Hello!
I is planning to make Poppy free range. I am going to gradually build her up to it and I is very confident, so this isn’t really advice thread. Eventually Poppy will have free range of my bedroom. I was wondering who else has free range bun? Can I see photo of your set up?
I do has one question…I is confident to litter train, but is it true all buns will drop pills no matter what you do?
Not all bunnies poop everywhere. Neither of mine ever leave poos outside of their litter box. Sometimes a few stick to their feet when they jump out of the box, so I find a few near the litter box, but they never leave any out and about when they’re playing.
It’s possible to have her free range, but you have to work up to it very, very slowly… In my opinion, rabbits should not be free range until they are spay/neutered and (usually) at least 12-18 months old. Young/teenager bunnies are very messy and destructive, so if you make her free range too soon, you’ll get frustrated and she won’t learn what is her space and what is yours. Mine are free during the day, but at night and when we’re not home for an extended length of time, they have a large 4×8 foot exercise pen.
My set up is exactly the same as Beka’s. Since I’m unemployed, they are allowed out the whole day and I’ll let them stay out if I run errands for a few hours. Since they sleep all day, I know they’re not running around getting into trouble. If I have to go out for the evening, I lock them up because this is the troublemaking time. They’re also locked up at night.
However I think there’s a difference between free range in just one room vs free range in a house. A bunny can be free range in one room fairly easily – just take some time to bunny proof and have a well litter trained rabbit. The only reason I worry about bedrooms is that I wouldn’t want my bunny up on the bed destroying my sheets while I’m gone. But it’s still fairly easy, since the room becomes like one big cage.
Free range in a house is much more difficult. There are so many more things to get into, so many more things to bunny proof. I think it takes much longer to get comfortable allowing your bun to free range in a house, which is why Beka and I lock them up at night.
Lucy is free-range in her own room all the time. And then free-range through the whole house (minus bedrooms and bathrooms) in the evening when I get home from work until I go to sleep. Then she goes back to her room.
She almost never poops outside of her room anymore. Only every once in a while if she is startled. That did take some time though. We were picking up random poops every where for about the first month.
But I should say…I don’t really have a real “house” – it’s just a one story townhouse. So by “whole house”…I really just mean living room / dining room / kitchen / one hallway. So bunny-proofing wasn’t that difficult. Plus I can pretty much see (or hear) her from where ever I am. I can imagine it would be harder with stairs and all.
My only free ranger is Pepe. He’s about 6 years old. He can go anywhere but the rabbit room where I have my other rabbits – he used to come downstairs but won’t do that any longer – he stopped when I got my area rug – I think he didn’t like the dye smell.
It wasn’t my intention to let him free roam but he has an aggressive nature and has had some medical issues so it just happened and he’s very good. Occasionally there are stray poops – no big deal and sometimes after his dental he has a bit of poopy butt but these we can manage with – he NEVER pee’s anywhere but his litter box.
I agree with Beka, spayed and neutered and at least one year old or older.
That the plan people, I’ve done my research! Working up very slowly. Good to hear about the poops, I am getting Poppy de sex and she won’t be free range in my room all in one go. Very very slow.
So do your bunny enjoy being free range?
P.S. She will be in cage at bed time or when I am out even when fully trained.
She LOVES it. For two reasons
1. She likes to explore. I think her happiest time was the first month home when EVERYTHING was new and interesting
2. She’s a runner. She sprints around the house with a huge amount of energy. Being free-range allows her to do that.
Okay, that’s good, thanks!
Mine are free range…and they choose to stay in the one room mostly. A couple times a day, I will see them hop out into the hall and look around….and maybe once a month they will hop into my daughters room in the morning if it doesn’t look like the adults are getting up Fast enough to feed them.
Coco is pretty good with her poops – I do notice they have favorite spots that the will drop in, but I assume that is a “This is my special spot” kind of thing. I just sweep everything up and pop it back into the litter box. I should add too that Both my husband and I are Work from Home folks. The rabbits have near constant supervision from Someone who is home.
I don’t see Binkies like when I would let her out of the cage in the morning – But I figure that is a trade off. They get lots of exercise and chase each other about.
Coco used to love to be on my bed…Until Jackson came into her life. Now she could care less. I sometimes miss her little fuzzy kisses, but I know that she loves her Jackson, so I am content to no longer be her Number 1.
I would wait until she is spayed
ChaCha had sprayed on the carpet (thank you pet friendly stain remover, PHEW) before her spay, but afterward, she would use the bathroom like normal.
ChaCha has the entire living room to herself for 2-3 hours a day when I am at home. It is much longer when I have no work. Otherwise, she has her kennel – and I clipped her playpen to the kennel to around an area she can run around and have a large amount of room to stretch her legs ![]()
I don’t see any poops on the carpet LOL. I would observe your bunny and see how she reacts to her environment and see what you will need. I definitely suggest a baby gate or few, some grids and zip ties.
Watch her on the furniture and definitaly get cord protectors. Put things away that you dont want chewed up!

That’s a good plan. You want your bunny to be used to being caged at times so that if she ever had to be, say for travel, boarding or at the vet’s, it wouldn’t unduly stress her.
My rabbit is free range also. I adopted him from a shelter and he is about 3 years old. He only hangs out in the living room I think because it is carpeted and the rest of the place is tile. The living room is completely rabbit – proofed so he can’t get into TOO much trouble. He has only made one mistake outside of his litter box but has never done it again. My rabbit likes to explore and so having him free range is ideal for him. I don’t think all rabbits have the capability to be free range, but it works for our house and everyone is happy!
OH! I forgot to put that Hatter (my rabbit) does have a cage he can go into, or if there is an emergency and I have to put him into it…..other than that I leave the door to the cage open. He likes to hang out under the TV table
Thanks you for sharing your experience HatterBunny!
Lily has been a free range bunn since the day I braught him home, he was about 4months old, til he reached maturity then he had a cage of wire grids from cubes around his cage til after his neuter. 3 days after the neuter he was free once again! Expect a few poo’s & pee mess when they find new territory, LOL! ex chairs couches beds etc! Here are a few pics
Lily with the grids around the cage preneuter
Lily’s new set up! we removed the top of the cage and have a litter box in the corner of the cage & have a coved litter box right beside the cage and right behind Boo’s(the cat) is a basket for Lily!
Lily on the back of a chair & behind there is a phone book for Lily to dig & chew & tear apart! HEHE!
My boys are totally free range and we don’t really have set up per se…Their litter boxes are set up on a little rug and their water bowl is close to that. Their hay is in their boxes and they gets their other foods on a grass mat under the end table, where they like to hang out. The living room looks a little bit like bunny play land with boxes…toys and their tunnel littered through out. They also periodically tear up their phone book so pages of that are usually strewn around! Haha. My advice is just to make sure cords are unavailable, and to wipe down any base boards with perfume. They tend to stay out of trouble for the most part! ![]()
Sugarbear is free range. He has the run of the house. He has a cage with his food and litterbox. The door is open on it and he knows where to find what he needs. We started with his cage surrounded by a pen and gradually let him have more of the house. He is very good at finding what was not bunny proofed and keeping us on our toes not to leave things around on the floor.
.
at night he likes to be near us. He will follow us around for attention.
He has boxes with hay spread around the house and we will ” accidentally” leave kale and carrot greens around the house tp keep him hunting for treats.
Hi sorry if this is late
My rabbit binky is completely free range, he only poops in his cage, he used to poop EVERYWHERE now its just in his cage since I got him fixed and my other rabbit died (I guess he is not competing for teritory ?)
Anyhow sorry thats not much help, but I suggest just having litter boxes everywhere till he finds out where he likes to go, but to be honest I didnt use any trying he just toilet trained himself (poops) once the other bunny was gone and he was fixed.
Pepper originally had a condo in my kitchen but she declared herself free-range a few weeks after coming to live with me by simply leaping the barrier I had up in the kitchen doorway. I kept the condo as her place for food and litterbox, but eventually she started spending most of her free time in her little “fort” under the papasan chair. I thought “if she’s not using it, then I want my kitchen back!”. I kept the foood/water/litterbox stations righer where they used to be and she never had any issues.
When I bought my condo i didn’t even bother to set up a condo – her hay rack and litterbox are under the kitchen wire-rack shelves. She sleeps under my bed (often hopping up for a good round to face-pettings at bedtime) and spends the day either there or under the couch where the increasingly-shredded phone book lives. Sometimes I’ll make up a cardboard box “castle” for her – at least until she destroys it.
When I’m home, unless she’s taking a nap or solking for some reason (like grooming or nailtrims) she usually hangs out in whatever room I’m in, either under the furniture or playing “fuzzy-speed-bump” in the middle of the floor.
mine are kinda free range, they have almost all of my room but cause of where i live they dont have complete freedom. but once i move they will get more room….espeially since atticus is going to get quite lagre and i already made their area bigger cause i felt it was getting too small for atticus!
