› FORUM › DIET & CARE › Lemony opened up is neuter wound…
Lemony got neutered on Friday afternoon. We get a call on Saturday morning that he has opened up the wound, and that he will have to go back under a second time and get stitched up. Poor lil guy. He seems to be doing fine now, I am just worried that he might do it again. Any suggestions? It is so hard to get your bun to stop grooming in any area. That’s just what they do, you know? And I don’t want to have to get a cone unless absolutely necessary…
The vet said that this was an extremely rare occurrence. Of course Lemony would be the one to lick / chew through his wound… And I had just asked them the night before if there was a chance that he would “chew out his stitches, or what have you” (at the time, I didn’t know that they stitched him up with the stitches on the inside). The nurse said that it almost never happens. Go figure.
The vet tech said no jumping, that he must be cage-bound for at least a day… We NEVER lock him up in his cage since he has gotten so big – we keep him in the cage / xpen area. We tried for a few hours while the anaesthesia wore off, but them he was nudging and chewing on the bars to get out. We tried to block off his favorite jumping spots and perch, but he tried it anyway, and I’m afraid he is going to hurt himself – he launched himself up and then fell on his side. Is it terrible if we let him do his normal things, as long as we are keep a close eye on him? He’s got such an independent spirit, he doesn’t want to be told what he can and can’t do. If something is four feet high, no one is going to tell him that he can’t make the jump (well, while he is recovering, I will).
Any suggestions?
Aww Poor Lemony!
For me, I did not let Fern in her condo at all for fear she would try to jump up on ledges, even though they were blocked off. I just kept her in a very small section of her X-pen. I have heard the suggestion that you could even keep him in a small carrier to prevent him from moving around too much. If he has been over grooming the area then you might have to get him a cone
also some people wrap the area so that the bunny cannot groom it. It is ok to leave him in a tiny cage for one day, he may be bored stiff, but at least he will not be moving around too much.
I’m sorry that he did this and had to go under. You’re going to have to brace yourself to do what’s right for him, because if he harms his stitches again you will have a really serious problem. Better to have a bored, complaining cranky bunny than an injured one.
If you have any platforms in his cage, just remove them. You MUST confine him as the dr. ordered. Their advice is what is best under this circumstance, and i would follow it. I also think they are giving you a very conservative estimate by saying only one day. Some vets have the bunny in their cage for several. That will never do him a bit of harm. Don’t teach him to chew on bars to get you to do what he wants. It’s a good opportunity to teach him that bar chewing gets ignored (it’s hard, but turn on the TV or something so you don’t give in.) and it won’t become his best way to get you to let him out.
Jumping up on furniture, several feet high, is also not good and can pull out his stitches again. Be a meanie for a week – he will definitely feel better sooner, forgive you, and you won’t be in debt for all the post-op repairs you otherwise may need to do again.
Congrats on getting the procedure overwith.
Thank you for the advice, RabbitPam and Moonlight Wolf! You are right, I need to not be such a such a softie. Sigh. I have to be a better disciplinarian and do what is best for him. Thanks for the reality check!
He is now cage-bound. Doing the right thing for the bun is often very difficult for the human, especially when he seems so happy out and about. Arg. Time to rest, Lems, time to rest. <3
I ditto the advice that has been given. I am also surprised at only the “one day” of confinement ordered. Normally it’s a few days to a week. Since your bunny is a pretty active little guy, you might want lean toward the more cautious side and keep him confined for a couple more days. Give him some things to destroy — like a phonebook, or head over to the
to see what home-made toys you can create to keep him busy during his confinement time. .
Good Luck and keep us updated.
My bunny mocha ripped his stitches open to when he got neutered it was horrible. we took him back in and we didn’t have enough time to put out, he had to do it awake, and my dad had to hold him ! ( cuz that vet doesn’t have a vet assistant he is the only one who works there. btw never going back to him again unless emergency.) i was like in tears then when i was in the waiting room i herd a crash and a “oh no”! he had jumped of the table
hop your guy feels better ![]()
Poor Lemon Is he leaving his stitches alone now?
My bun Stormy started obsessively washing and picking at his “area” as soon as I brought him home, making it bleed, and was required to wear a little cone for two weeks. The vet said she never had a rabbit need one before and it is pretty rare. It was really sad and hard for me more than him I think. He looked so pitiful. I had to fee him everything by hand but at night we would take the cone off and supervise him for a little while to give him a break.
Lemony seems to be doing fine, although I can’t really tell how swollen he is… But I think if there was a problem he would let us know (hopefully).
The vet said that if he does it again, he has to wear the cone. Really hoping it won’t have to come to that.
Poor Stormy! The vet said it was super unusual – go figure.
Which bun is your avatar? I absolutely love his coloring!
@Mocha, I am so sorry you and your bun had to go thru that!
You poor things! He is ok now, though, right?
<3 <3
Ps. Binky, thanks for the advice! We loaded him up with lots of toys to keep him busy! It was surprising, he didn’t seem to mind being cooped up in that little cage too much. He’s been a good sport (so far). ![]()
yeah he is fine now ![]()
mocha, how awful for you. Glad he’s OK now, but Good Grief!
Sounds like Lemony is being a good boy. Keep up the good work, Lemonbun. ![]()
Thanks, RabbitPam! ![]()
Stormy is my avatar bunny. He feels his color is pretty awesome too ![]()
oh, poor lemony! I hope that he heals quickly <3!!!
How is the gorgeous Lemony doing today?
My Nixie ate her stitches out before she even left the vet. She ended up getting the cone off later that night, but sort of just stopped bothering her staples/stitch 2-3 days after her spay. I just literally stayed right next to her and did what I had to do from the floor so I could tell her to stop if she started grooming her stomach too much. How’s Lemony doing with his now?
