Hi all!
I am here to share my anxieties for my poor Perry as I am about to take him to get neutered next week and as a mummy, I’d appreciate some tips as to what I could do for him ,before and after, that would help speed up his recovery process! Experiences/stories from others would be great too, as I think it is a good idea to share these stories to make us be more confident carers for our bunnies!
Thanks all!
Keep him in a smaller area for the first few days, not jumping allowed. Don’t want him to tear stitches
A good way to check for any swelling or redness is to make them stand up for treats, then you can squat down to peek at their tummies to see how they are doing without having to pick them up. Getting picked up won’t be comfy the first while ![]()
Thanks for the great advice! I really like the treats idea and getting him to stand up!
The next question might be hard to answer, but what do you think are the chances that he’ll pick and nip at his stitches?? That is what worrying met he most!
Fingers crossed that he’ll be as comfortable as he can be and I’ll keep his status posted ![]()
Monkey left hers alone, so no idea with that lol. I think if he’s comfortable enough, he should leave them alone. So make sure to get him pain meds for the first couple days.
Heya! Indy left his stitches alone, he would lick the area but never was trying to rip them. Alfalfa hay really interested him in eating and raisins! And when I fed veggies I soaked them in lots of water. He wasn’t drinking from the water bottle so I switched him to a water dish and that solved the problem. They look miserable when you pick them up and they smell like vets office….but the next day he was back to his old self. Crazy male bunnies I swear….
Oh that’s positive! I’ll be sure to get those pain meds
. Would softening his food help him pass bowels much easier and less strain on his pooper region??
Nah, should be good. Just don’t introduce new food til he’s all better and he should be fine with eating.
Thank you very much Monkeybun
. He’s scheduled for Friday 16th, fingers crossed that all goes well with no complications!
Alrighty, today I got up early and Perry just looked nervous! I tried to calm him down with pats etc, but alas the taxi came and off we went to the vet. He didn’t enjoy riding in his box/cage thing very much, he looked sort of miserable. I got more and more nervous dropping him off and said my final good bye to him before he went off into the surgery room.
I hope his surgery goes smoothly, but will definitely keep this posted! Watch this space…
Vibes to Perry. Please do keep us updated.
Update:
I went and picked up Perry at the Vet’s and they told me that the surgery went very smoothly with no complications! When I got him home he was still very drowsy from the anaesthesia so I carefully cradled him out of his box and into his cage. He looked very quiet and sombre and his back legs are still getting their feeling back, I know this as I watched him try and crawl into his litterbox and missed the first time, and got in the second go. After he left the box I saw a wee accident just outside his box. Poor guy I know he was trying so hard not to make a mess!
I’m taking him back to the vet in 10 days, so now it’s me monitoring him constantly to make sure he’s recovering well. Oh, and fingers crossed that he won’t pull his stitches out!

Will do! (((Healing vibes))) for Perry.
Latest Update:
This morning Perry was wide awake and I fed him quarter of an apple for a treat, and to also check him his stiches. All seems well, no swelling and no discharge of sorts, so all seems well! He’s eating well and drinking
. Now the next phase is me just keeping an eye of him and that he doesn’t pull out his stitches!
Yeah, happy Perry is doing well. Continuing healing vibes to you little man.
A different question, he’s been in his cage for not quite 24 hours, but at 4 this afternoon it will be. SO do you think I can let him walk around outside his cage in the evening?? I’ll keep in the hallway so he can’t climb or jump on anything so he won’t strain his stitches, that’d be all right won’t it ??
Feedback is always appreciated, cheers!
Well I think it would be ok myself. As long as he doesn’t go binky crazy and over do it. Just be aware pain meds mask pain (obviously) so he might be more active than is wise. But if it keeps him from boredom, a run around is a good thing. Don’t feel too bad about the confinement period. There cage/pen/condo should feel like a safe haven and somewhere they like to be. Also, it helps get them back on track with toileting if this has slipped prior or post neuter.
If he’s a social guy, it’s probably that he wants you to be around – not so much that he wants to be out.
Hmmm, ok then. My thoughts were that, if he gets some gentle exercise I figured it could help his healing process. I’ll let him out for a short period instead and see how he goes
.
Here are some pictures of him Post-op, look at the little guy …all dozey
Aww, Poor Love. He’s beautiful! How much does he weigh now?
Awwwww Perry is a little handome guy!! Poor baby, that’s how Indy looked too after his bits were removed! As soon as Indy was looking normal I let him have my room again but he was binking all over and jumping in and out of a box full of hay from BinkyBunny that I ordered. He snapped out of it really quickly. I shouldn’t have let him sprint all over though….he’s just insane.
Thats great he is doing well! Boys do bounce back quicker than girls. I had to come home early to make sure Fern was eating, but thistle was in a shelter when he was first neutered so I don’t truly know what he was like.
Update: Day2.
He weighs about 8 pounds (I had to convert from kilograms). The nurses at the vet thought he was big for a 6 month old Flemmie
. My little guy still has like..1.5 more years of growing so imagine how big he’ll be then! I am actually amazed at how quickly Perry has recovered! He’s eating, drinking like he used to, even his mobility is not laggish at all oh and his bowel movements seem to be regular as well. Mummy is very happy with the results! I let him out last night for a wee walk around the hall, carefully watching that he doesn’t strain himself too much…He just seemed really happy! Sniffing around me, wanting pats. I only let him out for a short while though as I’m still cautious about him needing rest
. This morning he’s just sitting quietly next to me and this might be really early to say but..he’s already more friendlier lol.
