Which do you prefer for your bun, and why? I need to replace Zeus’s water bottle today, but I was thinking maybe a dish would be better? Just trying to explore my options! ![]()
Offer both. Rabbits should know how to drink from a bottle, even though a bowl is more natural to them. Knowing how to use a bottle ensures that there is always water available to them, even if they are in a carrier at the vet’s, or on a trip, or if they spilled their bowl.

That’s interesting, I wouldn’t have thought of that. I know for sure my bun knows how to use both, as since his bottle his broken, I offered him a dish and he drank from it. ![]()
I have both in my cages but one. The one cage houses a pair that shed 24/7 and so their dish get’s fur in it to fast and i don’t want them drinking fur if i can help it.
I only offer a dish. I’ve had enough bad experiences with water bottles leaking that I just use a bowl now. I try to put it in a location where it’s unlikely to get stepped in or turned over and I don’t keep it near hay which can fall in and make a mess.

I was thinking of getting a dish that mounted to the side of the cage so it can’t be tipped over.
That’s a good idea, bunnnnnie. I think those are awesome. It can be tricky, depending on your cage set up, to keep a dish out of the way where it won’t be tipped over. And, of course, some bunnies try to tip them over on purpose, so the ones that attach are pretty much required.
I’ve had success putting the dish in a corner, usually with the litter box on one side and the back of the cage on another side. Then it’s out of the way enough that the bunnies aren’t going to run past it and crash into it, but I still get spills from time to time.
Water from a bottle is just always cleaner, like Andi posted: water in a bowl gets hair in it, plus, rabbits can get soggy dewlaps.

The only issues I have with water bottles is if they stop working (a dish basically can’t “stop working:

, and that a lot of times they drip. And since his entire cage isn’t bedded (I use a dog crate), I don’t want the floor getting all wet and slick. Perhaps I could just put a small dish under the water bottle to catch drips?
yes, that’s a good idea, catch the drips in a bowl.
I am always surprised to read about faulty bottles, I don’t have trouble with my bottles ever. They may leak two drops max after the buns just drank from them, but other than that, they work great. My favorite bottle so far is a glass one. It has the best spout part, very silent and clean. It cost the same as a plastic one and I can even buy spare parts for it. I think I have a video of it somewhere… will try to find it.
My bottle is identical to this one only a different brand.

The spout is shaped differently: it does not come out as straight, which I like because my rabbits can’t bump themselves on it.

What brand is it? I’ve always had issues with drippy water bottles, no matter what kind and style. I had guinea pigs for years before my new bun, so I’m very experienced in water bottles. ![]()
Here is my bunny Mops drinking from a glass bottle such as the SuperPet brand one. Mine is a Living World one (Hagen)
I find it very quiet.
Listen…
When I first hooked it up, it leaked like a sieve. I shook it and shook it and topped it off and blew the air out of the spout and eventually it stopped.
Now it never leaks.
That bottle is so quiet!
I think I’m going to go bottle AND small dish under the bottle route. They make some nice small dishes that are easily mounted for bird cages, actually. I can put his veggies and snacks in the little dish, or if his bottle stops working, fill the dish with water! ![]()
i tried a water bottle, then a dish, and then went back to the bottle.
my bunny kept getting water all over with a dish because she’d walk in it! its easier & cleaner to have the bottle.
I use a water bottle. I found it’s just less messy for me and Hatter. Plus, the water bottle can hold more water than the dish so I don’t have to worry about refilling more than once a day!
I have my water bottle with a dish under it in oen cage, as i think that one was a dripper. i have a BIG plastic one that is great, it’s sorta square and has a large mouth making for easy cleaning, it doesn’t leave, but just in case i have it over the litter box.
I have that same water bottle Petzy
I much prefer it to the plastic ones, and only drips after somebunny has had a drink from it. They do prefer the bowls though, I just have bottles as backups.
I ended up getting a water bottle and a dish. Thanks for the input folks! ![]()
