Yeah, I’m thinking it was most likely a dirty litter box protest.
I have thought about a health issue, but both are eating, drinking, pooping, and peeing as usual. They’re as active as usual, and none are showing any signs of distress/pain. I called my vet (who is recommended by HRS and is a rabbit specialist) and she said that she doesn’t think it’s imperative that I bring them in right now, she said I can wait and see if anything about the situation changes.
Anyway, I would think that if it were a medical issue, at least some of the accidents would have been elsewhere in the apartment, perhaps under the dining room table since they hang out all day under there or in the bathroom where the like to poke around and hang out in the dirty laundry basket
The thing is, all the accidents hae been literally right next to the litter boxes. I know it’s not a problem caused by one of them not being able to hop in (even little Jeannie can jump easily over the side) and the litter box is plenty big for them both – they often sit next to each other and munch. I do have two litter boxes right next to each other in the living room and in the pen, in case they ever want their own.
I already do fresh hay daily, but I’ll try sprinkling some more litter (wood stove pellets) on top of the soiled stuff to see if that allows me to change the boxes every other day rather than daily.
It’s incredible how much poop and pee these little guys produce daily!
