I change my bun’s litter box every 2 days.. but I’ve noticed that her butt smells like urine a little bit. the litter box is pretty big..

perhaps i should change it everyday instead of every other?

What type of litter are you using? Is it absorbent enough?

            i use aspen.

i got her a new litter box because she was getting so big. the one she has now, she can be more comfortable in. i changed the box everyday with the first one, so perhaps i need to change the new one once a day as well ><

            any other litter suggestions?

I just switched to wood pellets, I love them. Bee likes to dig in them so it makes them louder to dig in than shavings, but they are easier to clean up and very cheap. When I used Aspen I was changing the boxes everyday. Does it seemed really soaked in just one day? You could try changing it everyday or try switching to new liter. I like carefresh, it works great and absorbs tons, but its expensive for the amount you get. I have 4 boxes in my room and I can’t afford to clean them everyday on carefresh so I switched to the woodstove pellets. Just make sure they say 100% natural / no chemicals added on the bag and you are good to go if you decide to try those. Petzy has a wonderful thread about testing types of litter, let me try to find it for you!

You really shouldn’t need to change it every day if you’re using the right litter. What are you using? Wood stove pellets or YN are my favorites. I only change my boxes twice a week.

Have you picked her up and flipped her over to check? She might have cecals stuck down there which can be very smelly.

                  I use aspen shavings.
I have a spare bag of Carefresh in the spare bedrooom. I will try that.

Lintini, thank you for the link! I will try out different stuff the next time I go to Petsmart! I have a shredder, but I don’t think it will shred all that cardboard!!

I used Aspen as well, because it does absorb odor and is safe, but I did notice that the shavings are not as good as the pellets for odor control and absorbency. So last week, when I was able to find Aspen Pellets again (It’s called Aspen Supreme) I put a layer of the pellets in the pan, then covered it with a soft layer of the shavings. It hasn’t smelled at all. The idea being the pellets will absorb what it soaked above them. I sprinkle a fresh layer of shavings over a used part in the morning to have it last a bit longer. Not sure she likes this, but it’s looking pretty good so far.

If your bunny is ok with pellets, just go with only the Aspen Supreme. That lasts much longer and is great with odor.

                      OO, thanks RabbitPam
I’ll be checking out the pet store next week. I used the care fresh this afternoon after I cleaned out her cage. She seems okay with it. Not eating. Just doing her usual thing.

I checked her butt and it looks fine. I think it is the Aspen -_- I don’t like Pine, as it has too much fragrance and isn’t good for bun.

I will definitaly try different options!!

Aspen really doesn’t absorb odor that well, so I’m not surprised. I would try out some of the other litter suggestions here and see if you have better results.

And pine wood pellets are fine for bunnies – they’re processed differently than pine shavings and the volatile compounds aren’t present. So don’t discount wood pellets because they’re pine (though they also come in hardwoods, which seem more common in my area)
