› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Spring is in the air- and so was I momentarily between falling of horse and hitting the ground
Wow, Spring is in the air and the horse I lease is feeling frisky. He is an older horse- 24 year old horse grulla quarter horse that has been ridden throughout the winter in the indoor arena. Last fall I could barely get the ol boy into a trot without asking and asking- he is able and fit- but was a bit lazy- unless he is heading back to the barn after a longer ride.
Today, I saddled him up with my new saddle- a Cashel saddle- which is a treeless saddle made from foam and is supposed to be great for my back- I herniated a disc at the beginning of December. Right out of the driveway, Bo wanted to trot- and I slowed him down- as I did not want the jarring of my back. He walked along well for a bit- then ducked into the ditch- I turned him around in the field and went to point him in the right direction- and he was having none of it- he turned back towards home- trotting- so I am trying to slow him- so he goes into a canter throwing his head up and down. So of course, I lose my balance since it is not as secure a saddle like a typical western saddle. I knew I was coming off- so I bailed off and landed on my shoulder (did not want to hit my lower back/butt). And the little bugger took off without me. After the agonizing 5 seconds of not being able to breathe- was finally able to gasp in a breathe. But I sure got the wind knocked out of me- I forgot how scary that was- it has been at least 20 years since having the wind knocked out of me like that. Thankfully I had my helmet on and I am sure I will be sore tomorrow- but other than that I should be fine.
And thankfully I did not fall on my cell phone-so I was able to call right away and let them know I was OK and walking back- since he was back at the barn before I was. We took him into the arena (which he seems to think is so, so boring usually) and the owner of the barn rode him, and then I rode him to not end on a bad note.
This from the same horse that last Fall during lessons- to get him to trot in the arena I thought my thigh muscles were going to give out before I could consistently get him to get him to trot and keep trotting.
So I must really have horse fever if I am still not willing to stop riding after being ungracefully unmounted- but it will be with a regular saddle with a tree for the next rides that is for sure! And the weird thing is- I am 35 years old- old enough that I could have kids of my own- but I can’t tell MY mom that I got dumped off as she will freak out, and I could not tell her when I got my foot stepped on and broke some toes- cause that would have freaked her out too. Am I the only adult that cannot tell her Mom stuff like this??? My Mom would give me a big long lecture and I would never even be able to mention horses to her again. She did not even like that I was taking lessons and this was before the herniated disc. Maybe Mom’s always think your are a kid no matter how old you are???
And ironically Bo is the slowest, mellowest horse in the barn- just not today.
Julie
Yikes, that sounds scary Julie. I’m glad you are okay, you are going to be sore. And you are right not to tell you Mom, they NEVER stop worrying. Take some pain meds today so that you won’t be so sore tomorrow.
When I broke in Johnny horse he was 2 1/2 he reared and fell over onto my leg. I felt it so I pushed off to the side so he would land on my leg as opposed to on his back and me. Didn’t hurt.
That saddle you got sounds good. I have had 2 back fusions so I can understand about your back. I think you did good by not falling on it.
You know I can’t tell my Mom stuff either. I told her I had a pressure cooker. She got all scared and said they are not safe.
Then I mentioned we might go to egypt. OH dear. She thinks egypt is a 3rd world country or something. I might get kidnapped what if I get sick wht if I break a law oh dear. I told her they have hospitals just like here. rofl.
OH and made the msitake of telling her I had to splice the speaker wires together. Won’t make that mistake again. I hate that people scared of their own shadows.
Thought i would never hear the end of it. sheesh. But you gotta picture it she is 70 and still lives in Louisiana. ONe of those old stuck in a rut not open minded at all and carries a gun. Not worldly minded
Hmmm now I am thinking I definitely don’t want to go live with her. She might mistake me for a thief one night and shoot me. lol
Yikes! I am glad you are okay. We had a 36 year old palamino who still had lots of kick in him too! And leave it to the mini horse to take off with my mom in the cart, dump her and she had a broken shoulder
We have a 9 year old half quarter half paint horse now. He can be quite the spunky one too when the weather is right.
What do you think set him off like that? Was he cooped up for awhile and just letting out some energy? Did you lunge him before you went for your ride? Horses are strange creatures, we think we know them well and can read their body language but man when they wanna do what they want, they will do it! Thank goodness you had a helmet on! And its okay, I won’t tell your mom :p Glad you aren’t hurt!
Argh – You got a special saddle to preserve your back and he threw you?! My goodness! I’m happy to hear you didn’t injure your back though. Temporary winding and some bruises much preferred over back injury. Good for you on getting back on your horse.
Julie !!! I hope your well!!!
Can I give feedback?
he turned back towards home- trotting- so I am trying to slow him- so he goes into a canter throwing his head up and down.
Lots of horses are home-bound, as well he was likely grabbing the bit -so no matter how you pulled (cuing stop!) he was ready to go. Nothing you could have done really especially with your back.
But the best thing to know is to circle. Just grab one rein and tighen it, so the horse circles (They have to follow their face) and they cannot run in circles-just pull slightly and then tighter and tighter until you get control. This is something any rider needs to know
And the little bugger took off without me.
He’s being a bugger (spring is awesome) but also a rider falling off is scary and makes them run
and then I rode him to not end on a bad note.
That’s huge Katnip
Big big deal
TAkes GUTS!!! Awesome!!!

AS emailed, my mom is phobic of horses -I rode in a barn where they had stalls barred and she couldn’t walk the hallways (because the horses were goign to break out and eat her)-I never told her that my horse fell on me over a jump (which she didn’t know I was doing). Yes my mom knows if I do silly things, but if they involve horses-she has no idea
I’ve tried-she loves horses but is so scared of them lol
My dad rides too and she just can’t get over it
So yeah-not the only adult who lies to their mom about it
hjeheheh
Yikes! That is not fun. At least you knew you were coming off – then you can kind of let yourself fall off on your own terms (rather than being launched off! haha).
I’m just a few years from 30 and I cannot tell my mom about falls. While starting up lessons again last year I fell off at least 3 times in a few months and I definitely didn’t tell my mom! She would freak. I remember growing up she couldn’t even watch me ride and she’d cover her eyes over jumps (and these were like 2′ jumps, nothing big). I’d love to have a daughter someday who wants to ride, but I hope it doesn’t make me as nervous as it made my mom!
