A very long time ago on here, possibly a year ago just about… I posted that Flopsys eyes were very red and inflamed and then the next day she couldnt open one of them because the eye goobers had sealed it shut…

Flopsy is a short haired rabbit, but sheds all her fur every 6 weeks or so. What I mean by this is that she doesnt lose any hair for weeks at a time, and then about every 6 weeks, it all starts to come out, leaving fur everywhere…

I brush her every second day to get the extra fur out of her coat, but she still sheds every 6 weeks. And these eye problems seem to appear at the same time.

Anyways, the first 4 or 5 times she started to get the eye infection, we took her to the vet and he gave us different ointments to put in her  eye to clean up the problem…  but none of the ointments are really helping. I bathe her eye with wet cotton wool , and then Stu grooms her and her eye goes back to normal for another 6 weeks or so…

What I want to ask is: We have seen 2 different vets about this and they just keep giving us ointment which doesnt seem to work much better than the water on cotton wool. the medicine they give her stings and she really kicks and grunts when we have to put it on, but she is quite happy to have the water on cotton wool bathing her eye.  Now flopsy is shedding again, and this time both her eyes have closed over. We think she may be getting irritated eyes from her fur. We clean regularly, and brush her as often as she will let us!

Is there anything we can do for her to stop her from going blind every time her fur starts to fall out? Should we try another vet?

I’m wondering if she has blocked duct problems or even teeth issues? . Do you notice that her eyes water a bit too when she’s eating. I just wonder if the more she grooms, her mouth is moving, saliva starts and all of  it could belated to some underlying other problems. Do you trust your vets – I mean do you feel they are rabbit savvy?   I am wondering if her teeth should be looked at.

            Hi Binky Bunny,
I havent noticed her eyes watering when she is eating… I guess she could have duct problems. When I clean her eyes there is a lot of white goober. This dries hard on her eye. I really like my vet, but have heard that there are much better ones out there. he isnt a specialist or anything tho. He has looked at her teeth a few times and says that they are healthy and dont need filing. I am quite happy to go and see another vet.
Could it be to do with her food? the way her mouth is moving? Causing problems? I can go see Jerseys vet, thats not too far away

I think if the ointment isn’t helping, just a regular saline wipe with a cotton ball during her shed would help. She has a funny shed pattern then. 6 weeks like clockwork? I remember you posted about her eye before and the vet said conjunctivitis. If it was, I’m wondering if it is contagious like the human version. Could the others also get it. I’m not suggesting you separate her though! If Stu cleans her eye for her, this is great. I know K&K used to have to clean Chucks goobey eye daily. Then when she brought Noot home, he took over that task for her.

Thanks jersey for refreshing the past on this.

Rucy had a chronic problem with her right eye watering (though she had teeth problems, that actually was not related to that), She had a blocked tear duct due to scar tissue. But Jack would clean it for her most of the time. If not, it would get crusty and just a little goopy, but for the most part it was just clear tears that drained down the side of her cheek (UNTIL it dried, where it turned into tiny crusty white dust pieces that I would get rid of with a luke warm damp cloth) But if your bunny has alot of white goober, more than the normal little dot of sleepy, it makes me think more of infection and/or irritation.

Do you notice her scratching more during this time and how are her nails? The reason I am asking is just thinking of other things that could possibly be causing this ONLY during a shed. If she’s itching more now and her nails are really long, she could accidentally be scratching her eye.

It really is hard to know for sure, but if it doesn’t clear up soon, I’d check again with a vet.

Stu cleans as much as she can, but this time it seems worse. One eye is really really red and closed over and the other has gophers and is closed but not as red. I am bathing it in saline like u mentioned now, it helps her to open her eyes but one looks sore. Her teeth really look great but maybe there is something I can’t see? She is eating ok but feels lighter. She is still poking normal. She doesn’t seem to ever scratch herself at all and her nails are really short and blunt and she is cleaning her face with her front paws. She seems happy enough. Still comes looking for me when I am out of the room. The others have never had runny eyes at all. They all have different fur. They are not shedding but flopsys hairs are so fine and they are everywhere. They irritate my eyes too. This is what made me think it was the shedding. I can seperate her from the others with just stu to groom her but I am worried she will fret if she moves and can’t see her surroundings properly

Lol iPhone made dome spelling errors there. Gophers was meant to be goobers and poking was meant to be looking

We have a rabbit at the rescue who has chronic eye problems like that. She really likes it when we flush it with saline. We put some kind of ointment in her eye but she doesn’t protest. If it stings I wonder if her eye is getting scratched by fur that might be getting in there.

Chuck has a goobery eye-it’s from damage early on from pasturella-so even though there is no infection currently he needs his eye cleaned frequently. I can do it less now that he has Noot to clean it but it does need wiping and removal of boogers every 2-3 days or so.

Is there any chance your bun has pasturella? If it’s damaged ducts the vet should be able to tell when he does a ‘duct flush’ or by xray-the duct flush is by far cheaper

How is her eye now? If not any better, I would recommend the vet if you haven’t already been there.

Sorry to hear about your problems with Flopsy. Stormy has eye problems similar to what you describe, although not as bad. He gets fur in his eyes and then gets long, stringy goobers in his eyes that, when bad enough, they make his eyes red and watery. I brought him to the vet a few months ago when it was really bad, she didn’t have an explanation but she said it wasn’t infection or his teeth and she gave me some drops which help after a few days. I need to use them every so often. I’ll try to find out what they are called for you.

Hi! Sorry I havent been on for a few days. Flopsys eyes are great again now. I was really worried a few days ago because they were both still closed and when I cleaned them one of them had some blood in it. I went to the vet and he gave us some more goo to go in her eye which we used for a few days. This morning her eyes are back to normal again. She has also stopped shedding which is good. So all is well on the flopsy front. Thank you for your help Would love to know more about the drops The vet says its like conjunctivitis. It just comes on like clockwork every few weeks!
