        Hi all,

Just a quick question…  I had Blu, my 3.5 month old bun, neutered yesterday and thankfully everything went well and he seems to be doing great.  However, I noticed this morning when I entered his pen (for food/water/litterbox duty) he was circling me and I think lightly grunting/almost wheezing noises, hard to explain.  But it sounded like what Oreo used to do before she was spayed, and I believe is just the noise associated with their courting behavior/hormonally charged behavior, you know what I mean.

Weird thing is, Blu never humped (still hasn’t) and never really did all the mating behaviors like Oreo did…but now, the day after his neuter he sort of was (at least I think that’s the noise I heard).  Question is, has anyone else experienced this or think it’s normal?  I have a feeling he’ll be a little crazed over the next few weeks as the hormones die down, etc..  and I clearly remember Oreo being a nut once she recovered from her spay for the first few weeks.  I think the surgery just jostles them and their hormones a bit.  I’m not overly concerned, just curious about your experiences…

        Thanks in advance!

After a neuter, the hormones are going crazy. It is quite normal.

I haven’t experienced exactly what you have, but my male did go absolutely hormonal on me for the following 3 weeks after his neuter. Out of nowhere he would chew and destroy everything he would come across (wall paper, shoes, bags, pillows, everything really) and he would get into our couch or bed and pee all over the place and mark it with poop. He never did those things before the neuter.

A lot of people in here have had same experiences.

Oh geez. Karla and I posted at the same time and I lost my reply.

The shortened version… could it be he was excited for food? Or that the pain meds were starting to wear off and he was mildly uncomfortable?

Only one can post at the same time? That is weird. Sorry for ruining your reply, Beka.

                Thanks Karla and Beka…

Yes Beka, it’s possible he was excited for food, I know he didn’t eat much last night.. But then when I gave him his salad he was so darn excited he just kept jumping around like a nut, and didn’t really go straight to the food. He likes to stand on his upside down basket and stare at Oreo or us… It was great to see, I’m glad he’s feeling ok. And after I left the room for a few minutes he settled down and I could hear him munching away.. Also, it could possibly be the pain meds wearing off, I know he was really out of it last night (picked him up at the vet around 6:30 and he was still pretty doped up). I gave him his dose of metacam this morning as well, which I think excites him as much as food does… He actually took it straight from the syringe while I sat in the pen with him! Oreo practically needed a straight jacket and a neutral territory to even get her to put the syringe near her mouth. He made me so happy with that…

It’s okay Karla. I don’t know why it does that. Most of the time I am smart and I “select all> copy” my response before hitting submit (so I can just paste if it gets lost), but I forgot this time.

I am so glad he’s doing well Ali. Boys really do bounce back so much quicker.

It usually takes 4 weeks for the full effect of the neuter to take place and the hormones to drop. This is quite normal behavior. He actually sounds like he’s doing very well in his recovery. Make sure he doesn’t jump around too much if he had stitches.

Nearly a year after neuter and Jackson still makes those soft honking “I love you” noises when he is excited

man he bounced back to normal pretty fast… my bun didn’t even eat for 2 days after his surgery. but he ripped out his stitches and had to go back and get more so maybe that is why. watch him carefully and make sure he isn’t to active cuz believe me you don’t want to go back to get more stiches.
