Today we went to the vet school with my dad in order to have a check-up and talk about the spay. Here is what happened there: we get into the vet’s office and she is not there, there is only one of her vet-assistants. We say to her that we want to talk to [NAME EDITED OUT] (the vet) and she says that she is at some exams of her students and she will be there soon if we want to wait. We say that we dont really need to have a check up cause we had one last month and she is perfectly healthy. So we wait for the woman to come in order to ask her the questions I had prepared. She comes, and talks to us OUTSIDE her office (meaning: without her assistant listening) and I ask her about students performing the spay and she says yes with other doctors and usually with her observing but not always. I ask about the anesthetic and she says that’s our job, we use what is best for each case (injection or gas). All this time she was really rude, aswering the questions saying things like ’this is a vet school if something goes wrong then that’s how things are, we are here to teach students’ and her true intention was to make me believe that it is better in her own office and that there my bunny wont be treated properly….LIES….it was sooo obvious she was angry that I went to the vet school and wasted her time of course because she wouldnt get the 200 euros that she would get if we did it at her office and stuff… My dad was furious and was this close to start shouting to her because of her manners and way of talking to me.
She said that if we want to do it there we can either do it next week BUT she will be gone for the exams of her students (intention: I wont be here so you should bring her at my office) or the week after that BUT if something happens post surgery the school will be closed so we will have to go to another vet…yeah like there are no other vets in thessaloniki (intention: do it at my office I will be there to take more money). I say again it was really obvious by the way she was talking. The school will be closed 2 weeks later and opens again on August 23.
We left pretty upset without arranging the spay. While she was talking I was so upset and worried (of course that’s was she wanted me to be and this is why she was talking like that). Then in the car my dad started yelling and saying what a b**** she was and that there is no way we are going to her (and I so agree) and that the vet school is supposed to be the best equiped place for a surgery and that they will pay so much more attention there because it is their job to teach others. He advised me to relax and that we will do it in September. Well I dont know…do it in September or the week after that? What’s yout advice?
What a rude woman, she is. Sorry to hear that. But seeing she is so unprofessional, it is really good to have the surgery done at the vet school when all the students are there.
In case, you decide to get the surgery done the week after next week, maybe you could get in contact with some of the students to help you with any questions regarding post-surgery??
I think I would go for the appointment the week after, and if something really should happen post-surgery, which it most likely won’t, then you will either have to go to her or see another vet. Post-surgery problems could probably be dealt with by any vet, and not just her.
What about that place where you are going for the summer? Are there any vets there?
You mean my village? There is one who has a good reputation here when it comes to dogs and cats and I believe he could probably help in a situation like that…
I will think about when I to do it and ask my father which is more comfortable to him but I believe it will be September. I’ll ask him again in a couple of days so that he will be a bit relaxed by the whole thing.
I’m so sorry you had a bad experience with her. I was really hoping that the vet school would be the answer to this problem.
Just for your information, I edited out the vet’s name from your initial post. According to the forum rules, negative reviews of vet’s and vet offices are not allowed.
From the Rules:
H. Negative Reviews/Comments of Pet Stores, Vet Hospitals, Individual Vets and other individuals: So, you saw horrible conditions at a pet store, your vet was terrible, and you had to deal with the rudest receptionist. Those things are monumentally frustrating! We understand, but for your own legal protection keep actual names of individuals and businesses out of your posts. According to the Communications Decency Act, you, the individual poster in an online forum, is legally responsible for your statements, and so if a company or individual wants to pursue a lawsuit against you, they can track you down (IF a court orders it) by your IP address (even if it changes).
I’m leaning toward having you arrange to have it done at the school as soon as they can do it, so they have a day or two post-surgically to be open, and then get in touch with the good dog/cat vet to line them up as a back up in case of emergency. Have you interviewed any other vet besides this woman? This has been so stressful for you for so long that I’d really like to see you get it behind you. If the school can do it and you won’t have to wait until September, you will have time to meet other vets, who are scarce, I know.
I agree with Pam. I would still do it as soon as possible at the vet school. You’re only going to worry if you continue to put it off. Her bedside manner is awful, but honestly that doesn’t mean she’s a bad vet.
Oh I didnt know about that Beka, sorry! It’s just that in the greek forums we usually mention names.
Anyway I want to do it as soon as possible too and not wait till September. And if something happens post spay we will be in my village having that dog and cat vet just a minute away from home. He has experience in cats spays and neuters so I believe he will be able to help in such a case. Oh at the vet school she said that she isnt the one performing the spays but other vets and anesthesiologists of the school but she is usually supervising most of the time and helps if something happens.
I think that sounds okay then. She really doesn’t seem to have a great personality, but at the end of the day, you don’t have to be her best friend or invite her to your wedding… you’re going to her for a service. That’s it.
Don’t worry about posting the vet name. I took care of it and now you know. If we ever do want to share info like that between members, we can do it through private email. ;o)
September it is. I wont postpone it further more than september.
I just cannot ask my dad to do it now cause he is generally furious and annoyed by the whole thing and I dont want to bug him any more. He will never understand why I want to spay a bunny and he has said many times that he would never even think about that but at least he agreed to do it in September. Now I just want to let him not to think about it any more during the summer.
I am making a promise to myself that it will happen in September no matter what within the first 3 weeks the vet school is open again.
If you book the appointment, mark the calendar, and let him know the date, you won’t have to think about it again until the day before. It will be a relief to have a date reserved and you can look forward to the day AFTER when it’s all over.
I would schedule it with the school now, so there is no problem booking it later on.
I cant schedule it now because you first have to go there for a check up and arrange the appointment in person. I am planning though to arrange the check up the week the school opens again..
Ive notice (I live in a small town with a very good vet school) that some vets don’t have the best ‘bedside manners’. It is probably why they went to vet school rather than med school, some aren’t the best with interacting with people. They are however amazing with animals, so try not to take it personally (I know that can be hard!).
Don’t hate me for posting again on this thread… I want you to answer what you think is the best choice:
1)Spay at the vet school where there where bunnies lost at every stage of the procedure (the anesthesiologists said that).
2)Spay at the vet’s private office where she hasn’t lost any but is not supportive of spaying and points out the risks. Idk how many spays she has done.
3)Dont spay because I dont have great options and live with the consequences.
Keep in mind that here in Greece spaying is not common and these are really my only options for the spay.
I am just thinking to spay at the office without letting my parents know (I’ll find a way).
I will just not handle it if she dies on the table and lately I am crying my eyes out for this matter… I am not that strong…
Forgive me for the re-thinking, I ask you not to be too judgemental because I dont have the choice of vets that you in the USA have. If I was in a place where I had to choose from a list of rabbit savvy vets I would have done the spay already but unfortunately that is not the case here.
If it’s the same vet doing the procedure, I don’t think the location really matters, the rabbits chances are the same either way. It is the knowledge and skill of the vet doing the surgery that counts.
I’d say at the vet school, if its the same vet as the private office.
Option 3 is NOT an option.
What a tough decision for you, very stressing for sure
When I went in for my own surgeries the Dr.’s had to tell me all the real bad stuff that ‘could’ happen. There are always posibilities of things going wrong with everything in life, specially surgeries. I got an infection from one surgery, that was the worst that ever happend to me.
So far all my own animals that have been spayed/neutered, had tumor or cancer removed, had large abcesses cleaned out and many other ickies have all healed up just fine.
If this Vet has done the procedure sucessfully before i would have faith in her, even if she’s sorta a cow. One of the best animal surgons I know is a real butt head, i hate the guy, BUT he does the cleanest spay I have ever seen. We have a Ultrasound Tech I had to use recently, and they guy has as much people skills as a porcupine. Some of these guys i think work with animals b/c they can’t people LOL no one can stand them.
Make a list of the pro’s and cons, such as if she is spayed she can live a much longer life with you then if she isn’t. Understand there are risks, and if anything happens you should always know you made the right decision for her well being. If she was to get uterin cancer, which we all know is far to common, it would involve a much more difficult spay by then, which may cost more money as well.
Good luck, and whatever you decide you have my support.
Wow, you do have a tough decision. I kind of think I would go with number 2 because you do have that option. If you didn’t then you only have option 3. You don’t have to love the vet, but you do have to trust that she knows what she is doing and it sounds like she knows what she’s doing. Vets have an obligation to point out any risks for the procedures they do – you just have to reassure yourself that the benefits outweigh the risks.
This vet is not the one who does the spays at the vet school…she will only help if needed. Others do it and she sometimes observe or help if something comes up but I think that losing bunnies at every stage of the procedure rings a bell. Are they really to be trusted?
Now at her office…The fact that she is not in favour of spays and that she says it is dangerous makes me worry. But on the other hand she hasnt lost a bunny. But the thing is idk how many spays she has done and I’m guessing they are not many as greek people dont know how important it is and just dont even think about doing it. Neuters must be more by far I am sure of that.
I am leaning towards number 2 but still…it scares the hell out of me. I am having nightmares and I have a sick stomach on a daily basis….
Just get it done, the sooner the better for both of your sakes.
Then you can stop worrying!
I feel for you. In the US we truly are lucky that we have many good vets for rabbits – it’s not like that probably anywhere else in the world.
I do advocate spaying but just as you, I would want to know that my rabbit is in competent hands. Do you know how many rabbit spays that vet has done?
I dont know how many spays she has done but I know she has done a lot of neuters as she is more easy going when it comes to neuters; after all they are easier and safer than spays. I cant understand why she is reluctant on the spays. I know that she doesnt believe the research on uterine cancer.. And she hasnt lost any, then why does she say how risky it is? She probably hasnt done many but I think this is just because greek people have no idea about spaying. Ugh I am tired.
Honestly guys would you still do it if you were me? Would you spay there if you had no other options? I mean I am thinking that I prefer to give her 3-4 years of life than terminate it so soon……
I can tell you are agonizing over this. I know I would be as well if I were in your shoes. I think if I was agonizing like this and felt this unsure of the vet, I honestly would have to say I might not have this done either. It’s very easy for any of us to say you should go ahead and do it because it’s not our rabbit and we aren’t in the same situation with a vet as you are. If you decide not to, we definitely aren’t going to demonize you. I want to feel confident about the vet I’m having do anything with my rabbit, a spay or anything else.
I would still inquire about how many spay the vet has done, and how many bunnies she’s lost during spay. I also feel the way Sarita does. Even with the cancer risk, if I did not have access to a rabbit-savvy vet, then I would most likely not have the spay done. (and that is difficult for me to say!)
But I understand you are dealing with a special circumstances.
