Hi! I recently began fostering a pair of adult, spayed/neutered rabbits who use their litterbox consistently inside the cage. When I gave them roaming privileges in my dining room, they chose an additional spot near the hallway to pee/poop occasionally. So, I added another litterbox there, and life was good for a little while.
THEN, I switched their litter from woodchips to pellets, and… OMG. I’ve never seen so many pills and puddles on the floor. I cleaned up the first incident after their morning run, only to find the behavior repeated that evening. Today, I removed the outside litterbox, just laying newspaper down, hoping they’d go into their cage where the litterbox is, but instead they peed on the newspaper, which leaked onto the floor.
I’m horrified and don’t know what to do. Ultimately, I’d prefer if they didn’t use that spot at all, since it’s right in front of the hallway and gets a lot of foot traffic (don’t want to step in pee or trip over the litterbox).
If I concede and place a litterbox there, how do I get them to start using it again? And is there a way to discourage them from using that spot altogether? Help!
