t have to, just makes me feel better.
We have central air and we keep it low (70 degrees) during these hot summer months. But if we’re going to be out of the house for longer than a few hours, we’ll bump it up to 74 degrees. It still keeps it cool enough for the bunnies, but it’s not running as hard while we’re gone. I like to think it saves our electric bill… just a little bit. LOL.
Ani says Yes!
She loves fans LOL

Ani is IDENTICAL to my Max, but uppy-eared. Do you think she’s a lop mix or something? Her body looks “loppish”… Let me see if I can find a pic of Max that proves my point…
I found her outside, but I believe she is a Holland Lop dwarf type mix. As she is aging, her ears are much more floppy, more helicopter like, and they are wider then regular ‘up’ eared bunnies, so she’s definetly got a lop ear mix in her, I think holland because of her arounded face/nose.
Zeus has his own little fan that I got at Walmart on clearance a few years ago (got it for myself originally, but now it’s solely his

. It was $9, so even in my broke college student budget!
It is similar to this one (only not exactly obviously because this one’s expensive!):

I have it on and pointed at his cage quite often. When he’s having out of cage time though I turn it off. I even use it when the AC is on, too.
Me and my hubby gave in and got a portable AC unit for the bunnies
With the temperatures here in Oregon rising, me thinks it was a good investment. Its heading to 37C (97F) today and tomorrow ![]()
I would not leave a fan on in my absence, I am with you LPT. I would add some refrigerated tiles to their habitats.
Hmmm…I always leave a fan on in the rabbit room to just circulate the air since I have central A/C and I have never worried – they cannot get to it at all. I have to wonder what the point would be to not run the fan during the heat of the day…
I keep my central A/C at 78 degrees both up and downstairs as well and it’s very comfortable. I’d freeze my own buns off if I kept it at 70 degree’s like Beka :~)

I would leave it on if it was stationary, like a ceiling fan. I am worried about appliances running in my absence because I’m in the country and electricity delivery fluctuates as I can see in my light bulbs that sometimes dim or brighten up. I worry about some thing shorting out. One time, I was in my basement after we just bought this house, and smoke started coming out from the plug-in of our water softener. I now have everything on surge protectors.
That makes sense where you are Petzy! I never run my dishwasher or dryer or clothes washer when I’m not home only because I am afraid of the water running over with the dishwasher and clotheswasher – being in insurance I hear this happening all the time. My ceiling fans run all the time in the summer as well.
Love that pic of the fan lovin bun!
i would make sure to keep the fan cord out of nibble range…
Usako once nibbled the subwoofer cord on our receiver,, we heard a loud ‘pop’ and then she took off running back to her cage. the subwoofer was dead…
We leave our central AC on all the time when it is hot- it is more cost efficient to keep a house cool more often than to let it reach super high temps and make the AC work harder to get it back to a normal, comfortable temp. Obviously this would depend on the energy efficiency of your AC unit also.
I leave fans on when we are gone to keep the air circulating in the bunny room- but we also have a saltwater fish tank in the same room that has computer controlled fans and a water chiller.
I agree about leaving a ceiling fan on or AC running on low (if a window one) or central on, but small appliances can overheat so I think you are right to be concerned. I might trust one of those big metal box fans that can just sit on a floor and be set on low. They tend to be quite cheap, and we used to use those for hours or all night when I was younger without a problem.
Refrigerating tiles to let them lie on, plus a frozen plastic water or soda bottle that is left in their cage really helps them cool off. They can lie next to it, or lick the condensation. Closing blinds to keep the sun out also helps. If you cool off the room a lot before you have to go out, it will stay cooler longer.
I had learned years ago that running a fan blowing directly on a bunny wasn’t so good for them. Running an oscillating fan just around the top of their cage and around the room circulates the air and cools it down, but doesn’t create a wind on them directly. They might be sensitive to very cold water, but an ice cube in the bottom of the dish can melt and also keep it cool.
Once you’re home with them, you can run a washcloth under cold water, wring it out to just be damp, and wrap their ears in it. Coolness on the ears brings their body temperature down. They usually let you leave it on like a turban, because it feels good.
I leave the AC on for the bunnies all the time. The AC gets turned down to 66 F at night then let it warm up on its own to about 73-75 (when hubby is not home, that is too hot for him), or if I am too cold I will turn the heat on for a little to get the chill out. I am always cold, hubby is always hot. It is a frustrating thing in our house! The bunnies do have a fan that they LOVE! If I move the fan they will follow wherever it is pointing. I do turn it off when I leave though, I worry about them getting to the cord.
The fan in the bunny room does seem to help. A lot less stuffy in there. Storm was scared of the noise at first but he’s used to it now. I have a thermometer in there now so I monitor the temp. If it goes above 25C I turn the fan and A/C up.
Another hot week is forecast…
