I know everyone says that if you hear a bunny scream you’ll know…

My bunny was laying at the front of her house (her cage) and she was in the tucked position with her legs all curled in and looked like she was kinda sleeping. She suddenly let out a squeak that was kind of long and she did it twice. I’d say it was kind of similar to the beginning of kissing sound and was about this long (———————–) Just try to imagine that in verbal form lol

She didn’t appear to be hurt or anything and I picked her up and held her for a while. She loved me with kissed and all, so I can’t figure it out. At the same time, when I replay the sound over in my head it makes me sad, but not like I burst out crying or something with it. Nothing different was going on, there weren’t any threats that I know of unless may a bug was near her cage? I checked and couldn’t find anything there. Although, last night I was picking up the stray poo that didn’t make it into her litter box and there was some weird little bug. I grabbed her up and I swear she knew I was saving her from the evil! My boyfriend came and got rid of the bug. No idea what it was…

She’s never made a sound like that before. She talks and sometimes squeaks little tiny baby squeaks. I don’t know. I’m just worried that something inside her was hurting or something. When she made the sound it almost looked to me like she startled herself, like she didn’t expect to make that sound. I just don’t want my little baby to be hurting and me not know it.

I’m having a hard time imagining the sound. Some rabbits are more vocal than others – are you sure she wasn’t snoring?

I have a Dutch like your Bella who happens to be extremely vocal as well. He mumbles, grumbles, thumps and snores.

It’s not possible for us to know if it were a scream or not. If she is okay now and eating/drinking/pooping/moving normally, I would not worry about it, but keep your ears/eyes open for signs that there may be something wrong. In most cases if buns are ill, they are not screaming, but rather grinding their teeth loudly. Screaming is reserved for major fright or sudden intense pain.

A rabbit scream sounds similar to a human child’s scream but more high-pitched. It is very disconcerting, you can’t miss it for what it is. A rabbit who just screamed would be breathing rapidly and in a panick.

Rabbits can make a range of sounds, such as sighs, squeals, squeaks, snorts, snarls, humming, chattering and honking.

Bella was lounging when you heard these two sounds, so I am pretty sure she was sighing.

It is quite possible that your bun simply had a nightmare.

Here’s a vid of what a rabbit sounds like when it screams in terror.  You really don’t want to try and find this type of video on Youtube as most of them have to deal with rabbit’s dying but this one is a rabbit who thinks that it’s owner’s voice is a scream and is screaming in return.

Here’s one giving short honks. Although I’ve never heard one whimper like this, I would normally think that such a sound is it honking in love for the owner but because rabbits naturally look terrified, it’s easy to anthopormorphosize it into crying.

Sorry in advance because everyone’s probably seen this but it’s my favorite rabbit vocal.

Haha, those vids are very cool! The screaming one freaked me out at first, but oh well. I’ve never heard my rabbit make many noises, mostly yawns, but most sounds of hers come from her doing stuff. Thumping, dragging hay around, scratching around in paper, but not really any sounds from her mouth.

Perhaps I ignore them since I’m used to a lively and vocal household, or maybe she would make more noises if she had a rabbit companion.

I don’t think you have to worry, but that’s a good thing.

Oh rabbit screams are awful! One of the first bonding sessions I did with my two resulted in Comet screaming when Chubs took a nip at his (still intact) “junk” while getting face humped. It was horrid and I was terrified. He wasn’t hurt, and the skin wasn’t even broken but poor guy! You would deffinitely know if it was a scream!

That first video— I’d scream too with that lady’s VERY annoying voice. I wonder if the rabbit has some sort of sensitive ear and it actually hurt!  Her voice actually hurt my own ears (the woman’s second yell).

I heard a bunny scream once before at the shelter I used to volunteer for. One of the VERY experienced volunteers was giving the bunny meds (and she knows how to do it and she is an expert handler so it wasn’t because she was hurting him or anything) . I think it’s because he was fairly new and just had been through alot before he got there. It shook up the volunteer too as that noise is pretty startling. Makes me think that it might be a prey response to startle a predator too – so when this bunny was about to get meds, he may have been trying to get out of it by startling the volunteer. (it worked temporarily!)

At first, I thought somebody was coming through the sliding glass door (you know how the doors can sometimes squeak when they are moving.) That’s what this sounded like to me.

Do any of these sound like what you heard?
How is she today? Any more noises?

you definitely remember it once you hear it. I’ve heard a lot of squeaks, squawks, whimpers, honks, barks and I swear a snicker or two, but only one scream.

I had Hershey in for her first checkup and the vet tech was just holding her and she let out a blood curdling scream they heard out in the waiting room. Luckily Sheena didn’t drop her, just put her down on the table and Hershey whipped around to face her and give her a sound thumping before dashing back into the carrier. It was a very scary sound, everyone in the clinic was sticking their head in to see who was being killed.

She is fine today! And I heard no more sounds out of her. Other than her usual thumps or mumbles/squeaks. My boyfriend also suggested that since she was probably asleep she may have been dreaming. She’s so cute!

Those videos made me sad though, the poor bunny screaming at it’s mom, and the one whimpering. I like to think the whimpering was loving her, puts my mind at ease.

I know I worry too much. I don’t know what’s wrong with me but yeah… I just do.

Thanks guys! The lionhead vid was cute!

Oh… BTW I did look up on youtube a long time ago b/c I wanted to know what I’d be hearing if ever it were an issue… Bad idea… I am a vegetarian, so it was really upsetting. Once I saw the video come up, it took me a min. to realize what was happening. The bunny was in with a snake, and I won’t say anymore, but I immediately shut it off and of course cried. I can’t stand things. Poor animals. I know it’s natural, for the snake to eat prey, and for rabbits to be prey, but I just can’t. I can’t deal with the thoughts. Too emotional about animals lol

Awww I love it! I was also wondering why that lionhead kept yawning. OMG that bunny in the video at the end looks like a small dog, like my mom’s maltese when he could seriously use a haircut! Oh… and how did they get those bunnies to stay so still and get a pic? Geeze… My bun would run off in a second!
