I am a very very frugal person. OK, it’s a little bit of a problem for me sometimes, well – not so much for me, but probably the people I live with
I don’t like to waste money on anything, even litter in the litter box. How deep of a layer is the minimum amount of litter required?
What kind of litter do you use?
It really depends on the litter you use. I use the wood pellets (called Equine Pine or wood stove pellets when available). They turn into dust when wet. We put about an inch deep of it in the litter box and we bought to binkybunny screen for the litter box (AWESOME product!). So every day I get their trash can and lift up the screen and dump it out. We bought a cheap cat scooper (no holes) and scoop out the dusty parts and if need be put another scoop of litter in. It lasts us the whole week now! We used to clean it out every Wed. and Sun. and we wasted so much of it.
I have never used anything but Yesterday’s News, which is recycled paper pellets. I use about 2 inches and change my bunny’s litterbox every other day.
I use good mews (same as yesterday’s news but cheeper) and use a really thin layer, like barely cover the bottom. I also only put it in the back corner. The front opposite corner I put hay. I dump everything into the compost every other day, on the off days I’ll shake the litterbox to spread the litter out a bit more (Arduina likes to pile it up and I don’t want her going over the edge) and then add another thin layer.
Ditto Skibunny – maybe check out the litter screen in the Store. That should help save on litter.
Binky Bunny had a video link on the homepage recently, showing it in use. http://www.youtube.com/watch I found it quite comical with it’s sound effects ![]()
Always a good idea to try to save money. What has worked wonders for me as a way of cutting down litter is to buy Pampers night bed mats. One mat fits my cage and then I pour the litter over, slightly less than 1 cm (0.3937 inch). I make sure that the places they pee the most, is where there is most litter, of course. It works wonders to combine the litter with the mat, and there is no smell at all anymore.
Only downside is that it is quite embarrassing to buy these mats ’cause people must think I wet my bed ![]()
I use Equine Fresh and I just put a very thin layer in the boxes. That thin layer turns into dust and expands almost to the lip of the pan after a week but isn’t wet and doesn’t stink. If I put an inch in the box it would be overflowing and make a huge mess in about 5 days!
I use wood stove pellets (and have used YN). For each, I put a paper towel down on the bottom, then put barely enough litter to cover. Not even and inch of litter. Both types are good at expanding and soaking up liquid, so you really don’t need much. I only change it twice a week and don’t have problems with smell.
I also pile it up in the back a bit because Otto only pees in the two back corners. Then hay goes in the front.
I use Yesterday’s News. I guess it’s kind of a moot point right now anyway, she won’t use her damn litter box anyway and she’s driving me up a cute fuzzy wall.
She’s still so little (7 weeks now,) so I’m not too worried yet. I used to have one of those corner litter boxes in one corner of her cage, and she seemed to prefer the corner that didn’t have the litter box in it. So, then I got a bigger, rectangular cat box (the smallest size cat box Target had) and put some litter on one side and hay in the other, and she squeezes herself into the tiny little space between the litter box and the side of the cage to do her business. Last evening, I watched her jump into her litter box, dig around, munch on some hay and then she jumped out and let loose next to the box – and I couldn’t get to her fast enough to scoop her back into her box.
oy. At least I’m not going through too much litter this way ![]()
Is the bottom of her cage bare? Do you have a blanket or a towel down or anything? If it’s not totally bare, I would remove everything from the floor so the pee can’t be absorbed.
If it already is totally bare, then … huh. I don’t know! You could try getting a litter box that takes up the entire side of her cage. If it’s really big, she might end up using it and then you should use the smaller one once she has the hang of it.
Also, some bunnies seem to prefer something soft, so you could try switching to Carefresh and see if she likes that better.
Whenever she pees outside the box, make sure you’re cleaning it up really well with vinegar/water solution so she can’t smell that she has peed there before.
There’s cardboard on the bottom of the cage which makes it hard to clean up because it is semi-absorbent. I started cutting that corner out of the cardboard and replacing it with more cardboard. We’re in a kind of transitional phase cage-wise so that will have to do for now. I think I’ll try out getting a slightly larger litter box for now, or maybe try to squeeze the old corner box next to the new cat box.
Yeah, I would take out the cardboard (when you can, since you’re changing the cage around) and leave the floor bare. That way, when she peeds, it won’t absorb and she’ll have to sit in it. That becomes yucky pretty fast, so she might decide the litter box is worth it. But tearing out the messy cardboard is a good idea. Is it wire under the cardboard? I would maybe still clean under it, just to make sure there’s no pee smell at all.
There’s a bunny at the rescue who pees on the bare cage floor *the second* I pick up the newspaper to replace it (he also has a litter box half the size of his cage, which he only uses some of the time). Oh my goodness, drives me crazy! Sometimes bunnies just want to do what they want to do!
I put a pretty good amount of litter in Dusty’s box and i’ll just stir it around and freshen it up throughout the day and change it like every third day. What I don’t understand tho is why she pees in the litter box half the time and the other half she just pees on the cardboard in her cage? The only place she’s ever peed outside of the cage is in my dirty laundry D:
Dusty, it’s probably because the cardboard absorbs the pee. Often bunnies will pee on anything absorbant. The easiest thing to do is take everything absorbant out of the cage. If they’re on wire, you can put down a piece of plywood with lino tiles or something. When they’re young they don’t understand that litter box = toilet. They think anything that absorbs is a good place to pee.
And some bunnies are also more likely to mark in their cage than out of it. My guy still leaves some poos outside of his litter box, but still in his cage. Outside of the cage he’s perfect.
Dusty is also a young bun, unfixed yes? There’s another reason ![]()
Yeah she’s still too young to be fixed but i’ll try the wood/lino thing :]
I put a thick layer of newspaper on the bottom and then a SINGLE layer of Woodstove Pellets on top. I could read the newspaper thru the WSP, it’s such a thin layer. They expand and become sawdust when wet, so you do not need a lot at all. I am also cheap so teh WSP are a lifesaver. I spent $50 on one year’s worth of litter… for two bunnies.
I use a method similar to Beka’s, but I put down a paperl towel instead of newspaper (we don’t read the newspaper, so we don’t have it around). The paper towel is awesome for peeling away most of the sawdusty mess into the trash.
^^^EXACTLY! Newspaper or paper towel peels off the bottom so nicely. Makes clean-up a breeze. And I spend more a year on my newspaper subscription than I do actual litter.
