        Hello All,

It’s been ages since I posted, but one of my fosters has come down with a watery eye.  There is no discharge from his nose, but he was sneezing about a week ago.  The vet can’t find anything wrong with him.  He says it sounds like an allergy and he is shedding a lot.  He’s on Baytril which seems to be helping a little.  He still binkies for his pellets in the morning and eating and drinking like a  horse.  He hates taking the meds though.  He’s pissed off at me right now.  I’m reaching out to my binky bunny friends as to any suggestions as to what could be wrong?  I’m worred. Thanks.

Did the vet check his teeth?

Yes, he did. He said they are the best teeth on a bunny he’s ever seen. They are worn even.

I had a rabbit whose roots from his incisors grew long which caused him to have teary eyes.

The only other way to really know would be to do a culture and sensitivity test if the baytril does not work. It can take a few weeks too for the baytril to work – how long have you been giving him this?

He’s been on Baytril since Saturday. He takes 3cc’s a day, so I guess I have to wait and see what happens. This is my first time having a sick bunny so as you can guess, I’m very concerned.

Yes, give it some time to work. It’s good he’s still eating, drinking and doing binkys!

My Monkey girl had watery eyes.. when I took her to the vet, they did some test on her eyes, where they put flourescent eye drops in. Turns out she had an ulcer in each eye. 2 weeks for each eye with eye drops every 6 hours healed it up nicely. Might want the vet to check her eyes too. I’m super paranoid about her eyes now, silly rabbit.

Thanks Monkeybun! I will make that suggestion to the vet. The vet wants to wait and see if the Baytril works. I plan on taking Tyler back to the vet next week. My concern was if it’s contagious. I have my bonded pair living in an x-pen next toTyler. I don’t need them to get sick too! The vet doesn’t think it’s contagious.

If there is an improvement on Baytril and that is an antibiotic that leads to one of 2 conclusions 1) coincidence that the bunny is getting better OR 2) that it is indead a bacterial infection and responding to the antibiotic- as Baytril would have NO effect on allergies.

The vet couldn’t find anything wrong but he didn’t want to rule out an infection which is why he’s on the Baytril. So far, his eye is still a little wet, so I can’t tell what’s going on. He’s a rescue bunny, so the rescue didn’t want to run any unnecessary tests. But I’m watching him closely to make sure no new symptoms develop. The vet says to call him immediately and bring him in if it gets worse.

I have a Degu with a blocked tear duct gland that causes a watery eye. Becuase of his small size nothing can be done about it.
PitStop one of my rescue fosters has constant runy eyes and nose, this we believe developed from living in such bad conditions, and pasturella. He’s on antibiotics now b/c it became quite bad, including the discharge being coloured. But this is something he will be living with forever, adn most of the time it’s just a little bit of a weepy eye.

                              Goodluck with the recovery

UPDATE – The eye is getting better; almost completely dry. I discontinued the Baytril to see what happens. He was only on it for 2 days, so I doubt it helped at all. Will keep everyone posted. Thanks for your suggestions!

Well, I would not discontinue the baytril after 2 days and continue to take it as prescribed by the vet.
