        There are a million toys out for Bones when she is out and about. Toys,playhouses,diggy box etc…. But all she wants to do it chew on carpet!! I thought about laying down some carpet square that I dont care if she chews on but that would be encouraging the behavior right??  Anyone else have carpet chewers? How do you distract them?? I feel like Tonks gets more time out because she does not destroy anything!!!  Any ideas??

          Have you tried covering up the carpet with cardboard or something else she can chew? This works better if she’s interested in one particular area, of course since you can’t cover your whole house with cardboard.

              Seriously, I agree with E. — put cardboard in the spot of carpet where she likes to chew. Usually, they pick a certain spot. Or, you can put a piece of furniture there or anything really. This will detract her hopefully. Let us know.

                Phonebooks last longer than cardboard IMHO, and they’re harder to move out of the way (;

                Let us know.

                  you could put a ceramic tile on the chewing spot.

                    I did have one bunny, Forrest, that chewed on two particular areas especially. (He inspired much of the tips in the Bunny Proofing Page!). One area he chewed on was on the outside of the bedroom door which he wasn’t allowed in unless I was there — his goal was to dig and chew a hole to get to the other side when the door was closed. I ended up putting sheet vinyl there in the door way, but you can find clear plastic runner type stuff and I would do that instead if I had to do it over again as it’s better looking.

                    The other place he chewed on “seemed” random, but we were renting an apartment at the time that allowed pets, and so there could have been an old pet scent there that he was trying to eliminate by chewing it out. I did use phonebooks quite a bit while he was out and that helped. But if you think it could be an old scent thing that’s inspiring this you could just try a deep clean.

                    Jack though picked up where Forrest left off and even with the squirt bottle and “No’s”, Jack learned to be more sneaky. It did deter him though and he knew he wasn’t supposed to do it — and he did chew less, but if you just want to make things easy on yourself and not have to keep an eye on him every single second then that may not be the way to go.

                    If the other chew distractions don’t work, then maybe while he’s out you could do the same thing as I suggested above — put the clear plastic runner over that spot. Not the prettiest solution I know.

                    This is, of course, assuming she has particular places to chew. Otherwise, I have to say, phonebooks have always been all of my bunny’s favorites.

                      We used to have flattened double-thick cardboard boxes in the corners of our living room. Put an end table on top, and there’s no way the bunny is moving it. Not the most attractive solution, but when Meadow was at peak “destructive bunny” stage… it worked wonders.

                      You can see how the corner is caged in.  The couches are recliners, so we had to have grids to prevent her from going behind.  The piece of flat cardboard was a safe spot to chew and dig without encouraging the carpet habit.  And once a week, the end table could be pulled out the cardboard swept free of fur.

                            Bee dug a huge hole in the carpet under my bed, I placed a folding table over it which they ended up really liking since the surface is slick and cool. Now when I see her thinking about digging elsewhere I just lay down cardboard or an extra large grass mat that I get here on BB.

                              I adopted my first bun with the assurance that he was non-destructive.. his foster family kept him in a spare bedroom and said they didn’t have problems with him destroying things at all. I know the rescue well and totally believe them.. they seemed quite sad to see him go, so I definitely don’t think they were just trying to get rid of him. But oh man, he’s a maaajor carpet chewer. For the first few months, I had to squirt him probably fifty times a day to stop the chewing. I tried phone books, cardboard boxes, willow baskets, sisal toys.. nope. He wanted nothing to do with them. Now he rarely chews but every once in awhile I come home to a big hole that wasn’t there when I left. I’ve covered his favorite spots with rugs, which he doesn’t mess with, but I’ve given up worrying about it. The holes are definitely an eyesore, but I rent and therefore will be paying to replace the carpet, so I kind of gave up. I think covering the favorite spots is a good strategy though.. they seem to fixate on certain spots. Having lots and lots of hay available also seems to keep him occupied, but he’s very food obsessed.

                                Cover the carpet you like, and give them other stuff I think it depends on how your bunny does it-like is it one spot they run to and ‘work on’ or is it wherever they lie down they nibble.

                                You could cover the carpet with hard plastic and put a phone book there Totally works. I find mine like to stetch right out and casully…ruin…your…house or stretch out and chew…so I just give them phone books, cardboard etc. Be careful becasue once they get thorugh the floor of cardboard box, they will continue on to the carpet, then the floor board, then strait through to china!
