Zeus gets 1/3cup of pellets per day, split into 3 feedings.  He INHALES his pellets, and eats them all in probably under a minute.  Does this mean he is not getting enough?  I know the general guideline is they should finish the pellets in 20 minutes, but what if they eat them in under ONE minute?

I’d say he really really likes his pellets

Does he eat lots of hay?  That is really the most important thing for him.  Pellets are mostly for trace elements/vitamins and to give them something crunchy to help with their teeth.  Hay should be the biggest part of their diet.

It sounds to me like you are feeding a reasonable ration of pellets.  I feed pellets sparingly because one of my bunnies is prone to gaining weight, but I feed 1/4 of a cup of pellets, once a day, for 3 rabbits.  What you are feeding certainly seems like enough.

Yes, I’d say it’s enough. It’s probably just because you are splitting it up into three separate feedings that it seems he is eating it faster. If you were to serve it all at once he probably wouldn’t finish it all in that time. My bunnies love their pellets and prefer them over hay, so I always moderate. Just remember that pellets are like candy to them and they will eat as much as they can get!

Yes he gets plenty of greens, and ad lib hay.  He doesn’t really eat a TON of hay though.  Maybe a handful a day?  He seems to prefer filling up on greens.

                  Thanks for the input guys!

It may have something to do with his background too? Maybe he didn’t get fed at a regular time, so he feels like as soon as he gets food he has to eat it right away?

Actually he had ad lib pellets before I got him.

It sounds like a good amount for him. My guess is that you’re spreading it out into small feedings that he can easily finish, so he inhales them. Both of my buns go for pellets first, but will eat less than 1/8cup before moving on to veggies. But they sure inhale that initial amount! If you gave him the pellets all at once, I bet he would spread them out longer.

Yeah that’s true.  I feed him 3 times a day because I figured that would more closely mimmick a “natural”, grazing diet.

Lucy would eat about a pound of pellets all at once if I let her.

We don’t feed her very many (maybe a small handful a day…just as treats and training motivation), but when I do give them to her she DESTROYS them. Plus she can fit a bunch of them in her mouth at once, so if she gets access to them she takes a giant mouthfull and then runs away to eat them. Like a gerbil. It’s pretty cute.

My bunny eats almost 70 grams a day and she is always begging for more. She goes in front of the bowl where I serve the pellets and waits while looking at me..Now I’m switching to adult pellets and I’m going to reduce the amount…is that okay? i mean she will be getting less than now so there is going to be a lot of begging. Is she always hungry or what? She gets a LOT of hay every day.

Oh and because she is a dwarf my vet said that she should be getting one romaine lettuce leaf and a piece of carrot. I’ve been giving her that the last couple of weeks. But it seems to me that it’s a really small amount. What do you give your dwarfs?

I give my bunny her pellets first when I wake up in the morning, and extra hay for her because she tends to finish her pellets near dinner time. I get home from work at 9:30 pm and I wash and give her veggies and extra hay.
