I have a very, very fiesty rabbit that has had to wear an e-collar for about 2 weeks. I’ve been cleaning the cone and wiping her paws as much as possible/she’ll let me. But, she still has mats on her feet from not being able to clean them. I’ve been trying to gently wipe with a wet cloth but don’t seem to be getting anywhere. Is there an easier, better, or quicker way? (She’s a fighter, especially in my attempts to put her on her back. Which the vet does and I never have attempted before now.)

She gets her stitches out on Monday (today is Saturday), but I hate to let her sit like this. Also, due to the extreme stress of putting the cone back on, I stopped taking it off after two days, hence the spot cleaning. This has just been the worst experience!

I have to say, you’ve done well leaving the collar on that long. Does she bother her stitches when it is off? Some things that might help is to trim the collar a bit shorter so she can get to her feet ok but not too the stitches. Also, you could try a belly band over the stitches (provided it doesn’t get too warm) and take the collar off. At this stage, if things have healed well you might want to ring the vet office and ask if it’s ok to leave the collar off now.

For the matts, you could try massage a drop of mineral oil into them and coax them out with a comb.

If you think you may not be able to get the mats out- you could always ask the vet clinic to shave them off when they remove her stitches.  She may be more docile there as she is out of her element.  It usually takes the hair quite awhile to grow back- but it is better than mats.  And clippers are much safer option than scissors!
