› Forum › THE LOUNGE › FIFA 2010 fever anyone?
since canada’s team didn’t make it to the world cup this time round i’m cheering for… drum rolll please…
germany!!! woohoo!!! viel glück deutschland!
and after sunday’s game we’re off to a great start
it’s FIFA fever in the office here. aside from me we have people cheering for honduras, portugal and england. anyone else caught the fever? who’s your fav team? fav player? (ladies… there are some verrrry fine young men to see incase you haven’t been watching yet)
Oh hubby and I have been soooooo excited about the world cup! I wish soccer was more popular in the States! Go USA and Germany! He was watching the USA game this weekend while I was on the computer not paying attention at the moment, they scored, he screamed! He scared that crap out of me…and the bunnies for that matter!
German soccer is world-class! I am at the edge of my seat every time they play!
Bbm, you are love-sick…
It is so exciting to watch! There is always something going on! I love it!

*hides head, muttering* Oh the shame, the shame!
Well, I haven’t been watching the actual games due to times but I’ve certainly been hearing of the aftermath. The moaning, the crying, the sulking…..
awww… sorry jerseygirl! see… this is why i am not competitive. i feel bad for the loosing team! i’m sure there’s a deep psychological meaning to this that will require I have sessions with a shrink at some point. lol.
I want a final between Germany and Brazil.
Woohoo! I’vee been watching as much as I can. I love the World Cup. I’m of course cheering for USA, but I’m also cheering for Hondouras as my half-brother is Hondouran.
I just love the fever of the World Cup. The US isn’t really as into it as other countries, which makes me sad, but I try to pay attention because it’s such an amazing international event!
i agree totally… amazing international event! i’m enjoying it as much as olympics. i like googling countries i haven’t heard of (never to late to learn to be interested in geography ) and i love seeing how happy players and fans are when they score.
petzy… i’m with you… germany / brazil final! i called it at work today pretending i know what i’m talkin bout
germany lost…booo
lol
now usa has a shot at slovenia. down by one but the game is young!
Did you see Greece yesterday? Best game! such a surprise! I think that second goal was my favorite highlight so far.
uh… babybuns… I hate to bring it up… but by any chance, does that guy you liked care for soccer??
um… ya. so what’s your point?
hahaha
actually i caught the fever from the remaining male colleagues. one is quite the enthusiastic world cup aficionado!
then that’s such a great hook, you know, to strike a conversation with him but it’s too late, is it?
ya it’s too late. he’s not working here anymore. and he’s going to the stag & doe with the ‘significant other’ he apparently has had all along but kept on the down low.
grrrr….. I hope she hates soccer. And that he comes back working in the same place to tell you all about… but that’s just fantasy!
We actually had some World Cup Games in Dallas in 1994…I had no idea what this was all about until then.
My work is next too a few sports bars and we’ve been hearing cheers and boo’s during the games – especially today’s USA/Slovenia game.
Also during the France/Mexico game – we have lots of Mexico fans here too.
I used to work in a national league soccer (well, it’s called football here!) club until a few years ago. My job was to interview the players before and after the game, write articles and well do general marketing work towards the sponsors…but as soon as I quit the job, I left behind soccer for good. It was only fun when I had access to the players haha
My boyfriend is into the FIFA and apparently I keep talking whenever there is something important going on, so he misses out on most of it – so he claims. Not my fault that I have something important to tell every time somebody scores??
That sounds like a fun job Karla! I have a cousin who is a sports writer for the Pittsburgh Tribune Review.
It WAS a fun job. The whole intensity leading up to the matches, working with famous players that my friends dreamed about meeting et.c., and the whole crazy informal atmosphere in a work environment like that. But I worked overtime 6 days a week without compensation, and if you are not into football, then it is hard to work under those conditions never seeing friends or family. To all my co-workers, it was an honour to work in the leading club, but well…to me it was merely an unusual job. But I met my boyfriend there, and I have great memories from that period of my life, so I’m excited to have been a part of it.
Now I will only watch football if David Beckham is out on the field
Argentina played real strong today. Their coach, Diego Maradona, has vowed to run through the streets of Buenos Aires without clothes on if they win the world cup… not sure if that’s an incentive or a threat.
LOL, sounds interesting.
I think the FIFA is quite entertaining this year. There are the Frenches that are refusing to train, and the North Korean players who may or may not have diseappeared…so weird. The action is definitely not on the field, but all the things that are going on outside!
How can the FIFA thread slip into oblivion? It’s only getting exciting now!
Who loved the shootout between Japan and Paraguay? I could hardly watch it! Babybuns, where are you? Brazil and Germany are still around!
I saw the shootout… I saw every game between Friday night and Tuesday night. HJ and his roommate had nothing but soccer on TV all weekend.
I came home threatening to blow a vuvuzela in the ear of anyone who turned on soccer.
well, it’s only once every four years.. maybe you can suffer through it.. LOL
I hope Germany does well! The games are getting so intense! Especially with all the “game technology” drama!
I can’t believe it, the Dutch beat Brazil….
I can’t believe Brazil got beat! The Ghana-Uruguay game got so intense! I can’t believe Ghana missed some of the pk’s that they did! They should not have missed those shots…
The Uruguayaan goalie is now my favorite after the shootout. That was amazing! He stopped two shots!
that was amazing! i was watching that shootout at the gym and everyone was rivited. tell me you saw germany and argentina… what a game.. wow! can`t believe brazil is gone.
The Germany Argentina game was awesome! Germany did so well! Just one goal after another!
I did see Germany and Argentina. The Germans showed them how it’s done.. I guess, the Argentine coach can keep his clothes on after all (probably better anyways)
— are you German-Canadian, babybuns, or why are you cheering for the Germans? I see you’re in Waterloo.
i’m all canadian but dad was born and raised in germany. i went to german school every saturday growing up and have been lucky enough to visit germany twice to meet my german relatives.
ya good thing bout the argentine coach not sprinting naked thru the streets
so you speak German?
wow…. who saw the end of the semifinal between netherlands and uruguay? i really thought they might tie it up at the literal last second! sooo close!!!
i can speak a little german but im really really rusty now. trying to do some more online reading in german to pick my vocab back up. its wierd… german sounds so soothing to my ear even tho it’s not my native language nor did i grow up hearing it at home. must be the german accent my dad had
An all European World Cup! I am glad the Netherlands won! I was holding my breath those last few seconds…”Come on ref blow the whistle already!!!”

Meine Familie is deutsch aber seitdem wir nach Kanada kamen als ich noch sehr jung war, spreche ich es nie. Schreiben faellt mir leicht — aber das Gesprochene bereitet mir viel Muehe. Mir fehlt die Uebung!
I guess, we are headed for an all-European final…
Auf Wiedersehen Team Deutschland
–Spain was on fire! Que sorpresa, the little Spaniards beat the Germans. I am now cheering for them!they played awsome!
I was disappointed that Germany lost. They just were too timid around the Spaniards. It was a great game though!
So it’s over. SPAIN WON!!!! WOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO! Me encanta! The Dutch got away with too much. I guess, they win for ‘most yellow cards received’?!
congrats to spain!!! that game was a great big sea of yellow cards. wow. i enjoyed the game for third place on sat… they were less anxious playing that game i imagine and so it was really exciting to watch. and of course i was glad that germany came in third overall
petzy i almost understood all of your german without a translator! where in germany is your family from originally?
