I have been noticing these last few days that Lemony’s usually long whiskers look like someone has chopped them off.  My fiance and I would never do this, and he hasn’t been out of our care since his neuter in April.  I’ve never heard of bunnies shedding whiskers along with their winter coats, but I just want to make sure.  Has anyone else encountered this?

I don’t know about shedding, but I know Otto’s whiskers will break off. I’ll see one that looks like it’s kind of bent, then a day or so later it’ll have fallen off where the break was.

Almost all of them look broken… I haven’t seen him rubbing his face against anything, and we bunny proofed the radiators. One or two I could understand, but all of them?

Is he shedding in general? Or has he shed lately? I imagine they must shed them at some time – he may have started growing in shorter ones then shed all of the longer ones all at once.

Also, he has rexy fur, right? Usually rexes have very short whiskers. It could be possible that he’s developing the rexy whiskers with age. Do they look curly or kinky at all? I could be totally off with that guess though.

bunnies do shed their whiskers- but not usually all at one.  And they shed them from the base of the whisker.  The whiskers usually have a very pointy sharp needle-like tip.  mI have stepped on dog and cat whiskers before and had to pull them out of my foot..

I wonder if it his Rex heritage kicking in.

Ah! Thank you for the help – I didn’t know that rexes usually have short whiskers. I thought it was the other way around. Hence my concern.   I knew BB could help!

Rexes tend to have very thin and very short, curly whiskers. Sometimes they look almost non-existent. Altho, one time, Meadow had one very long whisker that curled up and was poking her in the eye. I was wondering why her eye looked watery all day, and then she kept blinking at me. When I looked closer I saw the whisker was in her eye, so I trimmed it back a little.

I’ve noticed this with Baxter too! His whiskers were a light color and they are coming back black.

Rex whiskers was my first guess, too. They can get very kinky curly, and seem quite few and far between. The most obvious difference between Samantha and Spockie was her non-rex, loooooonnnnnngggggggg white whiskers. It’s such a difference!

On second thought, keep an eye on his little face area. Watch for any redness, in case they fell out from a reason other than shedding. Just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the help! I will definitely keep my eye out for anything unusual. @Beka, Lemony also had a curly hair that was near his eye area… We did trim that one, but only a little bit.
