        Hey there,

I was just wondering, what are your opinions on which litter is best, in terms of odour?  For the time being, don’t worry about money constraints… I just want to hear opinions.

I clean out my litter every other day usually, but there some days I either forget or just don’t have time, and wondering what other stuff is out there… I’ve only used carefresh. My dad has super sense of smell, and he’s always complaining, so… yeah. (Especially now that the bunny with all the problems is super active when he’s in the living room, and he eats SO MUCH there, even nibbles at bits of hay, hay! But the litterbox is there too, since over the past year he’s become a little fearful and can’t navigate the house as well as he used to, so he’ll just pee without trying hard to find the litterbox elsewhere)

Or any tips to help control odour would help too!

I use carefresh as well, and don’t have to change their litter more than every few days. Your dad must have a real sensitive nose. Or he just likes to complain

I used to use aspen… now I am loyal to carefresh. I just scoop out the urine soaked litter and add a little into the box and its fine…

I don’t smell anything in the box and I don’t smell urine on my bunny’s butt anymore LOL

            its a win win!!

Another thing, is your bunny neutered? If not, that can be the odor cause. Un-neutered male buns are definitely more.. pungent.

I prefer woodstove pellets over paper litters. I feel they control odor better. I’ve never used the carefresh per se, but I have used recycled paper pellets and they just don’t do it for me. But then again, you’ll have a woody smell with WSP, so your dad may not like that either.

                  Yeah, they’re both neutered…

Maybe I’ll try the woodstove pellets… I’ve been meaning to for a while. I assume it wouldn’t bug my dad as he’s a woodsman, so if the wood smell bothers him…!

The wood stove pellets do keep the odor down more than paper-based litters. Another thing you can do is wipe the litter pan bottom with vinegar and let it air dry before adding the wood pellets in. The single best way to fight odors, of course, is cleaning the litter pan even more often than you do, at least the corners.

I use a pelleted litter as well – not the wood stove ones but one called Lone Star Litter – same thing though. I’ve tried all kinds and am happiest with these for odor control.

My personal experience is that Yesterday’s News is perfect on odor control. I currently use wood stove pellets, because they’re so cheap and also do a great job. I don’t think the odor control is quite as good (I can sometimes smell a piney smell), but the cage is in the dining room and far enough away that I don’t notice it. If it was in my bedroom or something I might notice. I only change the boxes (one per bun) twice a week and I don’t notice a smell other than hay.

I also have a sensitive nose and am allergic to some scented things like perfumes and house sprays, so I sympathize. I used Carefresh for years – the expensive white kind that was better for allergies – but had to change because Sammy doesn’t like it. I use Aspen pellets which only have a faint wood smell at first. Then I sprinkle aspen shavings over it because she likes the feel of that, and it really soaks up the smells. In the morning I sprinkle a little layer of fresh shavings (DO NOT use Pine shavings, by the way) and there is no odor when I walk in after work.

You can also leave an open box of baking soda near it but way out of reach of the bunny.
