Well, in my opinion its best to have them neutered just to make them happier. Intact buns always feel the need to mate mate mate. Its just the way they are, they are prey animals, its in their nature to just breed as much as possible in order to maintain the species. Get rid of that constant impulse, and he’s free to be himself rather than a slave to his sexual needs. It also reduces any aggression, territorial spraying, all that fun stuff. Not to mention you can get him a friend later that he wont try to either mate with or kill constantly.

If your mom doesn’t know of his accidents, you may want to show her to give her incentive. Unless the incentive she gets is to get rid of the bunny.

 What is your mother’s objections exactly.  Is it a nature thing?  IF so, that actually has come up before and I’ll try to find the threads that will actually be very helpful for you as we’ve had members have the exact same problem and so far, the parents have relented or the kids just got their bunny neutered anyway.  

Just let us know what exactly the issue is for your parents so we know how to address it. 

100 bucks is such an awesome price. There are BB members who would LOVE to have a male neutered for that price. When he goes in for a check-up on his teeth, can you have the vet speak with her regarding neutering and why it’s a good idea for males?

The vet in Purcellville is WAY cheaper and the most experienced bunny vet in this area. I would DEFINITELY go there. They are also an emergency vet and there’s someone there 24/7. I like knowing they’re always open in case something comes up. They are the ones who took care of Zinnia when Trouble beat her up and she needed 14 stitches.

Well, I’ve heard that eventually, rabbits will mark everywhere and spray (don’t know if the spray is true). I’ve also read that they will turn into little monsters that have a mission to destroy everything! Maybe that will get her! If I could find a vet to neuter my male bun for that price I would absolutely do it!

With my parents it’s a “I can’t justify dropping $105 on a neuter when another rabbit costs $20″ (there’s a Spay Today program nearby that offers neuters for that price). Nevermind that he’s a living being, and a family member. If the dog or horses or I got sick, they’d drop that in a heartbeat (in fact, Mom dropped $500 on Rosie’s vet last week, for a checkup she didn’t need). And she’s taken measures to prevent me from getting cancer (Guardasil vaccine), and had 2 organs removed to remove and then prevent cancer on herself. Why doesn’t he deserve the same?

Are you sure the $105 covers everything? When I asked how much it was to spay and neuter the vet gave a low price and said that didn’t cover the anesthetic or the meds. You may want to double check.

Well, I just had a 15 minute argument with my mother about the neuter. Which ended in her transferring his ownership to me. So now I’m definitely paying for his neuter out of pocket. Anyone know what the price for rabbit insurance is per year?

We were just talking about that on another thread and it is around $115 per year BUT I don’t think it covers spay and neuter and niether do the other members who have it. sorry

oh good. The reason I asked is because there are vets that have a credit line you can apply for. Like a credit card. I don’t know much at all about it but I saw an advertisement on the vet site I was on. I don’t know if it is like a “pet” credit card from a credit card company or if it was like a credit card for that particular vet.

Rabbits:

Exam Fee (required): $10.00
Female Spay: $95.00
Male Neuter: $77.00
Pain Medication (required): $14.50

Plus a $5 processing fee. That’s through the Spay Today program.

What about anesthetic? That is required also.
 

 I have to pay A LOT more than that. So far what I was told was that I have to pay $44.51 exam fee. Fee for blood work, fee for anesthetic (the big fee) and I didn’t catch the neuter fee but the spay itself was $63.00. Oh, and meds. They couldn’t give me a price on everything over the phone.

Glad to hear your mother has transferred the responsibility to you. The fees you wrote above are very reasonable, and if the vet is experienced with exotics, I would recommend that you go with that. The anesthetic would be assumed in the speuter, but you can ask just in case. The question to ask (as a test) is whether you should fast your bunny before the surgery. The correct answer is “no”. Also ask if they accept credit card payments or bill in installations.

An experienced rabbit vet in the yellow pages would likely be called an Exotic vet.

He had his first vet visit today. Just an exam. Turns out he did NOT need teeth trimmed. I worry too much.
I talked to the vet – between her and the other exotic vet at their clinic, they do over 1000 speuters on rabbits a year. All I had to say was “wow”. I can’t imagine how many surgeries they must perform, seeing how they have vets that cover everything from exotics to equine. I would imagine the rabbits are only a small part of the practice. And the $105.50 does indeed cover anesthetic.

Wow! That is a great price! I would love to pay that much to have Baxter neutered!  It’s going to cost me that much to get my bunnies examined. lol
