So I have noticed both of my buns have “sleep” in their eyes pretty much on a daily basis.  I had mentioned this to my vet when I had Oreo there, and he said it’s common, but that there could be something more going on if it’s excessive, etc.  So when I was playing with Mr. Blu tonight (he’s ~10 weeks old) , I noticed his was a little more crusty underneath his lower lid, on his fur.  I usually help them a bit with the sleepy/crust, but I didn’t want to touch this bc it wasn’t really crust, it was more of dried up stuff on his fur.

He would not stay still for anything, so these pictures were impossible to take, but here’s 2 to get an idea.  I called the vet but I’ll have to wait until they open tomorrow morning (they were closed when I called)…but I’m guess I need to get him checked out right??  It’s hard to get a good look, but it really concerns me the way it looks right now….  Of course he’s acting like a spaz/lazy bun (he changes from one second to the next…) as usual, and eating/drinking normally so I can’t complain too much…

        Thanks everyone…

Though it’s hard for me to see too much of anything based on these photos (looks like a little horizontal line underneath his eye that could be some goop), if you are saying that the normal “sleepy” is now showing up as more goop running down the side of cheek or wetting more fur below his eye, then that does indicate more than just a little “sleepy” stuff.      And if so, was it more than just one time or is this now ongoing (every day) — like if you see it again over the weekend then it’s time to make an appointment with the vet.

It’s very good for you to be observant because bunnies can have medical problems, yet act like their normal selves for awhile.

Keep us updated over the weekend how things are going.

Not sure if this helps, but I tried attaching better pictures…  Usually I would see “sleep” but I didn’t see that at all…instead it’s more of a horizontal line of crusty-like fur, but when I touched it with my fingertip it seemed somehow connected to the bottom eyelid so I wasn’t sure if the whole part of the eye was involved?    Also, it didn’t feel wet, but based on the hardness of it now, it must have been wet at some point right?

Finally, this was the first time I’ve seen this..  I tried dabbing it with a wet washcloth but he wasn’t having it.  Should I try to clean it a bit?  Otherwise it might be hard to tell if it happens again.

So you don’t think I need to rush to the vet or anything?  Just monitor it and perhaps clean it?

            Thanks so much.

If it’s all crusty now, then it it was wet, and it’s just the little crusties left behind. As long as he is eating and pooping and acting normal then from the description it just sounds like something you should make an appointment for when your regular vet is open, but nothing that you need to rush to an emergency vet at this point. (based on the info above)

If you are able – get a soft luke warm damp cloth and try to gently wipe it away. It would be important to get rid of the “old” so you can how much “new” goop continues. I know he wasn’t having any of it, but if he’s squirmy and your afraid you might drop him, then I’d say stick low to the ground, hold him to your lap (maybe someone can help you) or put him in towel bunny burrito – being that he’s only 10 weeks old, it should still be possible without coming out of a bunny battle scene. It’s just that babies can be so slippery as they really know how to wiggle out…so that’s why I say stick close to the ground.

              Good Luck! Keep us updated

Thanks BB, I cleaned it last night and this morning he seems okay. I’m sure I overreacted… But his fur still looks a little funny. I’m hoping not to see any more of it, maybe his eye just got irritated or something.

                Thanks again for your help..

I’d keep an eye on it (pardon the pun) for a few days. Just watch for wetness or goop below his eye. I clean out Samantha’s sleeps from her eyes once or twice a day, but when Spockie had a wet area of fur below his eye frequently, it turned out to be a blocked duct, which is common. A little perscription ointment cleared it up, and he needed it every few months or more for the rest of his life. Diagnosed and easily treated made it no big deal.

Thanks Pam. I’ll definitely keep an eye on it… His eye has looked normal ever since Friday night…so hopefully it stays that way. I feel better knowing you clean your Samantha’s eyes 1-2 times a day…I have to do that with both of my buns and I was assuming it was ok. I think it’s just so hard for them to reach it, it’s maybe the one thing we have to help them clean. And I don’t like it to sit there for to long or it will be harder to wipe away easily. Oreo (my older bun) seems to really appreciate when I do it, and Blu is learning that I’m just helping, not trying to bother him

                    Thanks!

Wow, and I thought Mimzy got sleepy eye a lot…1-2 times a day, Pam?? 0_o
My lop had this look one day about a year ago. We concluded that it was just some fur or dust that had irritated his eye for the day and it was much better after I cleaned it up. I wonder if it really is just the bane of a lope-eared rabbits’ existence to get weepy eyes and snotty noses due to their facial builds. I have a lot more ‘issues’ with Mimzy than I do with my other two ‘uppy’ ear bunnies. He seem a lot lower built to the ground, so he tends to ‘Hoover’ stuff up a lot more than they do.
But something that persists in looking like that could be anything from infection to tooth trouble, so it’s best to monitor it carefully and, if you’re ever unsure, it can’t hurt to call the vet.
