$400 is actually not out of the range, especially if you live in a metropolitan area. You may have some luck contacting vets in more rural areas, but you mostly have to just sit down and make the calls. I’m not familiar with any myself, but hopefully someone else can offer some recommendations. Also, contact some local rescues and see if they have any recs on where you can go.

I had a cat not a bunny while living in Ashland, MA, but I went to Dr. Migday at Slade Veterinary Hospital in Framingham, MA. It doesn’t look like they do rabbits, but you could call her to ask if she could recommend a local colleague. She is really well thought of and did wonderful work with my cat.

The only places I can see that have low cost spay/neuter programs are in Fall River. http://www.faxonarl.org/clinic.htm   http://www.petpartnersne.org/   Not exactly in your area!

I don’t know what else to suggest other than contact organisation like SpayUSA or HRS for your area and see if someone can advise you. There may be more up to date info or someone with some “inside knowledge”. I think these programs operate on a coupon type system. You apply for a low cost spay/neuter for your pet and if you qualify – they refer you to clinic that participate in the program.

wow I wonder how much the VCA hospital in Weymouth Ma charge. That is where both my dogs where fixed and it was about $200. Wow a bunny costs more to be spayed?? I should check VCA because that is where I was going to take Pixie.

Bunnies are considered “exotic” animals, and they require specialized vets to spay/neuter, so it does cost more.

I think $400 is the upper end of the range, not the norm. However, the closer you are to a big city, generally the more expensive it will be. I live outside of NYC and paid $400.

I just called a vet in my area. For the spay,blood work, meds to go home with it is $313.80. Then she will need to be seen before spay for a visit check which will be $190. I think we may go there. Also said make sure I do have a girl because you cant really tell till they are 16 weeks???

You should be able to tell sooner than 16 weeks the sex. What is included in the $190? That seems extremely high for a check up.

Many people can take a very good guess at gender long before 16 weeks, but sometimes the parts are so little that they can fool the most experienced person. 16 weeks is generally when a males testicles would be fully descended and it could be safely assumed that a bunny without them is a girl. However, there are other ways to tell earlier than 16 weeks.

I also thought $190 was $$$. He said blood work was also included. Do they have blood work twice? Once before during checkup and day of surgery? He is calling me back. The tech took all my info down and told me he would talk to the vet and the vet will give me any info and advice and will call me back. I thought $313 was reasonable for the spay, blood work, and the meds but agree $190 prior was $$. They said $55 for the visit, then $34 for blood work….have to ask what else is included there….

My vet only did blood work before the neuter. My office visit fee is $90 alone, but $190 seems high even for me! Even with a check up and fecal test I only paid $160.

My general exam is around $48 and they don’t need to do bloodwork twice. $34 for bloodwork is cheap too. Since your rabbit is young, you might ask if they even recommend bloodwork.

Ok so I just called another vet. This was $260 for the spay which included everything. The pre visit is $54 and they told me they do not do bloodwork. Should I have blood work done or is it not necessary?

I’m in Hartford County, CT and just had my bunny neutered yesterday. It was $300. Seems to be the going rate.  The vet I found for Miles is a specialist for exotic animals and I’ve been taking him there since I first got him.  He’s a great vet, explains everything thoroughly, and is really good with him.  I’ll pay the money if it means the best care for him, especially if its someone he’s comfortable with!

I’m in the Boston area, and I took my rabbit to Chestnut Street Animal Hospital for her spay. Dr. Kelsey is their rabbit vet. I found her on one of the vet referral pages on one of the rabbit websites, can’t remember which one. I also don’t remember the exact cost of a spay, but I definitely know it was under $400. I think the whole thing- exam, surgery, meds- was around $250. Dr. Kelsey is very knowledgeable, and the staff are all very helpful. She’s also one of the cheaper vets for spay surgeries (I called at least 10 vets in the area for prices!).

Hey guys, we appreciate the new recommendations, but this is an OLD thread. PLEASE read the dates on the posts before you reply. It can lead to some problems when an old post is revived. (For example, someone may have asked for advice for a bunny that is now gone, they get an emailed alert months or a year later and it is very upsetting to them to read.)
