On Friday night Gracie didn’t run up to get her food like she always does.  She ate a little piece of lettuce I gave to her but couldn’t eat anymore.  She’d eat treats and pellets though.  I gave her Metoclopramide (1/2 a pill dissolved in water) that night and the next day.  On Saturday night (I think) she ran to eat her food so I stopped her meds.  She was fine up until last night again.  So I gave her meds last night and this morning.  She’s still drinking water so that’s good.  She had her papya tablet this morning also.  She hasn’t ran around the living room lately.  *sigh* She was just at the vets too and got a clean bill of health   Does anyone give their rabbit something different to treat stasis?  She’s just getting over her heavy shed (or at least not shedding AS much), so I’m guessing that might be what’s wrong with her is all the hair.  Poor girl….

My best advice is to revisit the vet. Have the vet look at her teeth, perhaps it’s that.

You really need to know the cause in order to treat it since stasis is the result of something else going on.

The vet looked at her front teeth and said they looked good. My husband said she’s been eating hay and when I put the pellets in front of her she ate that too. Just won’t eat the lettuce. It’s not as crisp as usual but I wouldn’t think that would stop her. I’ll keep an eye on her. I know she’s eating something so I’ll give it a day or so.

What about the molars? Did the vet look at her molars?

No I don’t believe so, she would have needed a special tool to see in the back of her throat right? She was grinding her teeth last night but I’m not sure if it was her sleeping or not. I gave the vet her poo to check so she should be calling tomorrow and if she’s still doing this I’ll talk to her about it. I sure hope it’s not her teeth :o( But better her doing this now instead of while we’re on vacation in a few months.

Yes, they look through an otoscope. It’s just something to consider since she’s a lop and they are notorious for dental problems.

Just let the vet know how she’s been when she calls.
It’s funny, but Sammy ate all her hay and pellets and completely ignored her greens yesterday morning. She finally finished them sometime last night.
                    It was getting soggy too.

Comb her coat well tonight just to get any excess fur off, in case it’s contributing to the problem.

Thanks guys! Yes I’m hoping for a phone call soon, not sure how long fecal check takes though, I think a few days. If she gets worse, I’ll def. call but she’s still eating, not as much as she usually does but eating is still a good sign. I’m guessing she’ll be the same tonight, she’s been hiding in her box all day. I’ll have to put less lettuce in their bowl because Archie’s been having a feast the past few days and I don’t want him to get chunky hehe! I’ll def. comb her tonight.

I ended up giving her water by syringe because I don’t think she’s went to the water bottle We changed their litter so I should know if she’s going to the bathroom (it’s hard when you have 2 rabbits sharing the same litter box). I just hope she’s better by tomorrow or I’ll have to call the vet.

I ended up calling the vet this afternoon and ended up talking to her.  She said to keep giving her the meds and that they have a critical care package that I can pick up.  So we went out and picked it up and will start giving it to her tomorrow.  She gets it 4 times a day and it’s so she gets the nutrition she needs.  She’s still sitting in her box and Archie’s laying by her and protecting her…such a good husbun he is!  I did see her by the water bottle earlier today so I think she did get some water in her system.  I hate to see her like this but I’m so glad this did not happen during vacation in May.  I’ll keep you guys updated!  Thanks for the vibes

EDIT: She finally came out of her box today

As of yesterday she’s a lot better, eating lettuce and pellets but still not as fast and as much as she usually does.  Her poo seems to be getting a little better.  I’m still giving her meds (which she hates and tries to kick me).  She’s coming out of the cage more so that’s good.  I haven’t seen anything that says “this is what blocked me all this time” so I don’t know if she still has to get it out or not.  I ended up not giving her the critical care since I was going to start the next day (since we got home late) and the next day she started eating lettuce so I saved it.  At least I’ll have it if she stops eating again.

EDIT: I gave them their lettuce and she won’t eat it again…I don’t understand   If she’s not better by Monday I’m calling the vet.  She ate some of her pellets this morning and is drinking water still.

I would talk to the vet about checking her molars. Do you trust your vet? I am surprised that the molars were not checked though as if a vet is going to look at a bunny’s teeth they shouldn’t just stop at the incisors. Incisors can look just fine and the molars can still have  spurs that can cause pain and stress when eating which then can cause digestive upset as well — even if they can get food in.

Now the molars may end up just being fine, but at least that can be ruled out if that is the case, but it should be something to have checked out if this continues to be ongoing.

Does she seem uncomfortable at all? Is she pooping still?

You might give her the critical care today, and see if that gets her gut moving and back on track by Monday. Then call with an update.

Do I just give her critical care if she’s not eating at all? She’ll eat some of her lettuce if I put it by her. Pellets she runs after and eats some and she’s been nibbling on hay. Yeah I researched stuff on teeth and thought that might be it. I’m pretty sure she didn’t look at the back molars…..we did bring all of them in. There’s only two rabbit vets around here and the other guy is like 80 years old, we went there twice and he made me nervous and I just wasn’t satisfied afterwards. The one I go to seems to really know her stuff and I trust her. Gracie is pooping but they’re pretty small but at least she’s going to the bathroom. I’ll give the vet a call on Monday if she’s the same. She is out of her cage right now so at least she’s getting out. I just need Archie to leave her side and run around because with him eating all her food (we’ve been cutting the lettuce down) he’s getting a double chin lol!

If she is having teeth problems, then anything mushy given via syringe will go down more easily since she won’t have to chew. It does sound like she’s somewhat hungry, so maybe back teeth are the problem.

If you know what time your vet opens you can always leave them a message if they have a machine that you are coming by first thing. Otherwise, wait and describe her when you call in the AM.

When I gave them their lettuce today Archie didn’t go up to eat the lettuce. He was sitting by her and refused to eat. So that got me thinking….maybe there’s something wrong with the lettuce and it affected Gracie first. We went out to our local grocery store and bought 2 bunches of Parsley since I know they love that. I came home and washed off a little and they went for it, really excited to eat it. So I’ll put nothing but that parsley in tonight and tomorrow we have to get more groceries and will get different lettuce. I’ve been giving them green leaf and it’s all the same company at Walmart. Maybe their lettuce was bitter or maybe there was a chemical on it that affected them. I usually break the lettuce up and put it in the spinner quickly washing it off. But I will put each individual leaf and really clean it off. Is that the only thing you can do to clean it off is just put it through water…I’m guessing yes but just wanted to see if there was anything else.
If this works I’ll still call my vet and let her know tomorrow. Sandy really hasn’t eaten her lettuce (but she is rather slow at eating hers) and I’ll dump hers out and replace it with all parsley.
So frustrating when you can’t figure out what’s wrong or worse when you don’t realize it. I think I made my decision with keeping them upstairs even when we decide to have a kid because I couldn’t take it if they were in the basement and I wasn’t able to keep an eye on them and something happened to one of them.

                                                  Good plan, Sherlock.
I got some red leaf lettuce last night that has dirt all over it. I need to find my salad spinner, and usually I don’t wash it when I put it in the crisper, but this head is going to be an exception.

No soaps come to mind if that’s what you mean. I would just rinse thoroughly. Maybe twice. Pat dry with a towel to keep it fresh longer. (I wrap mine loosely with a towel in the crisper drawer and it stays fresh much longer that way.)

I was in the living room and saw them both sitting upstairs by their bowls *hurries to kitchen*  I washed off a bunch of parlsey and put it in their bowls.  I came back and they were down stairs…. Drat!  I started whistling and saying “up stairs, up stairs!”, they ran to the second level and then acted confused on where to go next while I kept saying upstairs and whistling (no really, they actually respond to that!)  They finally ran upstairs and gobbled down the parsley YAY!!!!  I was so happy!  Hopefully they’ll keep this up and it was the lettuce.  BUT I am going to call the vet and let her know what happened and also when Gracie was eating I could hear what is best described as when you grind your teeth together and get a squeeking noise.  I’m not sure if this is anything to be concerned about or not.  So now I can rest a little easier tonight.

The other week Otto wouldn’t eat any of the escarole we gave him even though he usually loves it. As soon as we moved on to romaine, he was eating it up again. So maybe there was something wrong with that particular lettuce!

I hope everything turns out ok for Gracie.

I’m about 90% positive it was the lettuce because they ran up to eat parsley again today. If we have different kinds then we’ll mix but we’ve been giving them green leaf for awhile. We went to the store and got Romaine, Parsley and turnip greens and will wash and mix them all up tonight. I left a message with the dr and also said that her teeth sound like they’re grinding together when she eats, so far she hasn’t called back yet.
