Our bunny sammy is 11 weeks old, we don’t know the sex yet as it is our first in addition to our 3 cats and we don’t know how to handle him/her. My daughter is in the habbit of throwing her dirty clothes outside the closet when the hamper is full. I noticed that sammy had licked 4 dirty pairs of under wear in the crotch area. I’m sure it’s not bad for his health, but anyone know why?

Huh. That iiis strange behavior. Probably… trying to figure out… what that scent is… to be as polite about it as possible.

But why isn’t particularly important, it is probably kind of embarrassing for her, especially if guests were to catch the rabbit in the act. Maybe advise her to do laundry more often, or stuff the excess in the closet where he can’t get to it.

Rabbits just do silly things like that. It’s a different scent and he/she is just curious. Rabbits will eat just about anything. My rabbits both lick me all of the time when I get in thier pen with them. I’m assuming it is the slight salt taste humans have on thier skin. My male rabbit is particularly interested in me right after I wash my hands. It’s just that type of soap he is interested in. I don’t know why. Certain scents and tastes just intrege (sp?) them lol. I would have to agree with Zombie-Sue, you should just make sure the bunny doesn’t have access to your daughters clothes. Warn your daughter that there is a very good chance she will find her clothing shredded. Rabbits are very well known for that!

            Is your bunny free roam?

The bunny was free to roam in living room and bedrooms until he chewed the wire to the sub woofer for my entertainment system…Now sammy is only allowed to roam in my bedroom where he started chewing the molding on the walls…sprayed them down with perfum and that took care of that. Tomorrow we are covering all the wires in the living room to give him access to that because that is where the cat’s litter box is that he learned how to use.

Rabbits are attracted to certain scents.

I have a female rabbit and she seems to enjoy giving kisses to my boyfriend more.

Definitaly bunny proof. It is needed. Have you tried NIC (I think that is what it is called) grids? Correct me if I am wrong.

I also would strongly advise that you get your bunny his/her own litter box with proper bunny safe litter. Cat litter isn’t good for buns.

I agree. It’s because of scent.

It sounds like in addition to bunny-proofing, there is some “daughter-training” needed… lol. Anything that is left on the floor is fair game for bunny teeth. This isn’t always an issue if you have dogs or cats in the house, but with bunnies, everything needs to be kept picked up, or the room needs to be off-limits.

And at 11 weeks old, he’s just starting.  Chances are he will become more destructive before his neuter (or spay?) and then things will slowly improve.

I agree with everything the others have said.

Also, do not let him use the cat litter box. Cats have bacteria in their poo that can be very dangerous for rabbits. He needs to have his own litter box with bunny safe litter and no cat poop in it.

^^^I didn’t read that meaning that the rabbit is using a litterbox that is also used by her cat. I read it as, he has a cat-size litterbox. (Like most of us have cat-size litterboxes). Can you clarify this Heavenly?

She said it was the “cat’s litterbox”, so I assumed the cat was using it as well. Please clarify for us, Heavenly 🙂

Oh! In that case, you definitely don’t want them using the same box. Get a separate litterbox for the rabbit and put it in the space he’s in. And really, at this age he should be in a pen of some sort. He’s too young for free range.

Hevenly, you should check out my thread called “Rabbit Damage!” Mine were free roam to one room only until they both chewed up my carpet. I would advise that you get an xpen to keep him in. They give enough room for your bunny to live comfortably yet they cannot ruin things. The cord covers you find at the pet store isn’t enough in my opinion.lol They can chew through that too and they will. I am like you and want my bunnies to be able to have a whole room to be free in but I learned the hard way that at that young of an age it is just not possible. Not to mention, it is very common that when bunnies hit puberty (between ages 3-6 months) they will lose thier litter box habbits. Mine were great with the litter box from the day I got them. There was never an accident….until they started to mature at the age of 4 months for my male and 3 months for my female. They poop everywhere in thier pens now and it is nasty skunky smelling marking poop. They will do this for a while even after they are spayed/neutered. Just some advice from someone who learned the hard way

I agree with Zombie-Sue, please don’t take any of this as an attack against you or us shoving our opinions at you. People on here care about the bunny owners as much as the bunnies. I have learned a lot from this site and I would have been totally lost without it! There is great advice here.

Licking underwear?? Maybe because of the smell? Who knows, bunnies are weird! Mine, who has never licked me, started licking a umbrela and whenever she passes next to it she stays to lick for a bit!lol

Yes. The bunny has his own litter box with bunny safe litter. But the cats have their own which he prefers using for some reason versus his own. He has 2 litter boxes 1 in his cage and one in another area. I switched the cats to the bunny litter and they dont seem to mind.

My dogs like to lick dirty underwear too…. If we leave a laundry basket in the kitchen our dogs will jump in and lick all the underwear…. One time our dogs ate a pair of my sisters….. she never found out

I have had cats who like to lick not only dirty underwear, but smelly shirt armpits. >.< (there isn't an EW! loud enough!) My hubby's former cat used to actually snuggle with him after a hard day's work and before a shower and just wash his pits for him and rub his face in them. :X

And think of how dogs greet one another. Stinky places are just a handshake for them! ^_^ And yes, maybe this will teach your daughter to pick up her clothes. Sounds like a win to me.

Just wanted to add that Eddie likes to sniff and sometime lick my dirty socks.  EWWWWW.  LOL   And when I’m taking a bath, he’ll sometimes wander in and sniff around my panties on the floor.   It’s weird, but normal at the same time.  They like to investigage “new” smells cause it might be food.

I think it’s important to move the cat boxes up so the bunny can’t be in there-they are just havens for bacteria. I had a friend hospitalized for two weeks from HER OWN cat scratching her. The bunny should not be around their poop. Move their box-they are smart and will use it. Bunny should have his own.
