› Forum › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Odd Question….(update, wet spot on dew lap now with Video)
I’ve been seeing Gracie do this a lot where she’ll groom her dew lap and pull at it and lick it some more. It sounds like a silly question but I thought I’d ask, does anyone else’s rabbit do this? I tried to look at her chin while she wasn’t trying to kick me in the face but I really couldn’t tell if there was anything wrong or not.
Lainey does that all the time. If its not normal, I have an odd question too !!!
It seems to be common among bunnies with dewlaps. They’re both spayed, right? If not, they will pull fur from there to build a nest, and sometimes they still do that even if they are not having a litter. Personally, I think they’re just getting all the crumbs out of their chins.
She just started doing this, I had never seen her groom her dewlap so much haha! Yup she’s spayed. I thought maybe she was fluffing it out and it was to attract Archie hehe! Ok I’m glad it’s nothing then.
I just had a flash of cartoon animals brushing their fur with forks to attract boys…lol
I’m not sure if she’s stopped or not, but I haven’t caught her doing it anymore but she has this spot on her dew lap that the fur is a little matted (like when you bathe their fur and air dry it’s all curly). It’s dry today but yesterday it was all wet. I felt it and I don’t feel any bumps (as far as I can tell). If you want I can try to snap a picture if she’ll stay still. Any ideas?
Dewlap grooming is normal. A wet dewlap is not. Please post a picture. Some rabbits get their dewlap soggy in their water bowl and it can cause moist dermatitis. You would see this, though, as the color of the skin goes greenish due to organisms growing. As I believe Gracie does not have access to water bowls, only bottles, the only way for hers to get soggy is if she were drooling. You may want to get her teeth checked.
Yeah they all have water bottles. If she’s drooling wouldn’t around her mouth by wet too? It seems to be dry. I’ll keep an eye on her though. It’s not as wet as it was the other day. It just looks alittle off white. I tried my best to get a decent pic of it, it was hard though. I was tempting her with raisins but Archie kept getting in the picture The only other way she could get her fur wet is when there’s juicy lettuce and the juicy is on the floor or bowl after they eat it and it gets on her fur but usually that’s green. I just keep coming back to when she was grooming it and it looked like she was pulling her fur or “trimming it” with her teeth (looked like she was eating her fur). I tried to comb it out last night but she didn’t want anything to do with it. I’ll try again today.
Archie almost got in this pic (his nose is in the bottom). You can see the spot because it’s a little discolored. I couldn’t tell but I thought the fur looked a little shorter…maybe from her grooming it before.
I tried pulling her fur over while she was laying down to get a better pic since it was hard to get a good picture of her sitting up.
It’s right underneath my middle finger in this picture.
If her mouth is dry and not drooly, especially her chin, it wouldn’t a tooth problem. Since the area is dry now, it’s likely nothing at all.
My Deirdra eats the fur off her dewlap too. It is possible Gracie did just that.
I’d say keep checking her mouth to be sure she’s not drooling, but if it’s dry there now, just watch it and compare it in about a week after it’s had some time to grow back. She may have had a little bug bite (I get mosquitos in here sometimes and I see them in Sammy’s room) and scratched it by chewing. If it’s gone but growing back, her fur should fill in and be dry. It may come back in another color though. They change colors unexpectedly sometimes as they get older.
That’s really interesting rabbitpam, I would have never thought about a bug bite. It’s a possibility since it’s getting warmer out. I’ll keep an eye on it, thanks guys!
Otto will groom his chest all the time. Sometimes when he’s trying to reach a difficult spot he’ll stand up and almost fall over. *eye roll*
I think if her fur isn’t wet then it’s probably normal.
Monkey has fallen over many times grooming her chest and back.. its funny. Especially when she tries to get her ears out of the way…like they CAN be…lol
Rucy had this same strange coloring and her fur would actually get curly and matted underneath. I would have to comb that out every so often and dry it with a soft cloth. (sort of shimming between my fingers) The difference though was that she did drool —however, I couldn’t always see the drool. It was as if it drooled down, the side of her mouth dried, but it left a damp spot underneath her chin/neck. I think it’s just a hard place to dry.
Jack can also sometimes get a damp chin, but it was never as wet as Rucy’s. . I discovered the culprit though. He had a deep water bowl, and back when he was drinking tons of water, his chin would get wet as would drink for a long period of time, andas he brought his head up from the bowl, the liquid would drip down fand sit right there in that neck/chin area. Again, took longer to dry. And because he had an apple juice mix due to his calcium issues, that sugary water would mat the fur.
I have also heard of some excessive chin markers get damp gunky chins. Jack is one of those too. He marks and marks and marks — chinning everything, even my hand. He’s always been a bossy bunny — “That’s mine, and that’s mine, and that over there is mine, this is mine, mine, mine, mine” He’ll even chin Vivian’s poo! He’s gross. Which also might contribute to that yellow chin right where his chin glands are. (not all the time — just every so often)
So I’d just start watching really carefully and see if you notice anything. Could still be a tooth issue, so of course, keep you eyes open for that.
Keep us updated.
Thanks BB! I can rule out the water bowl (since they have a bottle) and chin marking…she hardly marks anything. I’m still thinking she’s not drooling but I won’t rule it out just yet. She’s still grooming her dewlap though. I caught a little bit of her doing it. Usually she sees me and stops when I have the camera but I caught just a little bit of her doing it (at the beginning). Sometimes she’ll do that for awhile but she was mostly grooming her whole body this time. Keep you guys updated.
*Bump* Still there…

Leroy’s chin gets like that. It’s really yucky and always sticky. I wipe it off with a damp cloth occasionally, but becasue the fur is usually a bit damp there, it falls out! Poor guy. My vet took a loot at it and didn’t think it was anything to be concerned about though. Thing is, Leroy doesn’t chin anything. Jeannie is my chinner. So I wonder if his stucky chin is becasue he doesn’t smear his scent glands on anything and it just builds up there!
Anyway…. Skibunny, I’m sorry I don’t have any insight as to why Gracies chin would be like that. What about calling your vet and asking if he/she thinks it’s something to be concerned about/something the vet needs to see? I like your ring though!

I think we have to give her a foot bath (she keeps peeing outside the litter box…maybe territorial or just to piss me off ) and I’ll wipe off her neck and see what happens. She freaks out when I try to touch it, but it is on her neck so it might just be sensitive. I’ll call the vet when we get back from vacation if it looks the same since it doesn’t seem too serious since she’s eating and pooping (everywhere) normal.
I like your ring though!
LOL thanks!
Hmmmm. Well, since the water bowl is not an issue, and the chinning is out (though maybe it can get built up — something for me to research) then right now, I just don’t know. Maybe it is a tooth issue in the sense that something is bother her in her mouth, and she grooms as a way to sooth and it gets gunky if she focuses grooming there. These of course, are all just guesses, and a vet would hopefully have better insight to this.
I think we’re all stumped with her haha! We’re going on vacation pretty soon so I don’t want the vet to say she needs meds or surgery and then drop it on my parents while we’re away. So when we come back I’ll call the vet up and see what she thinks. Ugh I don’t want to leave them!
I keep coming back to a bug bite too but who knows.
EDIT: I picked her up and wrapped her in a blanket a little bit ago and looked at it more closely again to see if there’s any changes but it’s about the same. Yellowish color and it’s a lot shorter than the rest of her fur. I can’t really tell if there’s any bumps there, I thought I felt something but the fur is matted up so it might just be the fur.
The shorter fur could be from her grooming there and the discoloration could be from her saliva too. Jersey has some yellowed areas in spots she grooms alot. Rumball had sort of clumped fur under his chin when I first got him. It has lessened some as the dewlap area has reduced a bit. I sort of think it can get warm and humid there.
Another thing I noticed with Jersey a while back was the fur under her chin had seemed to have thinned. I worked out it was from rubbing her neck when getting hay. They had it in a cardboard box I hung from their litterbox and cut a hole in. I had to make this edge less abrasive. Could anything like that be the cause behind Gracies spots?
I can’t think of anything really. I picked up some Revolution today from the vet’s that they said to try. If that doesn’t help that it’s vet time when we come back from vacation. I’m completely stumped with her.
