  I was comparing prices of YN and wood stove pellets and at Petsmart they now have Small Animal, Ferret and Rabbit YN. They claim it is specially formulated for these animals and maybe the pellet size is different than the Original YN. And guess what….they charge almost twice as much for the “specialty YN”. Does anyone know if there is an actual difference? Bindi does fine with the original YN. She doesn’t eat it and there is absolutely NO smell around her kitchen…er…kennel . Just curious.

  Pretty certain there’s no differences. Others that use it have said they buy the cat version as it’s cheaper.

  i read in a rabbit book that yn smells worse then other litter. what do you guys think?

  There is NO difference whatsoever. I buy that Cat bags, cause they are the cheapest of the YN “family” – but No – I have used the Rabbit YN and the Cat YN , and Honestly ZERO difference. The marketers have just figured out that there are other “markets” out there!
  
  I’ve used a variety of litters and I don’t think YN smells. Really, with a speutered Bun, the only time the litter smells is if it hasn’t been changed in two days!

  Mocha, it just smells like newspaper to me – kind of soggy newspaper. Even after I dump it in my litter/compost container and reopen it, it smells like wet newspaper – really no pee smell or anything. I really like it. I was also wondering if the wood pellets control odor as well as the YN. Guess I’ll just have to try it and see. It IS cheap enough!
  
  I figured it was a marketing ploy for silly rabbit people like me – oh, look, honey, there are rabbits on the packaging . I am also attracted to bright colors and shiny wrappers. Hubby rolls his eyes and says I’m a marketers dream!

  I love YN…my bag has the cat on it. Is there another kind? It is unscented, as I’m trying to keep irritants to Mimzy’s nasal passages to a minimum.
  I can use it for everybun except Fiver, who likes to eat it. :X For him I use Feline Pine.
  I just wish I could get my cats to use it instead of clay litter…Tidy Cat…that stuff makes me miserable and I bet it’s making the buns sneeze too.

  i use the small animals YN.. it comes in a large bag but i’ve never compared the price to the cat version. perhaps

  Mocha, I clean the litter pan every day and sometimes every other day. Even when I go every other day, it still doesn’t smell.
  
  Mimz, I thought about trying to get my kitteh to use it, too. I wonder if you mix it half and half with your regular litter and then taper off until there is nothing but YN in the cat’s litter pan, too. You would need to change it every day, I guess, and that would be expensive. I was actually wondering how wood stove pellets would work for a cat – they’re cheap and you could afford to toss the whole thing out every day…hmmm….
  
  Corpathina, the original cat YN is a good bit cheaper than the small animal YN and it appears to be the same product.

  Baleful said it… it’s all about MARKET. Stick a baby bunny on the front and they can raise the price. Fortunately, bunny people are smarter than this. We either use the cat version of YN, or we skip the pet supply store altogether and go next door to the hardware store… lol.

  Bindi-yeah I tried getting the cats to use the combination litter…wound up having to clean a few too many spots on my carpet and that was a thumbs down from the hubby. I think they’re just too ingrained with using the clay. Thank God the good weather is coming and we can open our windows for fresh air!
  I’ll see who’s selling woodstove pellets here though. (We are currently fighting legislation to ban woodstoves in Alaska, can you believe it? So no idea how available the pellets are.)

  Why are they trying to ban it? Is this pellet stoves or combustion heaters in general? I was under the impression burning pellet fuel was a greener option. We are only just starting to see them here in Oz and I’m rubbing my hands together in anticipation!
  
  Edit to add: MM, I just read there’s a pellet plant due to (or has?) open in Fairbanks….Woo hoo! lol
  
  Bindi – I think it should be suitable for cats. The product I use (similar to WSP) is marketed as horse bedding and also animal bedding/litter including cats.

  The woodstoves need wood, of course, so deforestation is certainly a worry. But the big thing is; A) we have what’s called ‘temperature inversion’ here and LOTS of forest fires and the EPA is trying to get our stoves banned due to the air pollution content.
  However, most of the smoke in our area actually wafts over from China, so they’re using corrupted data to reach their conclusions. You know how they can get.
  B) the oil companies don’t like competition. Even though we ‘drill-baby-drill’ here…our fuel is outrageously expensive and mostly exported. Wood stoves would be a wonderful option, and cheaper, but we can’t have that. >.<
  Better for all of us to freeze and get buried under lots of snow and permafrost…that way they can dig our bones up in a few million years and use US for fuel.

  Well on the bright side, while the meanies wanting to ban it all freeze in their houses with empty pockets, you’ll be nice and snug with your wood stove burning pellets

  I use Yesterday’s News but have never come across one specifically for small pets. I’ve bought some before that was labeled as “softer texture” which is more crumbly than pellets but it was the same price. I prefer it but can’t find it often. I usually just pick it up at Wal-Mart because it’s quite a bit cheaper than the pet store. I love Yesterday’s News.
