It is a good idea, in fact the best idea if you want your rabbit to go back to using the potty, living a longer life, and calms her attitude down.

I was very scared, but if you find a vet that has never lost a rabbit during a spay procedure, you are in good hands. My vet has never lost a bunny during surgery and that made me feel assured that my bunny was in good hands.

Also, rabbits can get cancer if they are not spayed. The % is VERY VERY high if left unspayed.

Have you looked up any good vets online? I recommend getting her spayed asap!!

If you have a vet that knnows rabbits the risk is lessened. That said, surgery is a risk for all animals and for us too. It’s easy to get nervous about but after you feel like it was a non-event. At least I did anyway.
The risk for uterine cancer however cannot be lessened unless a Doe is spayed. The risk is 80% chance of developing uterine cancer.
By having a rabbit desexed, you cut out this risk, extend their life, relieve them of their frustration and reduce problem behaviours.

You mentioned in your intro thread that you are in Australia. If you are happy to post which State you are in, I (and others) may be able to direct you to a rabbit vet you can ask your questions and allay your fears.

I don’t mind…but you might! I had my Doe spayed for $180. I’ve since found out it’s one of the best prices here and my vet is good with doing the procedure so I really lucked out. I didn’t know all that beforehand. A member here used to be in the ACT. She doesn’t post much these days but I’ll get in touch with her to see if she has any recommendations. I know she saw a vet who pretty much saved her rabbits life – they were really supportive too.

Edit to add: fabulous girl already got back to me! She recommends Gungahlin Small Animals Hospital.  Check your messages as I’ve given more detail there.

jerseygirl has pretty much covered everything…. if you can find somewhere affordable (we all know what that’s like >.<) I say definately do it.

Bun will be fine! I know it’s such a worry, Missus Suki was spayed about 3 weeks ago now, I was in such a panic, especially after the surgery, but in all honesty that’s a GOOD thing, means I didn’t take my eyes off her so I know her routine and what she was up to (eating, drinking, any changes) so I could act on them asap. The spay here (U.K) cost £60 …. I have NO idea what that relates to without looking on a converion site….. okay just looked and that’s converted to $104 AUD. $400 is a lot!!

Spaying is a necessary part of having a female rabbit. I would continue to look around for vets in your area too, or maybe if there is one that is less expensive, even if you have to drive a bit out of your way. It is worth it to get it done.

It is expensive. My quote is $354-$404. It is absolutly necessary! Females have a very high risk of developing uterine cancer in the first 1-3 years of thier life. If you are worried she won’t make it, you must have read or heard of others not making it?? If a rabbit doesn’t make it through it is because there is an underlying problem with the rabbit. Does your vet do bloodwork before the surgery? That is how you can make sure your rabbit is very healthy before going under. Some vets charge a lot for bloodwork and will tell you that is recommended but not required. Our Vet only charges $39.00 for blood work. Some people choose not to have bloodwork done. I have even heard some say that it does more harm than good. I have no idea why that is. My Rabbit did just fine.

Boy do I know how you feel about your rabbit changing! I am going through the same thing with my male, Baxter! I can’t get him neutered soon enough! You want to get your bunny spayed so she will live a long happy healthy life! Good luck with finding a good vet and the most affordable price for you.
