Do all buns resist the transition from alfalfa to timothy/orchard grass?

Lemony is getting to be that age where we have to start the switch over to timothy hay… Since I am allergic, it was suggested that we try orchard grass.  He hates it.  I am really worried that he’s not going to get his fiber in.

Have other people experienced this?  Any suggestions / other hays to try?

He’s usually not a picky eater, but he really loves his alfalfa hay.

There’s a big difference between timmy and orchard – just because he dislikes orchard doesn’t mean he’ll dislike timmy or other types of grass hay. I would just try some other ones until you find one he like better.

Are there any red lights that I should know about? Like, if one is extremely fattening, or one has too much calcium and shouldn’t be given everyday, etc.

I tried to change the topic heading, but I’m not sure if it worked.

No, all grass hays are nutritionally the same. It doesn’t matter which one you give him.

He’s probably being a dork about it, not wanting to give up his alfalfa. Keep offering it to him and keep lowering the alfalfa amounts, and he’ll learn to deal with the fact he wont have alfalfa forever

Yep, they can hold out with the “You’re STARVING me” eyes. Coco acted like the Hay was the devil and Jackson was suspicious.

Now, they both dance around like maniacs when I refresh the Hay. They can be total Toddlers when it comes to diet changes. I keep the Early Childhood rule of 7 in mind – a Child must see a food 7 times before he/she will even try it.

I find it’s best to make a ‘blend’ so the bunnies have to dig through and have no choice to eat all types. I give my bunnies at least three types of hay everyday. These blends consist of either timothy, brome, botanical, or alfalfa for Frankie. I find this allows for variety and encourages bunnies to try hays they usually wouldn’t eat. I do notice Sully has favourites like the brome hay, but he still eats the others. For weaning off alfalfa, I would mix the alfalfa in with the other hays really well. Also, I don’t know if you’ve tried botanical hay but my bunnies LOVE it and even if you sprinkle a little bit of it over the orchard grass it could help tempt your bunny instead of having to use alfalfa.

eta: Sully is really picky and only likes fresh hay, so maybe try refreshing it every day to entice him?

                        Ever heard of Meadow Grass?

I agree with Monkeybun – I’d mix it together too and then lower it out

Also, my buns love the oat and wheat hay sold here on BB. I offer it as a treat since I buy a bale of Tim and then offer the wheat/oat every so often just to spice things up. Bun literally jumped into the basket to eat it up.

I know what you mean though…Indy LOVES alfalfa but it made his pee kinda white and sticky so I can’t give it to him, but man did that get him eating after his neuter!

Samantha is crazy about the old, dryer Oat Hay and ignores the sweeter, softer Orchard Grass, so it may be a matter of taste. Get small bags of the different kinds, mix as suggested and wean off the alfalfa, then try to notice which type of hay is gone and which is left. The missing hay is the kind he likes.

Wear gloves when pulling the hay out for him, so you can take them off and wash your hands before touching your face and eyes. May help with the allergies.

It just so happends that I have an Oxbow catalog sitting right in front of me. lol
The only one that says it’s different nutritionally is the alfalfa. Which I am sure you knew that.lol
                              The others say this:
                              Timothy: Dietary Staple & High-Fiber
Orchard Grass: Soft & Sweet Flavor
                              Brome: Coarse & Earthy Flavor
                              Oat: Crunchy & Nutty Flavor
Botanical: Fragrant & Delicious (it is mixed with all kinds of herbs)
They all say they are high in fiber and low in protein. If you suffer from allergies maybe the botanical isn’t the one for you! lol
If your bunny like the rich alfalfa then you should mix it with another hay that has a more intense flavor.

Lemony is the exact same age as my bun – almost 6 months
I remember cos our bunnies were born the same day

Oh…could you pick up those construction filter masks too when you handle the hay? Those white filter ones? I have tons in the garage I could give you if you lived close You know what I’m talking about? Those would help you if you have to handle the timothy still.

You can mix in some grated carrot with the new hay to make a hay salad. It can help to get them eating a new kind of hay.
