So I have discovered Zeus is much more sensitive to the heat than I am.  I can be in temps up to about 90F without the AC on and be okay.  Zeus however seems to prefer the AC on when it’s 80F or above.

It’s going to be above 80 for awhile here, and I hate to leave the AC on that long, but at least I can turn it off at night.  I think since he doesn’t have SUPER short hair, and the fact that he’s a lop, means that he just gets warm easily.  He used to live outside before I got him, I can’t imagine him being outside right now.  The heat index yesterday was 97F.

So I was just curious when you guys all have to turn the AC on for your buns!

I have my AC turned on now – alot of it is because it’s just so humid where I live. I can’t stand it myself! My upstairs is at 78 degrees where my rabbits are and it seems to be just fine. Of course we are in the 90’s here now where I live.

Yeah it’s really humid here too, hence the heat index being so much higher than the actual temps.

We have had our AC on and off since the beginning of April. My husband HATES to be hot in any way, shape, or form… so I ended up wearing sweatpants and sweaters thru out the summer. It’s never an issue w/ our buns being too hot. ;o)

80 degrees is the *magic number* with bunnies. You want it no hotter than 80 for them to be comfortable.

We’re 100 miles south of Sarita and I’ve had it on for the last couple of weeks because of the high humidity. I have a small window unit in their room so I can keep it cooler than the rest of the house, about 75 degrees. Saturday it was only 79 degrees but the humidity was 89% and it was miserable outside.

Right now I have the AC set on 75.  I may set it on 80 and see if he’s okay with that.  I just hate using all that electricity, and I miss fresh air!

You can probably get away with 78 or 80 degrees. I wish I could have the fresh air as well! I totally prefer that.

Cripes, even in Montreal we are sweltering – But then again, we are serious babies in any kind of over 75 degree weather.

I have had the fan on for them the past two days. I also got the frozen water bottles out for them to lay next to…and unveiled the frozen pineapple chunks for licking/chewing.

They have both been stretched out in front of the fan. We don’t have AC here – it is never hot enough for it for more than a week a year, so we suffer!

I’m in Southern Indiana and it is close to 90* here. I can handle the heat. I just can’t stand it when it’s humid! We don’t have central air and only one window unit. I bought a little $6 fan at Walmart and I use frozen water bottles. I put the fan on the outside of the pen (of course) and the frozen water bottle inside the pen in front of the fan. It works great! It gives a nice cool breeze. My bunnies like to lay in front of it and they like to lick on the water bottle too. I also wet thier ears sometimes. Baxter loves that. If I get them too wet he will groom hiself until they are dry. lol. This weekend I am going to pick up a couple of ceramic tiles for them to lay on. Thier peel n stick tiles stay pretty cool though too.

When we’re out I set the a/c to about 78 so that it kicks on at 80 degrees, but when we’re home I turn it down to 75. DH and I don’t like the heat anymore than the bunnies, so we’re happy to turn on the air sooner rather than later.

Neither my husband or I like the house being hot- so we have the air on whenever it is hot- or going to be hot.  We have a saltwater fish tank that has a chiller to keep the water cool- but it is more efficient to run the central air and keep the whole house cool and keep the water chiller use to a minimum.

You can give your bunnies tiles to lay on- I have some granite tiles for my bunnies.  And you can freeze a 20 oz bottle of water and your bunny can lay by that to keep cool.  And you could have a fan just for the bunny.

Bunnies can overheat quickly- I had Cotton outside once to groom her- and I had her on the lower deck which is stone- and not the upper deck which is wood- and the heat radiating from the stone made her hot.  I brought her in and used cool water on her ears-  “washing” them with a damp washcloth.  She let me do that for about a minute- and then she jumped up and was back to her old self again ready for mischief.  I was with her and I was warm too- but I noticed she was breathing heavier than normal so I brought her back in the AC right away.

I usually don’t put the a/c on until well into June. Keep in mind I live in New Brunswick! I put the a/c on in the living room and the ceiling fan circulates it and cools down the rabbit room. On really hot days (30C+) I put a dark sheet over the rabbit room window to keep the sunlight out and that really helps cool off the room. It probably confuses them though to have the room dark during the day!

After 6 years in the Bay Area, I finally broke down and bought a small window unit for my bedroom. Although most of the year is perfectly fine temperature-wise, my apartment gets direct sun from morning to night and can climb into the 80s or 90s on a warm day. I say the AC is for Peter, but really, I’m going to be happy to have it once the first heat wave comes. : ) If anyone is looking for a good, cheap AC, I got it at Target for $99 last month.

I like to keep it at 75. I also give him a frozen cooler pack wrapped in a fleece blanket every day, because his house is by a sunny window. He seems to like the ice pack – sleeps next to it, grooms it, ect.

LOL I make sure it’s on every day on my way to work. Year round. I’m in South Florida.

Ironically (and I am NOT complaining) it has been cooler this year than in the past, and it’s in the 80s lately. I don’t like it when it’s in the 90’s, but I’ve noticed that it doesn’t fluctuate to the very hot temps here as much as some of your areas of the country(countries). I don’t miss New England cold, and I couldn’t stand high 90s or higher either.

Sammy is very content between 70 and 78.

I turned on when the temp. was 65.

I don’t want to risk my rabbit and guinea pigs to have heat stokes or whatever it called.

65F?  I don’t think you have to worry about heat stroke at 65F..

If the living room thermostat in our house reads above 75, I turn on the AC. If it’s below 80 outside, I can usually keep the house to 70 by putting a fan in the window, since the sun never shines on the back of our house. It’s when we’re going out for the day that I get nervous, so I set the AC at 69-70 degrees then. I have a hamster that shouldn’t be in temperatures much below 65, so I walk a fine line here- lol. My fuzzy lop, Nelli, is much more sensitive to the heat than my shorthaired BunBun.

I don’t get to choose when air conditioning is available, but I don’t like things much above 70 so I keep it on as long as I can. The constant sun easily brings my apartment up to 80 without air, and that’s when the bunnies get the fan and ice cubes in their bowl. When it topped 90 indoors a few months ago (!), we fled to my parents’ house. I think it’s impressive that you can stand such heat!

I would worry about temps above 80 for my buns just because I’ve hard the dangers of heatstroke, but I think they’ll also tell you if they’re too hot. Mine get all pathetic and floppy and I know I need to help them.
