ok, June 11th Luna IS getting spayed and Atticus is getting neutered…if they can get both of his dangles. if not, he will have to go back when he is older….the reason i am posting this now is…..i am VERY nervous for them. this is the first time ill be taking rabbits to get fixed and the vet they are going to is an hour away.

        Here comes the questions:

-they are very much bonded, do i take them in the same carrier or seperate?

-do i bring pellets or hay for the time they have to stay at the vets before i can pick them up?

-picking them up, again together or seperate?

-they are currently together in their area, when they come home should i seperate them?

-once home, should they be in their cages instead of free range like they are now?

-and if in their cages, do i leave them in there or let them have supervised time out?

-if allowed out, should it be seperate or together?

-for their litter i have yesterdays news and shavings that i mix in the box, should i just use one or the other or continue to mix it?

-do i have to put anything on the incision?

OMG guys, i dont know if i can do this!!!

But, on a more positive note, Moose is starting to show improvment and should be allowed to lave the vet in a week or so if she comntinues to do well.

          So many questions

they are very much bonded, do i take them in the same carrier or seperate?

Yes bring them in the same carrier if you can. That way they can comfort each other.

do i bring pellets or hay for the time they have to stay at the vets before i can pick them up?

I would say, you should bring it along, but the vet may not neccessarily use it. Often, they have their own stuff which they want to use. But bring it with you just in case.

picking them up, again together or seperate?

          Together.

they are currently together in their area, when they come home should i seperate them?

Are you bringing them home straight after the neuter? In that case, I would seperate them. Sometimes, they panic quite a bit once they begin to wake up from the anestethics; they cannot move properly and they will fall all over each other. Also, they pee on themselves, because they cannot sit correctly, and it is not nice for them to have each other’s pee all over them, I think. Once, they wake up after a few hours and are doing fine, I would let them be together again.

once home, should they be in their cages instead of free range like they are now?

In their cages while they wake up. But you will see.

and if in their cages, do i leave them in there or let them have supervised time out?

Are we talking about once they are fine after the surgery? It depends on how they are doing. Karl was let out on supervised time a few hours after the surgey and then put back in his cage for night time. The following day he was free range again. Molly was kept in her cage for 3-4 days, but she was in pain and not feeling well.

if allowed out, should it be seperate or together?

Together, as long as they seem fine.

do i have to put anything on the incision?

          Nope. Leave it.

OMG guys, i dont know if i can do this!!!

Yes, you can! They will be back in no time.

          >But, on a more positive note, Moose is starting to show improvment and should be allowed to lave the vet in a week or so if she comntinues to do well.

          Yeah! Healing vibes.

I agree with what Karla said. I also bring a bag of pellets/goodies for my buns , but my vet also had treats for them to get eating as well.

My baby is getting her spay on June 9th, but I am leaving her boyfriend at home- but since you are having both of yours done together, of course keep them together.

You can do it, I was scared too and I even cried when I handed over Indy (he was my first neutered bun) and was a wreck all day; and of course know one understood why I was such a train wreck! It’s for the best – the first day will be tough on you to see them groggy and/or recovering but remember you will make them so much happier and your home will be happier as well.

Things will be fine. Boys tend to bounce back much quicker… so don’t be surprised if Atticus seems better and Luna is still sluggish at the 24 hour mark… Make sure you have pain meds for Luna. Atticus may not necessarily need them, but Luna definitely will.

i would get the meds from the vet right? they are going into the vet at 9 am and i am to pick them up 330-630 the same day!

ugh, i am already stressed right out. getting dogs and cats fixed i am good and even when my puppy at 5 months old tore out all his stitches and by the time the 24hr mark he had mad his 1 1/2″ in 4″. that was bad but we kept him clean and on oral antibiotics and he had to wear a full muzzel for 72 hours so he would leave the gaping hole alone but he healed sooo well, he barley has a scar left from that.

Yeah. Find out if they are an extra charge or if they are included in the price. If the vet is an hour away, DO NOT LEAVE WITHOUT THEM, b/c you’ll end up having to drive back a day later when the surgery meds wear off. Some vets will say they’re not necessary. They are. Insist on them.

How did you bond a unaltered male and female that are old enough for spay/neuter?

Katnip asks a good question… if the male is 3 months right now, what are they still doing together? Or are they apart right now, but you’re wanting to transport them together that day?

I know how you are feeling, I went through it recently with my girls. Our vet kept them together until they were spayed. After that they were separated, but kept in cages next to one another (that shared one wall). Izzy bounced back fine, but Bella did not. I know females have a harder time bouncing back than males like Beka said. I am not saying this to alarm you because I am sure Luna will be fine, but we had to syringe feed Bella for 2 days after her surgery. So you may want to ask for a syringe just in case. I am sure your two will do great though!

Ours came home with pain meds that were included in the price.

atticus will be 11 weeks on june 11, so not quite 3 months and if they can neuter him then i have to take him back. they have been recently seperated and luna will be 4 months june 11.

If they are separated now, they may not be bonded come the big day. You may have to take them in separate carriers, and keep them apart and rebond after they are all healed up.

they are seperated at nite but i let them out together during the evening when i got home from work for a FULL SUPERVISED 1-2 hours. I then put one away and leave the other out for a few hours after and then switch so they stay bonded. they seem to be find with set up, i have been doing it for only 2 days soo far.

I do not know that I would consider rabbits that young to be truly bonded- they would eventually get to the pointed where they were “mated” if they were not spayed/neutered. But 2 intact adult rabbits or 2 adult rabbits are not truly bonded in the true sense of the meaning behind it for house bunnies. If hormones are playing any type of role- it is more like a mated pair- and if they are young it is more of a co-existance even though they seem to get along fine.
You should separate them and keep them separated. Even supervised a bunny can get pregnant- and that will make the spay trickier as the uterus will enlarged and have a larger blood supply running to it.
It sounds like you are on the right track to getting your bunnies to get along and bond after spaying and neutering- but you really do not want to rush it. If one has an aggressive moment brought on by hormones (and that certainly happens) the other bunny will remember being attacked and hurt- so you could damage the relationship they have now.
