I was wondering if anyone is doing a rabbit sitting exchange in the East Bay. I have a mini Rex who gets full access to the common areas of the house and I’m really hesitant to board him with a service that would keep him in a cage. I’ll board him if needed, but it would be nice to coordinate rabbit sitting schedules with someone in the area who’s in a similar situation.

I just hired my first pet sitter for this weekend-most of the services I contacted to screen did board in their homes/facilities-but MOST would and usually do sit in your home. So try checking for pet sitting services in your area and see how they work-you’d likely be able to find one that comes to your home to look after them just as they are. I agree-would not want to (and wouldn’t) board my bunny somewhere-a new place can be stressful-best to try to find a service that comes to the house for you

I do but only with people I’ve known for awhile. Sorry. However, if you don’t find anyone, there are a couple of places that are good boarding places — The House Rabbit Society Headquarters in Richmond (I’ve housed mine there many years ago) and SaveABunny.org (in the Marin).

I can understand that you don’t want to cage your rabbit, however, I would not want to leave my rabbits with someone I just met recently over the internet. Someone interested in such an exchange as you suggest would have a free-range rabbit themselves and there is a risk with keeping two uncaged unbonded rabbits in the same house. If they hopped their gates a serious fight could occur. I recommend to you to consider Kokaneeandkahlua’s in-home petsitting service, or making a condo for your bunny. You could fashion it in a shape that disassembles and reassembles easily so you can take it to a boarding place. This condo would also be something for your rabbit to feel secure and familiar in. It could be a good thing. you would not have to keep him in there all the time, he could be a free-ranger but with condo access.

Thank you for the advice guys. I hadn’t considered the personality disputes. My bunny is so easy going with me, I forget that he might not be so great around another bunny. I actually got my rabbit from Save a Bunny, but it’s quite a drive. I’ll look into Richmond.
                Thanks again.

Another option might be to see if there is someone at your vet clinic that is interested in petsitting.  They are not likely to be licensed and bonded as a petsitting business would be- but their experience with animals usually makes a responsible vet employee an ideal petsitter.  I work at a vet clinic and do some petsitting- mainly greyhounds these days.  But some of my younger co-workers that are not married find it easier to pet sit often.  And it depends on what you are looking for- someone to petsit at your house- coming 1-2 times a day or having your bunny at their house.  I am not sure how I would feel about petsitting another bunny in my house as it is just likely to upset my bunnies and the petsitting bunny- and it really would most likely be better to not expose your bunnies to other bunnies for no good reason.

I should also add- that when I go out of town and have a petsitter- my bunnies do not get any time out of their pen and they do fine. Even though it is my vet that petsits for me (and I for her)- I feel better knowing my bunnies are safe in their pens. But I make sure I have apple sticks and other chew toys available for them to help with boredom.
