I caught the rabbit that’s been wandering around the yard, now I need to find out who to contact or what shelter I can bring it to.  It has a bulge under its neck that might be a goiter, I’m not really sure, but it probably needs a checkup.

Here are the options I know about.

          1. Put signs up that say FOUND rabbit around your neighborhood and in local vet offices, and go to your local Animal Care and Control and list this rabbit under “FOUND”. That way if anyone is looking for this rabbit, they  can go to Animal Care and Control, and  there will be a record there for this bunny. I know around here some of the Animal rescues will microchip rabbits, and so you could double check if this bunny has a chip with a vet office(as many times they have the scanners) or at the Animal Care and Control.

          2. Turn him into your local Animal Shelter. (Normally there is no fee if the animal you are surrending is not yours).  Unfortunately  Rabbit Rescues will not normally take rabbits from individuals as they are saving rabbits about to be euthanized.  (however, you can call around and ask if  you’d like, I just know that’s the norm)

IF the Animal Shelter near you does euthanize adoptables, then you can be asked to be notified prior to that happening if you want to take on responsibility of rehoming him. Some places like SPCA and Humane Societies do take in rabbits and they won’t euthanize adoptable animals. They may still euthanize sick, injured or aggressive (depends on the severity)

          3. IF you decide that you may want to keep this bunny after you have put up the FOUND information, and no one replies, there is a waiting period and you would have to check with your local animal service to find out what that is for your location.

This information is based on what I know about what my local Animal Services provide. You may have to call your local ACS, SPCA, or humane society to get info.

By the way… So wonderful of you to rescue him and basically saved his life!

I would look up some local shelters, give them a call and see what they say and if they have room. Is the lump hard at all? From the picture the rabbit looks to be a decent weight, the lump could just be a little pooch forming.

I was just thinking that about the “lump” — could it just be a dewlap?

Congratulations on getting bunny secured! I’ll wager the ‘lump’ under the neck (if I’m looking at the pic correctly) is a dewlap, and if so nothing to worry about…might be a cue as to this being a female. (both males and females get these, but it’s more pronounced in the female)
If so, and you find she is not spayed, be on the lookout for kits in the vicinity.

I’ve never heard of a dewlap before, interesting. I haven’t seen any other rabbits, but that’s good to know. Part of me wants to keep the rabbit, but I don’t know if it would get along with Daphny, a dominant female, and I also don’t know if it has any health conditions that could be spread to my rabbit. I just want to make sure that it gets a good home and someone to take good care of it. It took me 6 hours to finally catch it, and the poops it made were dark brown and wet looking, and that didn’t seem like a good sign. I put some timothy hay and water in the carrier, so hopefully this will help. I just hope I can have someone come over soon, because I’m going out of town in 3 days.

I contacted a local place that already has 350 rabbits and isn’t accepting any more. I don’t want to bring it to a shelter where it could be killed. I guess I’ll keep looking.

Didn’t you say in the other thread that you’re visiting in Walnut, California? (is that Walnut Creek in the east bay area?) Are any of our board members near there who would be willing to help?

EDIT: After a quick Google, I can see you’re more towards L.A. …I was thinking of members who are up in the Bay Area near San Francisco…sorry.

Thank you so much for tending this poor lost bun! Especially this time of year, it’s no time for a bun to be wandering outdoors!
And as long as the poos are not mushy or just plain watery goo, they should firm up soon with hay back in her diet.

I’m in Walnut, which is on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County. There was a nice bunny boarding lady nearby in Chino, and I wish I could remember her name and contact info, in case she might have some useful information.

There are two groups I know of towards the eastern part of LA. One is Bunny Bunch S.P.C.R. and the other is Zooh Corner. Both have websites with phone numbers. I hope they can help you

I think Bunny Bunch is the one in Chino.

That wouldn’t be The Bunny Bunch, would it? I think one of our members used to take her bunnies there for bonding and really liked the setup.

Here’s a link, BB, I hope it’s okay for me to post this?

I’m hoping that the rabbit will “grow” on my mom, and she’ll decide to keep it as a pet. I’m a college student, and when I transfer to university hopefully this spring, Daphny will be coming with me, since she’s my rabbit, but maybe this found rabbit could be my mom’s.

Daphny is a dominant female who is extremely territorial, and she seems to be okay since Misty passed away a year ago. She has a life-sized plush rabbit that she grooms and snuggles with. I’m wary of bonding her with a rabbit of unknown health so it doesn’t pass something to Daphny, but also Daphny has the E. Cuniculi in her system, and I don’t want to pass that on to another rabbit.

I guess I’ll see what happens.

The shelters in CA are excellent, so if you do take her to a rescue I know you will put her in good hands. I would call the ones suggested above.

If you do keep her, you need to get her to a vet asap to make sure she doesn’t have any illnesses, parasites, mites etc. If you do that, the vet also may be able to rehome her for you. If she’s ill, you probably want to surrender her to a rescue’s care for now. The vet may know of one personally that she likes, or has colleagues affiliated with. Look in your yellow pages for Exotics Vets to find one that handles rabbits.

                                  Wonderful catch, btw!

Please be VERY VERY careful if you do this, and use it as a last resort.  I dropped  friendly, tame, chubby, healthy cat off at the local Animal Control Shelter because my apartment didn’t allow pets, and I found him outside on the sidewalk.  I told them, in no uncertain terms, that if no one claimed him, they were to call me and I would pick him up before he was put on the euthanasia list.  I seriously told this to the receptionist like 3 times to be sure.

I called back about 5 days later to check the status of him, and he was on the euthanasia list, scheduled to be put down THAT DAY.  They weren’t going to call me, if I hadn’t called back he’d have been euthanized. .

He’s now my parents’ cat, and they love him to bits.  So please use the Animal Control Shelter as a last resort, and if you do have to drop him off there, call them DAILY to ensure he doesn’t end up on the euthanasia list!

I wish I could take them all, or at least go help them feed and clean and play with them all!
