hello everyone. I was hoping that you can tell me whether or not this is normal and just part of the coat changing process.

Here are the pictures (too big to upload here): http://picasaweb.google.com/JKao109…directlink

As you can see, there are fur sticking out from under her chin. When i pull on them, a whole chunk comes out. It’s been like this for over two weeks and its starting to worry me. It doesnt look like she grooms that area so i’m thinking maybe that’s why it’s taking so long to lose the coat in this area? Should i just help her out with grooming/brushing this area under the chin? She definitely doesn’t like me playing around with her chin area though. What should I do?!

        Thanks.

That’s pretty normal (at my place at least). My agouti lop gets tufts like that in that area. I try get them but he doesn’t allow it much.

              Thank you for your responses.

Mocha200, yeah, she ISN’T shedding anywhere else. That’s sorta why i am concerned. I read that bunnies losing furs in the chin areas could be due to dental problems, silva burns (i think). I don’t think she has that. Thank goodness.

Jerseygirl, thanks! I feel much better. =D

                  Is she spayed?

Profile indicates not spayed. Pulling her fur from this area is often a sign of false pregnancy. Or the real thing if she has been in contact with an unfixed male. If a false pregnancy, there’s not much you can do but let it run it’s course. The fur will grow back.  Has she been displaying any other nesting type behaviours? i.e. Gathering hay or paper in her mouth. Collecting it for her habitat.  Being more territorial or aggressive than usual – or just really busy?

my bunny would get those tuffs when he misses a spots while grooming. they are usually easy to spot because they turn gray (his fur is black).  they come out rather easily so i just pull them out myself.

it could also be a false pregnancy like mentioned above. i’ve never owned a female bunny but i’ve heard of female rabbit purposely pulling out their fur to make a nest for babies

Both my bunz shed there and on their back sides…I just assumed because they couldn’t reach those areas as easily???

If she is Doing it, purposefully, then running into her “room” in her cage and starting to frantically build a nest, then you may be seeing a false pregnancy.

Bindi has some good pictures of a false pregnancy nest in a recent thread:

Obviously Spaying will stop this, otherwise be prepared for PMS rabbit every month or so.

During a normal shed, I often see little “clumps” fall out, particularly Around Coco’s Whispers. She hates me to actually brush her, but if I pretend like I am just giving nose rubs, I can hypnotize her for long enough to “pluck” at them.
