For the past week, Chacha has been biting her playpen wire and it has been waking me up in the middle of the night to the point where my sleep is disturbed
..
I’ve tried vinegar on the wires, but she kept on chewing on it anyways, I’ve tried a water bottle… I don’t know what else to do![]()
Monkey did that. I ended up weaving flattened cardboard from the paper towel rolls through the bars so she couldn’t bite them lol. She stopped, cardboard came off, she doesn’t chew them anymore ![]()
I’d also fill her hay box before bed, and possibly put a willow toy inside her cage for the night. She may be bored, or want to chew for her teeth, and if she has options she may go for them instead.
Be sure to ignore her, too. If she gets you to respond, even to try something else, then she’s getting your attention, which is the point.
Sometimes after the lights are out and I’m in bed, Buddie takes to chewing on his cardboard mini-haven which is a loud noise as its hollow. I say SHHHHHHHHHHHH!! at the top of my voice and if he continues, a couple more SHHHHHHHH!!! as loudly as I can say it is usually followed by silence. He seems to understand the word and its plea for silence of whatever he’s doing that’s making noise. Fortunately, except for getting up to nibble throughout the night, he’s quiet once the lights go out, knock on wood. My first bunny Lash would rattle the cage bars at night if I caged her for the night and I just gave up and gave her her freedom, upon which she chose to sleep with me, next to my hip. After that I left her cage door open all the time and she would go in to use her litterbox, drink, and eat pellets, otherwise she was pretty free-roaming in my bunny-proofed apt. So if giving ChaCha more freedom in the night is an option, you might consider expanding her playpen area to give her more room, I don’t know, she still might want even more room!
Thank you everyone
I realized that some bunnies are just… noisy ones
As for Chacha, I clip on her playpen to her cage (the dog kennel lol) and I keep the cage door open at night. It was never a problem for me, UNTIL she became hormonal!
I decided to give her her own bedroom, which is a spare bedroom in the house I am at. She was pretty angry with me, so I am giving her some space. I think both of us can gain something from this. I will get better rest, so I can walk in the early morning and feel refreshed, and ChaCha can have more room to roam
I will hang out with her after work and watch movies on my laptop, read, etc in her playpen. She likes to use me as a playground 😮
Besides, she will be getting her own little room when I move with my dad into an apartment ![]()
lashkay, Sammy does exactly the same thing.
It’s like our routine. I go to bed after closing her cage door. She chews on bars. I say SHHHHHHH from the next room. Twice. Then she stops. It’s like she wants out, gets the message it’s No for the night, hears where I am, and we’re done.
One day my mother was visiting and she was in her cage hearing us talk in the next room, so chewed on her bars. (We were leaving soon so I couldn’t let her out.) I just called out “Sammy, quiet. Shhhhh.” And she stopped. My mother couldn’t believe it. LOL
Nixie chews on her NIC cube bars alllllll the time, day or night. Sometimes if I say no a few times she’ll stop…for maybe a minute.
I know this is a little off subject, but is it bad for rabbits at all? Like their teeth or anything?
I’ve heard that rabbits can do injury to themselves if they chew on metal wire and bars excessively. Like chip or break a tooth, maybe other injury to their mouth. It stands to reason. Rabbits aren’t beavers of metal trees. They’re not even beavers of wooden trees. The way some enraged rabbits tackle the bars of their cages, it’s a wonder more of them don’t hurt themselves at it, from my standpoint Hopefully those with bunnies who rattle their cage door and bite the wires will find a way to solve the problem so nobunny gets hurt.
That’s what I was kind of worried about…do you think spaying will help at all? She’ll be old enough in a month.
The benefits of spaying, and neutering, are well documented and the BinkyBunny Forum is loaded with testimony praising spaying as having been the solution or a substantial help to different kinds of negative behavior. Since spaying reduces or eliminates territorial marking, it stands to reason that spaying your bunny might well make her more calm and make her lose interest in chewing on the bars. Up until the time she has her spay, could you do what Monkeybun suggested and weave cardboard paper towel tubes between the bars or similar? Another idea might be to line the NIC bars that she can get at, with something so she is faced with a smooth or safe to chew surface she either can’t gnaw at or is safe for her to gnaw at. I think spaying her is a great idea and the sooner the better. Have you tried willow “toys” to distract her from the bars and focus her attention on gnawing something safe?
I will be getting her fixed in May.
I moved her, and so far I have caught her chewing on the bars a few times. I go “SHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!” and she backs off
Perhaps it hurts her ears!
Lash, yes, I have given her willow toys. I fill her play area up with all sorts of toys.
I’m glad she is responding to your Shhhhhhhes. I hope the situation is getting better, sounds like it is. May is not far off, getting her fixed will probably help to “fix” things too!
twix does that every night once i come into the room, shes such a suck though…. shes in her cage 99% of the time so i feel horrible. when i shh her she stops, normally, and if she doesnt. i tap on the back of her cage and she stops… giving her something to eat at night right before bed always means no rattkling the cage that night so , idk brittany, that might help..?
Chacha always has hay, food, and a bowl of water full (I’m paranoid with it, I have to make sure bun has lots of water!!), before I go to bed or before I leave for work!
She has been doing better in the other room
She has lots of room to play and run!
That’s so wonderful that you were able to give Chacha more room for herself to run around in. That’s a cute name and she is a cute bunny.
No, thanks everyone for the wonderful advice! I’m so happy there is a forum that has so many other wonderful bun moms and dads to help others out with
Last night, ChaCha binkied into her pink igloo (I said “OMG ARE YOU OKAY?!”), .. but she was fine and ran around. She even put her head in the opened snack jar that I keep her snacks in. Such a smart bun..
Moose always binkies into walls. We hear him several times every night smacking into the NIC grids blocking off the entertainment center hehe
