So I hear you can feed rabbits broccoli and that they really like it.

And then I heard that it gives rabbits gas and can cause serious issues, even death.

And then I heard that you can feed them leaves, but not the florets.

And then I heard that you should give them broccoli, cabbage, etc for fiber- and this woman said that her vet said not to worry about gas and that it wasn’t a problem.

So what does this mean?  I’ve never fed my rabbit broccoli, and probably never will, but I’m still curious.  I thought it was bad for them so when another BB member said they were feeding it, I looked it up and couldn’t get a straight answer.  Some say “it’s fine if you don’t give too much”, but how much is too much?

It CAN cause gas in bunnies, it really depends on the bunny itself. Some bunnies have iron stomachs while others are more sensitive. Small amounts should be fine if your bun can tolerate it. I’d try just a tiny tiny amount to see before giving more.

My buns will barely touch it. I believe all of the broccoli is technically safe, but that doesn’t mean they’ll eat it. It’s true it can cause gas with some buns, so it’s recommended in a very limited amount. There are so many better things that don’t cause any sensitivity, so I just stick with those.

My rabbits love broccoli but I am careful when feeding it. I only feed a small amount of the tender florets as the stems are said to be more gas-building. I also never give any vegetables in combination with pellets or close to pellet-feeding time. Pellets are a processed feed and have a different digestion time than the verggies.
Still, even a small amount of the broccoli florets can lead to a gas episode in a particular bun who is sensitive.

My bunnies also like broccoli but I don’t feed it like a regular staple. They get it in limited amounts. So far it does not bother them. HOWEVER just double dittoing what others have said….. there are some bunnies that are very sensitive to it. My bunny Bailey would get poopy butt from it, and it can cause gas in others. So like other have already stated— it’s an individual thing and it’s normally given in limited amounts.

Broccoli is a member of the cabbages family of vegetables (I’m pretty sure), and with bunnies or humans, some tolerate it well and others don’t. So you will find that veggies like broccoli, brussel sprouts, kale, these tend to be gassy because they are similar types of veggies.

As to “what is a limited amount” – I would use the weight watcher’s form of measurement, ie. the palm of your hand. If you hold veggies in your palm, it will almost never be too much or too little. For seeing if your bunny tolerates it, I would pick off about 3 or 4 florets at most, and feed those only. then, if the bunny has normal poos, behaves normally and likes it, you can give that amount as a side dish with a base lettuce. I wouldn’t give any gas producing veggie to the bunny in big quantities, like a food dish full, until I am sure it’s fine. Better to mix the salad.
