My sweet Mum has agreed to give me a vacuum for my birthday! I am turning 27 on the 26th of this month and have requested this because our vacuum, which is very old, is showing serious signs of strain…
I’m really hoping for some recommendations for a vacuum that is great for pet hair! Any suggestions?
Smooch!
I love my Dyson.
Dysons ftw. My mom even uses one for her cleaning business. Man, those things suck! lol
Monkeybun, what other types of cleaning products does your mom like. I’d be curious to know what she likes that really works well.
Oh my gosh! I don’t have the money for it right now, and my vacuum works fine but… I would LOVE to get a dyson ball eventually
The people I baby sit for has one, and sometimes I clean for them when babysitting, just to use the vacuum. ![]()
My mom adores Simple Green, Barkeeper’s Friend, and your typical toilet cleaner.. thats all she uses
She doesn’t need anythign else with how the Simple green and barkeeper’s friend works. She uses clean white bar towels to clean stuff, no paper towels so theres no paper fuzz left around, and it works great ![]()
I’ll try to see if I can find a link to the kind of broom/mop she uses too…
I hear good things about Dyson! Any particular model? I’m looking for something that really sucks up the hair, but also lasts a long time so I don’t need another one for next year’s birthday, lol
Thanks! I just looked up the Barkeepers Friend – I have never heard of this but I think I need to try it.
I myself do not prefer the ball model because, for me at least, I find it hard to maneuver. It does suck up hair. I think for every day general use these are great. I do use one exclusively for my rabbit’s room which I do not use for the rest of the house and to be honest, I’ve gone through about 2 or 3 that I’ve used exclusively for them because they get used twice a day and it’s obvious that Mr. Dyson didn’t intend for it to be used that much and for that purpose.
You can even looked at refurbished ones on Overtock.com which basically means they may have been used a few times and returned but are in still new quality selling condition but cannot be sold as brand new.
Barkeeper’s friend is great for stuck on stuff, marks on the walls, etc. Works wonders
Just don’t use too much if you’re getting a mark off a wall.. it can take the paint off too lol.
I have the DC14 telescopic reach one.. same one my mom has. We got lucky and got it on woot.com one day for half the usual price ![]()
Lizzie- We have the Dyson Animal machine vacuum. It works great! When our dog Joe was still alive he shed SO much! It was insane. But that vacuum works great. It’s pricey but it lasts forever.
Has anybody tried the Seventh Generation cleaning supplies? Is it worth the price?
I’d love to have one of those Dysons! I switched from a regular vacuum to a ShopVac when I had my son. My daughter never scattered small toys around like he did and we killed 3 vaccums before I gave up. It comes in handy cleaning up remodeling messes and the bunny room too without clogging.
I just prefer the shop vac myself – not much of a house cleaning tool but a great bun condo cleaning tool.
Shop vac. Easier on Mums back for one. She just uses the hose instead of pushing around the weight of a vac and throwing her delicate back out.
As far as hay Shop Vac yes folks shop vac. The highest rpms the better. Yes those dysons look good. Crazy how expensive vacuums have been.
Charley, I like the 7th Generation clothes washing stuff. I haven’t tried any of their cleaning products however.
I use a shop vac to clean out the cages but I’m thinking next tax season we’ll invest in a dyson because the one we have now (bissell) we have to constantly clean the filter. I’m not sure if it gets all the hair or not since Gracie is shedding like crazy right now lol!
I’ve heard the Dyson Animal can’t be beat for pet hair. I have a lot of friends who own them (and one girl has newfoundlands to clean up after!)
I can’t give any recommendations other than that, as I’m still using the cheap-o vacuum I bought 4 years ago for my first apartment!
Ah! You guys totally rock. I am lucky to have you : P
I think I might just send little Mum this whole thread. Sounds like the Dyson Animal is the way to go, especially since lately whenever I lint roll Mr. Remy it’s like a fur coat comes off…
Love my Binky Bunniers! Thank you so much!
The only difference between the Dyson and Dyson Animal are the attachments. So keep that in mind – you may not actually use those attachments.
Oh really Sarita? I didn’t know that! I’ll definiitely keep it in mind when we get a new vacuum in the next year or so. Is the Animal more expensive because of the extra attachments? I’m assuming it is.
It is due to the attachments. It took me awhile to figure this out and honestly, I never use those attachments. I think my purple one is the animal one. The best one for me has been the original one. I’ve gone through about 4 of them….
Dyson animal here, and it is the first vacuum I have owned that lasted more than a year. I have a doberman, 3 cats, a parrot, and a bunny.
We have the Dyson animal (purple one) and Sarita is right the only difference is the attachments. I do know that we use one of the attachments for our stairs- but for the bunnies we it configured as “the wand” (for lack of a better term) and then as a regular vaccum once the pens are clean and bunnies are back in.
Our family room (where the bunnies and the computer are is carpet)- so I use clear vinyl under the bunnies cages (sold at fabric stores- I think people use it to cover tables or other things usually)- but it is pretty cheap and protects the carpet. So I usually use a small broom/dustpan and sweep up the majority of the stuff off the vinyl before it is vacuumed. My husband has no patience and will not sweep it first- so he has to unclog the vacuum a few times from the hay- but it seems well designed that you can get right to the clogging areas easily.
seventh generation
I like their stuff. Not tested on animals is a big plus for me. Works good too.
I’ll stick to my simple green ![]()

man, would my mom LOVEE you!
Lizzie, maybe look into Miele too. They have pet hair models and a reportedly a good vac. I want one!
I use to have a Miele. It worked well, but just died after about 2 years. That is pretty short life span for that kind of money.
Next time I can afford a really good vacuum – I’m going for a Dyson.
I like Simple Green but, have not seen it lately. I have been using the “Method” brand, natural based cleaners. They work quite well.
Lizzie – my birthday is on the 25th!!!
Yea, I;m thinking about that better vacuum now as I walk around picking up all hay longer than an inch, so I can use my icky vacuum.
Wahoo!!!
Now that Sarita got me spring-cleaning even though it snowed today, I am reminded why I appreciate keeping my rabbits on hard flooring. Many vacuum cleaners have broken down for me and I did some researach before buying the one I have now. It is a Eureka canister one with a metal wand and only two attachments. I went with one that can be fixed when it breaks; it has no bells or whistles. For the rabbit area I use broom and dust pan and shop vac. One thing a vacuum cleaner technician told me when I bought mine is to go with a bagged vacuum cleaner if you have fine hay dust or pet hair as these plug filters in bagless ones. so even my shop vac has a bag.
Ah! Again… you all are so rockin awesome. You rock the catbox.
I think I’m going to go with the Dyson Animal with the attachments, because I use the attachments on my current vacuum every time I use it. Almost makes vacuuming fun! Almost………….
Sage Cat, let’s go vacuum shopping together! I would prefer to find a dealer in the area than order one online, in case I ever need repairs.
