Hey everybunny!  In about one month I will be traveling overseas for a few weeks to join an island ecology research team.  I will only be gone a few weeks and I won’t even be leaving for a month, but it’s never to early to worry, right?

Anyways, have you ever had a bunny sitter before?  I have a family member and a back-up bunny sitter, but I’d appreciate any tips that you have to make the bunny sitter’s life easier.  So far I am planning on doing the following:

        *  Complete the bunny sitter’s guide worksheet.

        *  Prepare enough Goody Bags to last the entire trip (provides fresh hay, food, a small treat, and new toy every day).

        * Pre-wrap all daily veggies as discussed in this thread.

        * Print off a list of safe fruits and veggies and place it on her cage.

        * And obviously leave behind a pre-paid phone card, stock plenty of litter and feed.

Anything else I’m missing?  Are there anything that I could do to make the bunnie sitter’s life easier while I’m gone (would it be a good idea to buy extra litterboxes and just have the sitter switch them out every few days)?

It’s never to soon to start planning for this. Your trip sounds so interesting too.

I would leave a credit card on file with the vet you use and let them know as well what is going on just in case.

Having extra litter boxes for the sitter to easily switch out is a nice idea as well.

If you’ll be gone a few weeks that’s gonna be a looooot of goodie bags and toys. That might be going a little overboard. Also, veggies will probably not last a few weeks, even in the fridge. As a former owner of a pet care company I reccommend leaving a supply of pellets and hay with measuring instructions for the pellets and instructions for unlimited hay and the name of the place you get it from in case the bunny plows through it. Pre-wash and wrap the first week’s worth of veggies and leave a list with money to cover the cost of what veggies to buy, where to get them, and how to prepare them. Write down what kind of play time your bunny requires and discuss what’s normal behavior for her so there isn’t any guessing on the part of the sitter. (Someone who is unfamiliar might freak out at the sight of a flop.)

Put everything that isn’t a veggie in one area so it’s easily accessable and the sitter should do fine.

ETA: Also, don’t forget to write down the feeding schedule!

              Thats some great information.
I also leave numbers to my rabbit savvy friends if they have any smaller questions, Sicne I ahev so many rabbits, i have a sheet with their pictures and names, plus some information about each of them (their additudes, favorite traets, bunny friends etc.) and info of the cage theya re in JUST in case we have an escapee.

If i was to have 1 or 2 bunnies, I have a lady who runs a rabbit sitting business out of her house. The bunnies go there and never want to come abck they get so spoiled! LOL

              Have a wonderful trip!

if you want the veggies to stay fresh longer put them in a container or a ziplock with paper towel underneath and on top of the veggies.

Wow – great preparation! I think the only thing I would change is I probably wouldn’t provide a full list of fruits and veggies and just be sure to have the sitter stick with the ones that your bunny is used to. Anytime you add a new food, even if it’s good for them, you need to watch for stomach upset.  You wouldn’t want the sitter to think as long as it’s on the list, s/he can just substitute other greens/veggies in or try new ones.

A good time to try something new is when you are around to supervise.

Have a wonderful time with your research team. Sounds very interesting! And it sounds like by the time you are ready to go you will have all your ducks in order and your bunny will be just fine (though I’m sure your bunny will miss you)

If possible, I think it would be a good idea to have the bunny sitter come by during feeding time (more than once if possible) to meet (if they haven’t already) the bunny. Let him/her feed bunny and pick him up to see how they get along together.

I had a bunny savvy friend take care of my buns when I was away for a week and I had her come over to meet them and show her where everything is. I was worried about one of my bunnies getting statis while I was gone, as I was having some problems with this, so I left her a detailed “Statis Emergency To Do List” and made sure my first aid kit was fully stocked (simethicone, Critical Care, etc).

I feel it’s better to over-prepare than under-prepare, that way you can worry less and enjoy your trip!
