So Pixie is using the litterbox for when she pees. I only picked up 2 accidents from pee in cage and that was yesterday. All day today she has been going in litterbox. She is pooping just a little in box but mostly in her cage especially near her food which I know they normally eat and poop at the same time. My question is I dont put her food in box right?? Or do I? Also what size litterbox do I get. Right now I just have the corner one that is suppose to be for a ferret.

I have an *enormous* litterbox and I put the food bowl and hay in it so that they eat and poop simultaneously! Works very well.

I like the cat boxes, they are much better in my opinion. corner boxes can be too small for a bun to be comfy in, and they quite often pee over the front edge. the rectangular cat boxes dont allow for any mishaps. PLUS if they dig in it, it wont make a huge mess.

You can put their bowl of food int eh corner of a cat box if they like eating int he potty, alot of people do. Definitely put hay in the box, my buns love eating hay and going potty at the same time lol.

Ok tomorrow I will get a cat box. I do have hay in the box now and she is going in there while eating hay but when she eats the pellets they go all over cage.

Yeah, those corner boxes are a waste. I think they cost 3 times as much as a cat box, and they’re so tiny! I’ve seen people put food in there, we always just did hay next to the littebox.

I had one bunny, Bailey, that would go whenever she ate anything. So I took a plastic dish, drilled holes in it, drilled holes in the side of the litterbox up toward the top edge, then I fastened the little plastic dish to the inside of the litter box with zipties. That way she couldn’t pee in it because it was up out of the way, but she could eat her pellets and some greens out of it. I  imagine that this may not work with some bunnies as they may scratch or box at the dish and the pellets then could go flying everywhere — but it worked for her.

Well, since she’s a baby I would not want to get her in this habit (only hay in the litterbox). Keep the pellet bowl separate from the litterbox. I imagine that the reason she is peeing/pooping outside the litterbox is a matter more of age and new place. You don’t want to start a habit if you can help it.

I read something recently that said the reason they poop while eating hay or grass is b/c, in the wild… the poop serves to fertilize the area where they eat, resulting in more food for them. We’ve always done hay in or near the litterbox, but with greens and pellets somewhere else. They know to poop in the litterboxes while they eat hay, but not to poop in their pellet/greens area. They really are quite smart.
