› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Continuing litterbox issues with Mimzy
So I’m still struggling with Mimzy’s new annoying habit of throwing his litterbox for most of the day and all of the night, even though it’s been over a month now that the new dog’s been in the house and even if MImzy was bugged by the new arrival, he should, I would think, be kind of over it by now? He has completely territorial pooed his cage by morning EVERY morning and now leaves wet spots where he drags his litterbox from…I am almost ready to just remove the thing from his pen and pile litter there, just to keep him from throwing the box and making noise (usually when I’m trying to sleep, which is maddening), but with how he digs at the floor of his pen now I don’t think it would make a difference, plus I don’t want him to get in the habit of just going wherever.
I know I should have made it so the boxes can be fastened to the side of the pen, but that means major destruction to it’s sides and I don’t want flyballs starting to come through the walls at me, plus it won’t stop him from yanking the thing around and I can’t imagine that would be good for his jaw/teeth.
I got some fastening boxes some time ago, but sadly they are too big to go through the door of his pen, fatal miscalculation on my part. They’ll work great in the xpen when I get it together again, but for now they are collecting dust.
I pulled him out for some cuddle time today. He mostly just tooled around on the bed, or dug in the litterbox. I was hoping I could see him actually pee in it, as I know he messes them up but wanted to watch his behavior to see if he was having trouble, but he didn’t pee at all…just dug and tossed litter everywhere.
I groomed him, his tailfeathers are still sloughing off from his shed (his ‘bald spot’ is all gone, btw…YAY!) and they seemed wet. So he had to have peed, but not enough for me to see it in the box.
Checked his bum as best I could since he WOULD NOT be turned over or tranced and all seems clean under there. ![]()
He eats well. Wouldn’t take treats from me on the bed though (this is where the dogglefox spends most of her time now) and hardly went to see Fiver at all, which he normally loves to do. I think Fiver felt snubbed.![]()
He seems just the slightest bit ‘off’…but as to whether that is illness or depression or just plain bunneh anger, I can’t say.
I am sad to say I am completely frustrated with him, although I can imagine he is moreso with me and I can’t blame him. But I am not sure what to do at this point. I suppose a vet visit is in order, just to be sure he is not ill, but I have to say if that comes back a negative, I am stymied as to how to get my lovable little fluffball back.
He did enjoy just the snuggles after I finished grooming. It was almost like old times. ![]()
My poor bun. I must have made him feel so unloved, bringing that silly goggie into the house. ![]()
Any other sugggestions as to how to find out exactly what his problem is would be greatly appreciated! Oh, and he’s getting lovely salads twice a day now and fresh greens from the yard…so he’s far from being ignored…maybe the new feed is part of it and he’s just got spring fever?![]()
Thanks!
Forgot to add, his rear end did have a scent to it that I can’t describe…usually he leaves no scent at all. I’d almost say it was fruity, but I must be imagining things…let’s just say there was a smell where usually there is none.
Hopefully not an infection in progress…but I can’t say it was an unpleasant smell, just noticeable.
Is he doing it to entertain himself MM? The digging in the box on the bed sounds like it. An activity for him. What’s the weather like there now? I’m thinking you could give him some time outdoors to stimulate activity and hopefully leave him more zonked at night time.
You’ve mentioned considering bonding again too. Bonding sessions would certainly keep him occupied. (btw, I vote you try Pip & him together 1st to see where they’re at. ;o) )
I think there is something in your spring fever theory. I notice times when my rabbits get more active.
The fruity smell is a bit mysterious. Maybe the urine in his fur?
Yeah I was thinking that too…but…bunny pee doesn’t smell fruity when it’s in the litterbox, so I thought I might be hallucinating. o_o
We’ve got almost 24 hour daylight right now and the weather has been rainy except for a few days of sun. I can’t keep the light out of the room completely, so that could be it too.
If Jenna didn’t take up so much of my time, maybe I could get them all outside for a stretch. >.<
Mimzy is also all boogery again. I still think he may actually be allergic to the dog. Which would just completely ruin my day. ![]()
Do you have to spend time with the dog in the same room as the bunnies? If not, I’d keep separate areas for them.
If that’s not possible, what about getting a throw blanket or sheet that you put over the bed, let the bunnies play on, then pick it up before the new dog goes on it. It can be their out time blanket, so it only smells like them and covers up the dog smell a bit.
Otherwise, it’s a vet trip. I doubt he’s allergic to the dog because his nose trouble goes back long before you got her.
I use puppy pads and a blanket that is Mimzy’s very own personal fleece for the bed any time he is on it (and the other bunnies do well with this kind of arrangement too) and I noticed he dug at it more than he usually does. So perhaps he was just trying to investigate the other ‘scent’ on the blankets below? Perhaps I should just let him do this, so he doesn’t feel I am ‘hiding’ something from him…that way maybe he can relax.
And his troubles first started way back when we had the other two dogs in the house over that particularly bad winter…now they didn’t room with me, but the house is tiny enough I am sure their dander wafted throughout. Jenna really doesn’t have the dander that the other dogs did, but she is much closer in proximity.
Jerz suggested maybe the gentimicin that Jenna is taking might help Mimzy’s nose issues, as we are all discussing yeast infections of bunny and dog ears in another thread…I don’t think the doc checked for that. Could yeast cause the sniffles and sneezing? It is kind of humid this summer and my bunny room is unbearably stuffy. I was hoping my son would be helping me clear out the house by now so we can look at other locations for bonding sessions and a larger xpen setup for all three to enjoy together instead of that miserable little hole they live in now.
Today was not so bad. Despite my son keeping me up till almost 5 this morning (the bunnies all hate this…they like their quiet nights) and not getting the lights off till about 4, Mimzy did seem to do a little better this morning with the box tossing. However, I was so dead tired, I missed early morning cleanup and he has messed the pen pretty badly. But at least he took heed when I snapped my fingers at his first few tosses and then seemed to resign himself to wait for me to get up. He was quiet when I did so I made sure to give him some extra nose rubs and let him know he did well.
So I’m wondering if it’s a quality time thing. I have been awfully busy for the last few months and not much time to really spend with all three bunnies.
It could also be that, since the sun is up almost the minute it seems to go down now, that he believes I am more than just an hour or so late with his breakfast, which is a big no-no of course. I am certain he has many complaints about me at present and if only he could talk maybe I wouldn’t have to be over-analyzing everything whenever he starts a behavior problem.
Jenna, sadly, has completely imprinted on me instead of my daughter. I could not even leave her with my son yesterday while I popped down to our local store for some provisions for 20 minutes without her convincing him she needed to go outside (thinking she had to potty, he obliged) and then led him down the road to the end of the driveway where she inspected every vehicle going by for my presence. When I returned, although he’d been very good to her, she was a shaking, miserable mess.
I am trying to get her used to spending at least bunny cleaning and snuggling time in her travel pen (this is one of those large airline carrier types, but just the all metal so she can still see me when I walk by) but otherwise it’s kind of hard to keep her from following me wherever I go.
I’m just worried about the urinating that Mimzy is doing outside his box. I will probably take him in to the vet just to be sure that’s not an infection of some sort. No point in vacillating on that. He needs a nail trim anyway.
Of course, goggie will have to come along because I can’t leave her home without her becoming hysterical. He’s not going to like that I’ll wager. >.< At least my boy will be able to keep her in the car while bun and I see the doc.
Funny, you’d think it would be Fiver who has the problem with all this. He is the one closest to where the dog is and she’s taken up much of his “Whee!” time too. But the two have been nose to nose a few times and neither shows any animosity. (not just taking that for granted though, she is never unsupervised with any other pet in the house-I had originally never meant for her to be anywhere near the bunnies) In fact, Fiver tried to bring her his funny ball at one point in an obvious desire to play, which I found shocking. He ran my cat off when Griff tried to play with his toys! 0_o
(Speaking of Fiver…OT alert…we tried some baby food butternut squash last night. Although he first took a sniff and looked at me like, “Mum…dis not punkinz…”, he finally finished it all off! I was so happy, thanks for the tip, Pam!)
Silly goggie… you isn’t gonna disappear in a few minutes! And I totally forgot to post that I couldn’t find pumpkin at my usual store
Sorry MM!
Aw thanks, MB!
I appreciate you looking for it for me.
Yup…looks like Fiver is becoming a Gerber baby. ^_^
Well, at least baby food will be around for awhile! hehe
Today was not so bad. Despite my son keeping me up till almost 5 this morning
haha…were you gaming?
Jerz suggested maybe the gentimicin that Jenna is taking might help Mimzy’s nose issues, as we are all discussing yeast infections of bunny and dog ears in another thread…I don’t think the doc checked for that. Could yeast cause the sniffles and sneezing?
Mimz, just wanted to clarify here. I wasn’t thinking yeast with Mimzy….more so the use of that antibiotic which is supposed to work better against some of the more stubborn or resistant bacteria. I don’t know if I’ve heard of yeast infection in nasal passages before… Something to quiz your vet about I guess.
I didn’t realise before that Mimzy was peeing outside his box also. If that keeps up you do want to get him checked out. By the way, I mopped up a pee puddle last night and it smelled like white wine! Fruity. lol I don’t know if that sprung to mind because you has mentioned this. Oh dear – this is what happens when you get 2 virgos discussing health issues!
I may have found the problem…you’re not going to believe it and I’m keeping my fingers crossed….
I stopped using the new smaller boxes I just bought him and brought back his old, chewed up, larger ones.
Not a bit of mess anywhere in the pen today. 0_o
‘Course goggie wasn’t in the room as much today…but still. Here’s hoping. He seems calmer all around too. Weird. 0_o;
And yes…my son has not only got me playing Pokemon till all hours, but Guitar Hero as well. Booyah. ^_^
What a Diva! Mimzy wants what Mimzy wants!
lol@ the gaming. Good to hear you’re having some fun though.
Well I think we can call this case closed. It’s been a few days now with the old boxes and besides his normal stray poos…not one pee spot and lots less box tossing…..
Needless to say…reclaiming all his old boxes from the recycle pile…since they don’t seem to make these anymore, I can’t afford to get rid of them now.
Weird bun. *shakes head*
Good that you solved it, and “Gerber Baby” LOL. (Two Virgos? Hide the PDR!)
What kind of boxes are they? Is this something I can find here and have shipped to you?
Pix please.
Well I have 5 that I rotate out. So far he hasn’t been AS destructive with these as the ones I got for Fiver and Pip, which have barely enough freeboard to keep the litter in. The only one of Mimzy’s I am concerned with is one that wasn’t properly cleaned before tossing it outside, but I think a good soak in some Tilex and a long rinse will resurrect it.
I think we’re good for now. Thank you though.
And pardon my ignorance but..what’s PDR? 0_o lolz
(I’ve actually had to add probiotics to the squash to get the desired effect…but it’s all slurped up by morning still so it’s all good!
Hubby found ‘punkinz’ in California, so he’s having a bunch shipped up here. We may just make it to September now.
)
PDR – the bible for doctors and Virgos. It is the Physicians Desk Reference. It’s about the size of the Complete Works of William Shakespeare in hardcover. Maybe a little fatter. It’s a list of all diseases and drugs I think, or something equally fun for some light reading. ![]()
My mom has one of those.. lol
Yeah, I had something like that as a kid. A Reader’s Digest version. (ALL our books came from there!) I was thinking I had everything from pink eye to brain tumors for reading it. But it did spark my love for all things medical. Nowadays the closest I’d get to a nursing career is to watch House religiously. ~_~
He got a little more uppity with his box this morning, but that’s because I didn’t haul my rear out of bed on time. xD
