So I finally worked up the courage to try trimming a few of Zeus’s nails.  I have handled his paws a few times to see what he’d do, and he hasn’t ever cared about it at all.  But nail trimming in general, on any species, makes me really nervous.  I just don’t wanna hurt the poor critter.

Anyways, I got 2 feet done!  Yeah!  Zeus totally didn’t care, his eyes were half-closed while I trimmed. However, once I got started, I realized I really have no clue how long his nails SHOULD be.  Luckily all four of his paws are white so I can see the quick, but all the fur on his toes makes it kinda hard to see.  I just trimmed off a teeeeensie bit, just because I was nervous and didn’t know what I was doing. .

I was actually wondering if anyone could do me a HUGE favor and take a picture of their bun’s foot where I can see how long their nails are?  I understand this would be kinda hard to photograph, but any attempts would be really REALLY helpful for this nervous first bun owner!

The nails are supposed to be a little longer than the quicks. You can’t go by a picture of another bunny. It would be too hard to tell. You should be able to see the quick easily if your bunny has light nails. If your bunny has darker nails, use a flashlight to shine through to see the quick. People are nervous about trimming nails because of the fear of cutting the quick. It would be painful for the bunny if that happened. Just look for them and cut a little past them. It would be good to have some syptic powder there just in case you trim too short.

My bunnies have fur similar to Zeus’, and I like to keep the nail trimmed short enough so that I can’t see them sticking out of the fur. As soon as they start poking out of the fur, it’s usually time for a trim. If his nails were long to start with, you may need to trim them more frequently to get the quick to recede. Since they’re white, you really can’t mess it up unless he starts to struggle.

That’s the kind of guideline I was hoping for, thanks!  Only a few of his back nails are poking out of his fur, none of the fronts were.

Isn’t Zues a large breed bunny? Am I getting him mixed up with another bunny or isn’t he like 1/2 New Zealand 1/2 Flemish? In that case I would go by where the quicks are at. Both of rabbits nails stick out past the fur because if I cut them that short I would cut into the quick.

I think it really helps to remember that if you cut the bunny’s quick, it isn’t the end of the world. Yes, it will hurt, but so did your first nick or splinter, and he will get over it (: I’ve never cut a rabbit’s nails before, but thinking that way REALLY HELPED ME when I used to have to cut my dog’s nails from time to time. Just take a deep breath and remember he will recover, even if you do mess up. If you don’t? great!

Try to go about an 8th of an inch beyond the quick, which you can see if he’s being that calm. (Lucky!)
Also, got advice from a rescue dvd: When you go to cut, do “press, press, clip”. You take two practice tries by pressing but not cutting, and if you hit the quick the bunny will yank his foot away. Then you’re too close.
Keep a little bowl of corn starch handy too, if you don’t have styptic powder. It goes on the cut if you make him bleed and will stop it and soothe.

You can also cut less off at a sitting, but do it more frequently. If he stays calm, that’s much easier than those of us who are treated like Vlad the Impailer whenever we get out the clippers.

Nibbles, Zeus is a mini lop. I have a holland and a mini and I can keep both of theirs trimmed to just below the fur line on their paws without getting close to the quick at all.

Yup!  Ya beat me to it.  He’s not THAT big, albeit he’s waaaay bigger than I was led onto when talking to the previous owner.

Yeah, I am seriously spoiled with having Zeus as my first bun.  He’s been so easy about EVERYTHING!  Litterbox trained in 2 days, and apparently he doesn’t care about his nail trimmings either. .

I definitely think I will do the frequent small trimmings, just while we’re hanging out do one paw one night, another paw the next night, etc.

Chacha’s nails are done monthly. I know it is time when she jumps on me and tries to jump onto the couch and it hurts when she jumps off of me

Hahaha, keep up the good litter habits. He isn’t neutered, is he?  My bun was also litter trained fairly quickly. She maintained her habits, but would pee in tiny spots before she got spayed. Now shes quite good with her litter habits

Don’t worry, I spoil my bun too. People say I spoil her too much. Hey, it keeps teh bunny outta trouble, doesn’t it?

Since he’s that good about getting the trims, I would suggest doing two feet and two feet, rather than one at a time. Kind of a walking, balance thing. He may as well feel comfortable afterwards.

If you have him on your lap, put him down after trimming one or two paws. Pet him on your lap to calm him down. Chacha tends to calm down more and I always tell her “Good girl!! Almost done!” And she handles it pretty well.

He actually doesn’t like to be held, I think he was never really picked up much at all in the past.  The second you act like you’re going to lift him off of the floor in any way, he panics.

But I pretty much did what you said, only on the ground with me sitting next to him, rather than in my lap.  He got pets between each nail, and didn’t even really seem to notice what I was doing, as long as he got pets.
