These are some older pictures, I don’t have any recent ones of our newer facility and set up, but for all you bunny lovers out there it may eb a bit fun to see so many bunnies living together happily.
I volunteer for SARSBC, They help any small animal in need (smaller then cats & dogs), most are kept in foster care but 70+ rabbits (this is about 40 of them in these pictures)
This was during a cleaning
Me kissing my boyfriend Mink lol
This is Puddin, she was like 16lbs LOL and thoght she was a doggy, shes in a forever home now,
Not all rabbits can live in this sorta of environment, and if they cannot they are houses sepretly most of the time in a foster home if one is available. We have found if you have a group of 14 or more rabits inroducing another is much easier, or just that many strangers at once. These pictures were all from our first set up, quite a few things have changed, and we have 2 pens with 30 or so bunnies in each, i’s really so relaxing to sit in such a happy little group and paing and grooming one another.
Wow. That’s amazing. How cool would that be to just sit down there with all the little ones! So how do you introduce a new bunny to them? I wouldn’t think that you just throw him in with them, do you? But then again, I don’t think a typical shelter would have the time or resources to go through a bonding process…. and when they get adopted, are they ok leaving the group? Do you require that people take at leat 2 so they can still have their bunny buddies?
wow thats kind of cool that they can all live together like that. I better not show it to my hubby, or he’ll say no more bunnies lol.
Introducing a new bunny in a group so large is pretty much drop them in and watch. It can sometimes take a little time for a bunny to adjust, but as long as there is no fighting and thing go smoothly, then they stay. If there is a ruckus and unhappy bunnies, then that bunny is removed. The bunnies will usually pick out a few friends they like to hang out with the most, if there are two that are inseparable, or came in together, they get adopted together. Most of these bunnies go to a home that already has a bunny, and that homes bunny picks out a new friend on a bunny date.
There is one bunny I know of who does not go well in a 1 bunny only home, and has actually been returned as she likes living in the colony, she’s a real bag LOL, and i love her.
Wow, these pics are great! It’s amazing how they can all live together like that. How do you keep track of all of them?!
I don’t think you even understand how much bliss I would be in to sit in the middle of all those bunnies.
Awww….look at them. What a beautiful group. I used to volunteer for a rescue that kept their rabbits this way but it was outside (which I did not approve of because it gets super hot in Texas). It is a totally different dynamic with a group this large than with two, three or four.
WOw, that is amazing!
wowowowowowowowo, I love that bowlful of bunnies in the first photo. That is just awesome how they all live together.
what type of bedding do you use? and what do they like to listen on the boombox? With the awful territorial pooping in have in the bunny room, this looks so clean, do most of them use the boxes? Can I move in with you?
Andi, thanks for posting this! I love the photo of the bunny bunch in the little kiddy pool. Now your group of eight seems so small by comparison!
Any chance you can video-tape the rabbit herd next time you go?
Wow that is so cool! I would love to sit in the middle of all those buns also – how wonderful it would be! I also am in love with Puddin. She is gorgeous! So happy she has a forever home.
I’m also curious about the cleaning! How often do you clean? How much work is it?
How do you keep track of all of them?! – I’m in the middle of still putting together the identification book we’ll be keeping at the shelter. Right now we go by Memory and what pen they are in.
I used to volunteer for a rescue that kept their rabbits this way but it was outside… – Our new facility is oen of those big sorta tarp buildings (quonset), we have heat lamps in there for the winter and fans for the summer. They are also insulating it and such. The building is fenced on the inside as well as the outter property, the guage is very small as we don’t want anything bigger then a mouse getting in.
oh wow I can’t even imagine what it would look like when you go in there with craisins lol. Take video of that if you can XD That looks like bunny heaven to me
That is amazing! It would be so fun to just sit and watch them all! Haha Dextervonbon, the craisin bag! I couldn’t even imagine!
You would have to wear heavy armor if you came with craisins.
OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG! HOW?!?!? My bunnies would kill each other. :0(
Andi I am getting on a plane right now with my buns and we’re moving in!
Guess i better clean the spare room up a bit LOL…
“Hi Hunny, I’m just having some internet rabbit loving friends and there bunnies stay for a while, that’s ok right?” :p
What are the dynamics in this herd like as far as mounting goes?
Minimal mounting, mostly new bunnies who are a bit dominant do that when they enter the group. There are little fusses happening once and a while, worst ‘bites’ we get are nose bites, but we’re never had any serious injuries. We’re find most of the rabbits who cannot live in this sorta situation are ones who are very affraid, they ‘freak out’ in the pen upsetting others, and some become ‘trolls’ hinding and protecting one area, i can think of a couple that have been removed for that reason. But other then that, it’s pretty much lounging bunnies just hanging out. When the new bedding goes in thats when you see a lot of binkies lol.
SaveABunny has begun to do a little experiment with large group penning. They currently have one set up that has 8 rabbits together. They are mostly from the Morland rescue project so they are already used to group situations and lots of other buns around. There’s another that has 5 that is working well too. We’re just running out of space.
Bigger the Groups the better, seems 14+ is a good amount to start out with, they are a little out of their element with so many at first, so there is less agruments among the bunnies :p
It is a bit more space, but less kennels/cages, less cleaning (at least indavidually), less food/water dishes (just larger ones), and it gives more space for the bunnies. I don’t know however if the bunnies adopted from a free run situation go back to having excellent litter habbits or not. hhmm… i’m going to ask one of the girls who adopted the grumpiest little female dwarf from us recently, Sophia. She was a favorite bunny of mine, we called her the troll.
WOW. How big is the last bunny? The little black and white one looks like my bun a bit. But my bun has the butterflies on his cheeks. We think he’s half Netherland Dwarf and half English Spot. So many buns!
Ok, so today I took a bit of video, and a couple pic’s when i went to the shelter, dunno how good they turned out LOL (now how to attatch a video?? lol)
Sorry if it’s kinda loud, there were some kids here wth their Mom, plaing with the bunnies and cleaning up.
Pen One, these guys are all pretty old, they are our ‘originals’.
Stomp your foot and u get everyones attention LOL, This is pen two.
And this is my favorite boy, his name is Buddy, but I call him the football LOL (dwarf/dutch guy)
awwwwwwwww, want, want, want ALL! I love the photo when you have all ears listening.
I remember you posting about your Jersey Wooly’s litter habits. Is he from this shelter? I woud imagine that the littering everywhere would stop once they are solitary. Rabbit herds have totally different litter dynamics.
No, he was an SPCA bunny adopted by a lady who gave him up and I took him.
I contacted an Adopter who adopted a bunny from our shelter and her little box habits are totally fine in teh new home (she lives ina group of 5 i think bunnies). I was curious to see if they would still have little box habits after being in this free run, and it seems they do
All the shelter bunnies I have had to take home for treatment have always used the litter box as well. I really didn’t think they would, so that surprised me.
It makes sense when you think about it. In herds of rabbits, there is more pressure for space and resources and a rabbit may instinctively mark more to prove his presence. In a rabbit warren not all rabbits use the same littering sites and some just litter as they go along suggesting a lower rank in the society.
